This is a last-of-its kind, special order Rolls-Royce Silver Spur II, specially commissioned by the government of the Soviet Union for use in New York City by its Ambassador to the United Nations.  Rolls-Royce had a long and confidential history of supplying limousines to the Soviet government.  Rolls-Royce was Vladimir Lenin's most prized automobile, and he owned four of them, which allowed successive Soviet Premiers to continue to own them and supply them quietly to members of the Politburo and to Ambassadors at key embassies.  This Silver Spur II was delivered in 1991, just prior to the collapse of the Soviet Union, and it has had only one other owner since.  The car has a standard 6.8L, V8 fuel injected engine for this model.  The engine has been serviced at least twice yearly and functions smoothly and quietly.  This limousine travels comfortably at 80 mph without any vibrations (I haven't tested it beyond that point, but it can probably handle higher speeds easily).  The brakes have been replaced, as has the power steering and rear suspension components. The radio/DVD has been replaced and connects flawlessly to the 10 speakers in the limousine.  The car offers a classic Rolls-Royce ride: the suspension provides a gentle rocking motion that is like traveling on a boat in calm waters.  The exterior is finished in an oyster color and is in near-new condition, having retained its original luster through careful, annual detailing.  The interior features slate gray carpeting, with evergreen lambs wool carpet overlays in front and back seats.  The doors and faschia are finished in the finest burled wood inlay, which is in excellent condition and shows no sign of sun damage.  This car was produced when Rolls-Royce was still using its fabled Connolly cowhide and deerskin leather at its Crewe manufactory.  The leather retains its suppleness and gives off a subtle odor of finely-bound books, so that the car never needs an odorizer (no one ever smoked in this car).  There are the usual Rolls-Royce luxury touches, such as reclining rear seats, passenger overhead lighting in the rear cabin, a heating and cooling system with incredibly sensitive controls, reclining picnic tables facing the passengers in the rear, enormous leg room for the passengers (the car is 18-1/2 feet long and comes with carpeted foot supports), and the option to use either a modern car horn or a traditional, 1920's horn.  The car has a steel roof rather than the usual Everflex roof, which is the source of water damage and rusting in many of these models today.  The doors are heavily armor-plated for the protection of the ambassador (the car was one of the first to have phones installed, one in the rear for the ambassador, and one next to the chauffeur/bodyguard).  Despite weighing in at over 6,000 lbs., the car recently achieved 14.5 mpg on highway driving from Chicago to St. Louis.  There are 59,436 original miles on this car, which means it's been driven in the sweet spot of 2,000 - 3,000 miles per year, enough to keep the engine functioning properly and prevent deterioration of break lines and rubberized parts.   The car is equipped with special Rolls-Royce floor plates for each door.  A hand-sewn protective cover made for this model is included.  All original documents are provided.  The buyer covers all shipping costs, and must provide a $2,000 deposit through PayPal prior to shipping.  Payment via bank wire transfer, or certified check requiring clearance before car is shipped.  Purchase price of $24,500.

Rolls-Royce mulling V16 roadster, SUV

Fri, 22 Feb 2013

Rolls-Royce may be working on a new, mega-powerful roadster for 2017. CAR reports the convertible would conceivably boast a V16 engine. Of course, the report gets a little muddled here, with CAR saying the engine would be very similar to that of the one that powers the Bugatti Veyron - the French machine makes use of a W16 mill. Even so, the article says the Rolls-Royce version could put down around 700 horsepower. Design wise, we're told the creation will feature a suitably long nose with the passenger compartment pushed far to the rear.
Of course, 2017 is a long way off, and the thought of a 16-cylinder, naturally aspirated engine bowing under the crush of ever more stringent government fuel efficiency and emission regulations seems unlikely. We'll just put this one in the wait-and-see file for the time being. In the interim, you can hop over to CAR for a closer look at the magazine's rendering of the would-be roadster. If a V16 convertible does happen, look for a smug look on Rowan Atkinson's face.
Oh, and about that SUV? There's not much to report, though CAR does note that officials are keeping a close eye on rival Bentley and its plans for a luxury utility vehicle. Rolls brand boss Harald Krüger has even gone so far as to admit "we're regularly debating whether to take action."

Is your brain predisposed to make you love Rolls-Royce?

Wed, 19 Jun 2013

XCAR has taken a look at what could very well be one of the most quintessential British cars ever built: the 1973 Rolls-Royce Corniche. The question at hand is whether or not expensive luxury items like artisan foods, designer clothing and yes, high-end automobiles are worth their monetary cost. Do they bring some undefined additional value to the table over their low-buck counterparts, or are they simply an excellent way to part a fool from his dollar bills? While the video below can't comment on four-course meals or $400 jeans, our valiant host does have a word or two on the joy a Rolls-Royce can bring to your life.
That's even true of a model like the '73 Corniche. Built during one of the darker days of the company's history, the convertible was designed and manufactured by an automaker on the verge of collapse. Still, it manages to hold on to that essential spirit of luxury so crucial to the Rolls-Royce brand. Check out the video below to see what we mean.

eBay Find of the Day: Andy Warhol's 1974 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow

Sun, 25 May 2014

Andy Warhol is one of the most recognizable artists of the 20th Century. With hits like his famous Campbell's soup cans and Marilyn Monroe portraits, he is likely the first name you think of in association with the pop art movement. He isn't known for being an auto enthusiast, though, but maybe that's not entirely the case - there was his BMW M1 art car, after all. Now, Warhol's 1974 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow is up for auction on eBay Motors.
According the seller, Warhol never had a driver's license, but he still wanted to own a luxurious car. It's claimed that he occasionally had his famous friends, including Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, chauffeur him around in the Rolls. Following Warhol's death in 1987, the car was auctioned for $77,000, and since then it has only been sold to one additional owner.
The Rolls is painted Walnut and Mason's Black, which appears closer to a shade of brown in these photos, with a black leather interior. The engine is the company's' popular 6.75-liter V8 with a three-speed automatic transmission, and there are just 56,000 miles on this luxurious classic. The seller is including copies of original purchase order from Rolls-Royce and the title to Warhol Enterprises to prove the famous artist's ownership of the car, plus all of its service records.
