1986 Porsche 944 Guards Red on 2040-cars

Year:1986 Mileage:120000
Location:

Portland, Oregon, United States

Portland, Oregon, United States

Porsche 944 in guards red with beige cloth interior, front seats have sheep skin covers. 120,000 original miles on the motor. This car came from my neighbors garage when they were moving a few weeks ago. It looks to have been sitting for some time, I found receipts on the passenger seat from 1999! It has no plates, though it does come with the title, which is Oregon and branded as rebuilt. I have looked the car over and it shows no signs of damage other than the passenger door looking to have been repainted and a small ding in the front quarter panel near the passenger headlight. The car looks great and is showing no rust.

When I got the car I drained the coolant and oil and replaced with new fluids, replaced the battery and gave it fresh gas. the car started just fine with a bit of smoke out of the exhaust which went away after a minute or two. Not having plates I have not been able to do much road testing, though it has been around the block a few times and the car accelerates, stops, and turns as it should. Car is a 5 speed and it gets through all the gears just fine as well as reverse. I did a compression test and all cylinders looked good reading at: 1:230Lbs. 2:220Lbs. 3:200Lbs. 4:230Lbs.

The interior is fairly clean though the rear seats have a few rips in them and the fronts are covered by sheep skin. The ignition seems to have a key broken off in it so the car starts below the dash with a screwdriver, A new ignition cylinder and key is included. All of the lights work fine and the pop up headlights move up and down just fine. Neither of the windows work and i have had no time to troubleshoot this yet, though the car came with a window switch in the center console. The sunroof works just fine and is easily removed. Also included is a full motor gasket set and a new water pump as well as a timing belt. Looks as though the previous owner was going to put some work into the car. The tires have good tread and are holding air. The wheels are original Porsche "phone dials" and are in great shape.

This car is new to me and I have no experience working on Porsche's and I am not that eager to learn. I really want to pass this car on to someone who is excited to have a 944. I am a BMW guy myself, I own and drive an E30 M3 daily, and feel conflicted having this other German sports car in my driveway. The car is good and would be a great project for someone, just not me right now.

Like I have stated, this car has not been fully tested. It starts, runs, drives, and stops. that's about all I can tell you though, I have not had it checked by any professional mechanics or shops. All that said, car is sold AS IS where it is! buyer will coordinate and pay for any shipping I will help out with that however I can though. Thanks for looking and good luck. Feel free to contact me with any questions or to request photos.

Porsche announces plan to replace 911 GT3 engines

Wed, 19 Mar 2014

About a month back, we reported that Porsche was suspending delivery of its 911 GT3 due to reported incidents of the engine bursting into flames. A few days later, Porsche told owners of the new track-ready models not to drive their cars and had their local dealers pick up the cars in question. Just a couple of days ago, we reported that Porsche was working on a fix, and now we have the official details.
Following an internal investigation prompted by two such incidents, Porsche has confirmed that is has identified the problem as resulting "from a loosened screw joint on the connecting rod." The loose connecting rod, Porsche found, damaged the crankcase, which in turn resulted in oil leaking and then - in at least two cases - igniting.
Our source is unaware of Porsche being contacted by GT3 owners concerned about the impact of a replacement engine on their car's collectibility or resale value.

Car companies may need to start curbing model proliferation

Mon, 17 Nov 2014

Looking at the current automotive landscape, especially from German makers, you quickly get the impression that less definitely isn't more. BMW alone offers its 3 Series platform in practically every segment possible, including the regular sedan and 4 Series Gran Coupe, which would seem to be direct competitors. Porsche might be the winner, though, with 20 different variants of the 911 listed for sale on its US website. However, some of this model madness might be reaching an end as companies begin cutting back spending or shifting money to other priorities.
According to Yahoo Finance, the offerings from the German automakers are up 25 percent over the past three years to over 200 models in Europe. The peak is expected to come around 2018 at 230 separate vehicles, according to consulting company PwC.
Amazingly, BMW, which is among the poster children for this model explosion, might be changing its tune. "I'm sure there will be points in the future where we look at certain cars and say, 'Maybe we need to think differently now,'" said head of sales Ian Robertson in an interview, according to Yahoo Finance. The statement certainly sounds shocking coming from a company rumored to have 23 front-wheel-drive vehicles all using a single platform on the way.

Magnus Walker turbocharges his love for the Porsche 911

Thu, 31 Oct 2013

He's had his fill of early, long-hood Porsche 911s - he owns at least one from each model year, from 1964 to 1973 - so Magnus Walker, a fanatic of the Stuttgart, Germany-based automaker, recently set his sights on the early Porsche 930, as documented by this XCAR video called 'Turbo Fever.' Let us translate: pretty soon Walker will own all of the earliest, non-intercooled 911 Turbos - at least one from each model year, starting at 1975 and ending at 1977 (though the 1975 911 Turbo Carrera never officially was imported to the US by Porsche, so it'll be tougher to find one Stateside).
Any Porsche enthusiast can tell you why they love their car, and it often comes down to the small details that differentiate one model year from another. One of many examples is the mid-'80s 928. They look similar, but the basic difference between a 1984 Porsche 928 S and a 1985 928 S (US-spec) is two camshafts and 54 horsepower, though each car's V8 has its own pros and cons. We'll let Magnus Walker tell you all about the 930 and what makes the first three years special, as he's becoming quite the expert on early, air-cooled 911s. When the nearly 15-minute mini-documentary was filmed, which you can view below, he already had added four early 930s to his collection!
