up for sale is a well maintained $50,000 sports car with just under 200K miles on it.

drivetrain:  when I bought this the oil cooler was leaking into the oil, so the previous owner had it parked for a few years in dry storage.  I had this fixed, compression checked and motor gone through with all fluids changed at 196k and everything checked out.  Compression numbers were not written down, but was well above levels requiring rebuild.  It has been running mobile 1 full synthetic 0-40 for at least the last 40k miles.  The timing belt was changed at 160k, was what I was told; there is no paperwork to substantiate this.  according to the dash instruments, oil pressure is typically at 4 of 5 when under any sort of load.  drops to 2-3 at idle.  Big brake kit, with stiff suspension system.  I think one of the previous owners had track prepped it...

bottom line:  it pulls hard, doesn't smoke at all.  I had it over 100 mph one time and was surprised just how much the car calmed down.

Interior:  there are cracks in the dash, the center console is a little rickety but intact.  The sunroof motor runs well, the gears were changed a month ago, but unfortunately there is a slight bend in the drive cable which causes it to hang up: taking the sunroof off requires removing the screws holding the gears in place (boo!).  the headliner has been torn around the sunroof latches and to access the hatch.  The hatch has been rebuilt. the passenger recarro seat could use some refastening/clips as it is "coat-tailing" on the back of the seat!  kenwood stereo, CD with auxiliary input.  Stock speakers still work fine, one cuts out occasionally.  rear wiper turns itself on when you round corners, otherwise doesn't respond so I have it unplugged.

Exterior:  midnight blue paint, some oxidation on the roof.  there was a bit on the hood as well, so carbon fiber vinyl was placed to help hold it over until paint time comes.  One of the previous owners put tacky red stripes on the passenger fender, which were oxidized and showing through to the blue paint, so I had these vinyled with the orange as shown.  personally, I think it should be consistent color, but was concerned that if I had these removed that it would cause a worse problem.  that said, I'm sure there's people out there that would like it this way.  factory wing is paint matched.  body is straight, no bumps or paint nicks noted to bumpers.  some body work has been done, but done well (I can't tell what they did and I have a discerning eye).  front driving lights cracked but still functional.  headlights work well.

wheels/tires:  SSR racing 18" 3 piece wheels with sumitomo HTRZ III, front 235/40ZR18, rear 275/35ZR18.  Rear tires have about 300 miles on them, front indeterminant, but plenty of tread left.  cost: 400/wheel, 160 per tire.  3 of the stock rims are also available for an extra $200 (one was stolen out of the garage!), tires are almost new.

local pickup only.  I reserve the right to end the auction early due to other listings.

Roger Rodas' widow suing Porsche over Carrera GT crash

Tue, 13 May 2014

Investigations undertaken by local law enforcement may have vindicated Porsche from any wrongdoing in the crash that killed actor Paul Walker and racing driver Roger Rodas last year, but the latter's widow is apparently not convinced. According to emerging reports, Kristine Rodas has filed a lawsuit seeking unspecified damages from Porsche Cars North America.
In her suit filed with the Los Angeles Superior Court, Rodas' attorney Mark Geragos reportedly disputes the findings of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, which asserted that the vehicle was traveling at an unsafe speed of 90 miles per hour on city streets, identifying the speed as the cause of the accident. Instead the lawsuit claims that the vehicle was only going 55 mph and that the cause of the crash was improper equipment - namely a faulty right rear suspension and the lack of a crash cage and proper fuel tank.

Porsche offers detuned Boxster and Cayman 211 in Europe

Mon, 15 Sep 2014

Looking at a new Porsche Boxster? First of all, we commend you on your choice, because in its latest iteration, the Boxster has sped out from under the shadow of the 911 and into its own. But now to choose: do you get the base model with 265 horsepower, the Boxster S with 315 hp, or the top-of-the-line Boxster GTS with 330 hp? It's a daunting question, considering the $10k+ price gap between each model that you could put into the gas-and-rubber jar. Same goes for the Cayman, albeit with ten more horses across the board. But as if that's not confusing enough, there appears to be another player on the field. (That is, at least, in certain European markets.)
Appearing on the company's Belgian and Norwegian sites are the Boxster 211 and Cayman 211. As you might have guessed, they pack a less substantial 211 horsepower, undercutting what we know as the base models. Instead of using a smaller engine, though, the Boxster and Cayman 211 get the same 2.7-liter boxer six, just with less power.
As a result, they're a bit slower off the line: the Boxster 211 takes between 6.1 and 6.4 seconds to get to 62, depending on exact specifications, compared to the 5.5- to 5.8-second range for the 265-hp Boxster, while the Cayman 211 is quoted at 6.2 seconds versus the 275-hp Cayman's 5.4 to 5.7 seconds. Fuel consumption and emissions, on the other hand (and as you'd expect), are better in the 211. But while Porsche Norway charges around $10k less for the 211 models, Porsche Belgium charges the same for the 211 models as it does for the next most powerful versions (from which they appear to be visually indistinguishable).

MotorWeek proves '90s were awesome with Supra, Stealth, RX-7, Corvette, 968, 300ZX comparo

Thu, 24 Jul 2014

Oh, the heady days of 1993, back when the Clinton Presidency was just getting underway, and it seemed like every hot new rock band was coming out of Seattle. Sports cars in the US had finally shaken off the shackles that slowed them during the '70s and '80s, and you could buy any number of legitimately quick vehicles again. MotorWeek recently went digging into its archives to find this six-model test from 1993 showing off some of the best semi-affordable performance coupes that money could buy at the time, and it's priceless.
Featuring the 1994 model year Toyota Supra in twin-turbo guise and MY 1993 versions of the Porsche 968, Nissan 300ZX TT, Mazda RX-7, Dodge Stealth R/T Turbo and Chevrolet Corvette LT-1, MotorWeek definitely covered all of the bases. One thing that might surprise younger readers is these cars' performance. The video only provides 0-60 acceleration times, but several of these vehicles would still be considered pretty potent today - over 20 years since going on sale. The Supra is especially impressive, hitting 60 miles per hour in just 5 seconds. Even today, that's nothing to sneeze at.
Given their performance potential and still-attractive looks, it's amazing that some of these coupes are old enough to drink now. The progress of interior design and safety equipment in the intervening years is pretty shocking, though. In most of these models, having two airbags is touted as a big deal. Scroll down to watch a Throwback Thursday blast from the past about some of the '90s best sports cars.
