1968 PORSCHE 912 SOFT WINDOW TARGA

In Good Running Order Needs Cosmetic Restoration

The time has come to at long last part with my very rare 1968 912 "Soft Window" Targa that I have owned since 1980.  According to the 912 Registry only 180 "Soft Window" Targas are known to exist.  Beginning in January, 1968, Porsche constructed Version I (i.e., Soft Window) Targas with a package shelf containing two small lockable compartments in place of the rear seats.  From late 1966 until 1969, Porsche produced a total of 2562 912 Targas, less than 8 percent of all 912s.

This 912 drives well and the rebuilt 4 cylinder 1582 cc 102 hp S-90 engine runs strong with all systems in working order.  The  steering is tight and it handles like a Porsche should, smooth clutch, brakes in good working order (new pads and brake lines), new shocks and struts and new tires for a comforatable ride.  Shifting through the standard 4-speed manual transmission is effortless.  It, also, has a new battery. Overall a very good car mechanically.

A California car, it has virtually no rust. The only visable rust is at the base of both front fenders just in front of the doors and the pan has a rust spot behind the driver's seat. The pan is original and has never been patched. The front trunk lid, the battery area the spare tire well, and  the heater box area solid. Overall this is an excellent opportunity to purchase a SWB 912 in rare and interesting colors that offers turn-key weekend fun as a driver quality.

The body has never suufered severe damage, and it is very straight.  The only damage to the body are minor dings and scrstches; the body is Bondo and filler free. The doors open and close properly without binding, and the door gaps are uniform.  The paint is not orignal to the car, and it has faded and there is some oxidation.  The interior is in poor condition and the rear jump seats are missing.  A car that is as substantially all there and mecchanically sound as this 1968 912 "Soft Window" Targa in need of a cosmetic restorastion only is a rare find.

I have all maintenance and repair records for the period of my ownership.  The vehicle's California registration and tags are current.  The reported milageis what the odometer shows, I do not know if it is accurate or not. I will assist in arranging to ship the vehicle worldwide.  Please email me with any questions you might hvae or to make an appointment for a vehicle inspection.  Good luck and good bidding!

Hyundai, Porsche top J.D. Power APEAL study

Wed, 23 Jul 2014

Just as they did in the Initial Quality Study, Porsche and Hyundai have taken the premium and non-premium crown, respectively, for the 2014 J.D. Power APEAL study. This is the tenth consecutive year for that Porsche has been rated the best premium make in the APEAL study, which attempts to figure out how pleased owners are with their purchases. For 2014, it asked 86,000 owners of MY2014 cars to rate their vehicles in 77 different categories 90 days after their initial purchase. The resulting figures were plugged in deliver the APEAL score, which is rated on a 1,000-point scale.
The industry average sits at 794 points for 2014, although that's a one-percent decline over last year's rating. In this year's study, premium brands averaged 840 out of 1,000, while non-premium makes average 785. For their part, Porsche netted an impressive 882 points, while Hyundai earned an 804. Interestingly, only four non-premium brands (Hyundai, Ram, Volkswagen and Mini) finished above the industry average for 2014.
It's also interesting to see the clear delineation between premium and non-premium brands, with an eight-point gap between the non-premium champ, Hyundai, and the lowest-rated premium brand, Volvo.

Porsche 911 and Citro"en DS lovechild would look like this

Wed, 06 Nov 2013

The early Porsche 911 and the Citroën DS were two cars produced in the same era (though the DS launched in 1955, nearly 10 years before the 911), but they were vastly different from each other. The 911 was a uniquely German, pure-bred sports car, while the French-built DS had four doors and focused more on ride quality than sporting intentions. That made it all the more surprising when we came across the 911DS, a creation that binds the rear half of the Citroën to the front of an early, longhood 911.
The folks at Brandpowder are behind the creation, which we surmise was an exercise in design rather than an actual, completed project (some of the images look Photoshopped), but it's compelling nonetheless, with a turbocharged flat-six providing 260 horsepower. We hope someone builds it - though we're sure if that happened the early 911 crowd would cry afoul at one of its increasingly rare and valuable Porsches being grafted onto an old French car.
But as Brandpowder points out lightheartedly, perhaps the creation could transcend popular car culture: "The 911DS represents the effort of two countries, a genuine attempt to join their energy and talent into one thing. We hope Germany and France will be inspired by Brandpowder's story, as a metaphor for a better and greater Europe."

Porsche 918 Spyder debuts with new N"urburgring lap record [w/video]

Tue, 10 Sep 2013

It's been a long time in the making, but Porsche has finally revealed the final production version of its long-awaited 918 Spyder here at the Frankfurt Motor Show. And yet that's not even the big news surrounding the hybrid hypercar.
No, the big news is that, while Porsche was preparing taking the wraps off the car here in Frankfurt, elsewhere in Germany a team was setting a blistering lap time at the Nürburgring. And not just any blistering lap time, but a new world record.
Porsche claims that, on the morning of September 4, a team of three drivers (including former rally champ Walter Röhrl and Porsche test drivers Timo Kluck and Marc Lieb) broke the Nordschleife lap record, Lieb finally setting the best time at 6:57 at an average of 111 miles per hour.
