Porsche 944 Turbo (951) clean and nicely modded for street & track / HPDE

1987 Porsche 944 Turbo (also known as the 951). This is a very nice, driver-quality '44, not perfect but nicer than most! It has had a recent good quality repaint in the original Zermatt silver. The interior is in very good to excellent shape for its age. Leather is very nice, just some slight patina on the side bolsters as would be expected. Most everything works as new, the heat is hot, the A/C blows cold.

The previous owner had recently done the timing belt, balance shafts, water pump, and tune up. Car has been modified tastefully with good quality components from Lindsey Racing, one of the foremost 951 tuners in the country. I'm told it has an upgraded turbo from a later 944 Turbo S model, along with adjustable boost, boost enhancer, shimmed wastegate, big blow off valve, tuned chip, and a big exhaust, straight thru to the Magnaflow muffler. I can say with certainty it hits HARD when it comes on the boost, definitely not for a beginner! It's one of the strongest 951's I've had the pleasure of driving. The clutch hooks hard as well, and this car is equipped with the fairly rare and very desirable Limited Slip differential.

Suspension is a very well sorted collection of components: Weltmeister blade-adjustable swaybars, some of the best available for Porsches. KONI double-adjustable front struts, threaded for ride height adjustability as well, with Eibach ERS coil over springs in a very well chosen spring rate for track and HPDE events without being too harsh for street use. KONI 2812 aluminum threaded body rear shocks with Eibach ERS coilover springs designed to be used in conjunction with the factory Porsche torsion bars, which have been re-indexed at a lower ride height. Alternatively, if the buyer wants a more street-oriented ride, I'm happy to swap in a set of KONI yellows (adjustable) and H&R springs, which ride a bit smoother. The car currently sits on a set of 18x10 Turbo Twist replica wheels shod with half-tread Kumho XS tires, size 245/35 front and 265/35 rear. Fenders were rolled to accommodate this much larger size, and grip is fantastic with them. The car has a fairly aggressive alignment as well, which has the side benefit of allowing a bit more clearance. It is also equipped with some good dual purpose, high performance Porterfield brake pads.

As for apologies, there are a scant few, less than you would expect for a car of this vintage. But in the interest of full disclosure:
Seats show some mild wear and patina
Driver side rear view door mirror has been replaced with incorrect glass
Hood has a slight twist to it from years of having a worn out hood shock on the passenger side (which I replaced)
Dash has a few small cracks at base of windshield (not extremely noticeable, and easily fixed with a dash cover)
Steering wheel patina- it's a nice Momo Monte Carlo wheel, and feels great to the touch, but visually shows some wear
Airbag light on because of aftermarket Momo steering wheel
Turn signal doesn't self-cancel
Driver side door lock works with the key but not the electric lock button
Horn doesn't want to honk

Overall, this has been a very fast, very fun car. It is suitable for autocross, track events/HPDE, and daily driving too. It has been very reliable for me, and I hate to sell it, but I've got too many toys and need money to expand my business, so it's time to find a good home for it.

Please: Serious buyers only. No joyriders, be prepared to provide a good home for this. They don't build em like this any more, and I don't want to see it abused. Take care of it and it will take good care of you!

Asking $8500 OBO. Trades considered.

China bans military license plates on luxury autos

Wed, 01 May 2013

Driving a vehicle with a military license plate in China provides many privileges. Legally reserved for official vehicles only, the designation apparently allows drivers to enjoy special liberties on the roads, including breaking traffic laws, filling up with free fuel and receiving light-and-siren escorts through congested cities. So attractive are the benefits that there is a secondary market for used legal and counterfeit plates - especially among those wealthy enough to afford luxury cars. But all of that is reportedly coming to an end, as President Xi Jinping, chairman of the Central Military Commission, is on a mission to fight corruption in his country.
A new license plate system goes into effect today, and it is designed to "maintain social harmony, stability and the reputation of the military," says the PLA Daily, the armed forces' official newspaper. While the abuse has been going on for many years, the internet has put the spotlight on the bad behavior, and the negative press does not represent the morals and true colors of the armed forces, say officials.
While military-plated Porsche drivers have been singled out as offenders, Bloomberg notes that all vehicles with engine displacements above 3.0 liters and with a sticker price in excess of about $73,000, will be banned from receiving military plates. This includes vehicles from Audi, Cadillac, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lincoln and the Volkswagen Phaeton. Even if drivers are savvy enough to circumvent the new issuing system, the military has put technology at toll gates to catch users of counterfeit plates. There has been no word on the punishment if caught.

There's a Porsche Cayman under here somewhere

Wed, 15 Jan 2014

What we have here is the work of Dubai tuner Royal Customs that is controversial even beyond its styling. The Middle East aftermarket house says it spent fourteen months developing a bodykit for the Porsche Cayman, and the results seem to be aimed at those who wish their coupe were a 918 Spyder - the nose, strake-filled and widened rear fender, carbon fiber wing and massive diffuser all cribbing some from Stuttgart's new hybrid supercar.
Even without a buyer, the Alpha One Concept is already controversial. When WorldCarFans posted on the Royal Customs car recently, German tuner Alpha-N Performance wrote in alleging that the Dubai package copies their design from two years ago, which was also called the Alpha One, a design with which it's clear the Dubai Alpha One shares numerous cues. We asked Royal Customs about its relationship to the Alpha One car, we were told, "Yes, there is a lot we can say about the remarkable similarities all of which will be explained by our press release by Mr. Emil from Autogespot. Please wait for the official release and you will have the full exciting story. It's an 'actual success story' and not a 'replication' story."
The response is referring to an "extensive report" on the car coming out of Autogespot. Royal Customs doesn't have the Alpha One Concept on its site yet, so we're still missing quite a few details on it, such as whether the Porsche engine has been given a similarly 918-ish workover. We do know that the company says each car takes 30 days to build and it will only build three of them, which is a number that should satisfy any haters and, even more so, its buyers. You can decide which side of the fence you're on by having a close look at it in the gallery above.

Porsche considering X6-style Cayenne coupe

Mon, 05 May 2014

It was practically unthinkable when Porsche introduced the Cayenne in 2002. An SUV... from Porsche? Purists balked, but customers flocked, and the Cayenne propelled the its holding company into such profitability that it practically took over the entire Volkswagen Group. It's now been twelve years since the original Cayenne arrived as the first production Porsche with more than two doors, and Zuffenhausen has since followed up with the Panamera, the Macan and the second-generation Cayenne. But it isn't about to stop there.
The latest intel coming in from overseas suggests that Porsche is in the advanced stages of designing a slant-back, five-door Cayenne coupe to take on the likes of the BMW X6 and upcoming Mercedes-Benz MLC. Though the business case (however solid BMW may have already demonstrated it to be) is still being considered, if approved it would join the upcoming third-generation Cayenne on the production line in Leipzig as early as 2018 - a year after the new Cayenne itself is expected to arrive.
The Cayenne coupe would share much with the more conventional MkIII Cayenne (and for that matter the next Audi Q7 and VW Touareg as well as the Lamborghini Urus and Bentley Falcon) but differentiate itself with a more stylish (if less practical) roofline and an altogether sportier attitude. Autocar reports that the design calls for tauter sheetmetal and sportier cabin inspired by the 918 Spyder. Pricing would be positioned a good 15-20 percent higher than the regular Cayenne, and the "coupe" version would likely be offered with most, if not all of the engines available in the conventional version - including gasoline, diesel, turbo and possibly even hybrid options ranging all the way up to the 550-horsepower Turbo S.
