Overall: Zips around like its new. Classiest car on the road even after 17 years. In excellent condition given the year and mileage. All known issues are disclosed below.

History: It was purchased with 68,000 miles on it in 2010 and has been dutifully cared for since (see maintenance report below; records from when I purchased the car are available). Previous owners seemed to have taken good care of the car as well. They did one touch up paint job on the right side and rear fender due to scratches, but otherwise it has the original paint. Clean car-fax report. It has always been stored in a garage when not in use.

Maintenance Performed in Last Three Years (aside from oil changes):
1) Replaced headlights (8/24/2010)
2) Replaced lower valve cover gaskets (9/13/2010)
3) Replaced engine air duct (9/13/2010)
4) Replaced clutch disk, pressure plate, release bearing and motor mounts (9/13/2010)
5) Replaced alternator and A/C belts (12/17/2010)
6) Replaced A/C compressor w/ clutch (5/25/2011)
7) Replaced battery (9/9/2011)
8) Replaced spark plugs (09/05/2012)

Known Issues and Estimated Costs for Fixing Them:
1) Sun roof missing plastic guide. Opens with switch; needs manual help to keep spring-loaded part out of way when closing. Estimated fix - $150
2) Tear in right corner leather of sunroof (see photos)
3) Rear tire tread starting to wear. Estimated cost of tires - 2 x $272 = $544 (plus installation labor)
4) Failed last emissions test. Estimated fix - unknown. Unlikely to be a serious issue but I do not have details on what is wrong.
5) 6-Changer CD player installed in the trunk does not work.
6) Broken belt monitor. Estimated fix - $150
7) Rear main seal seeping- recommended replacement with clutch. Unknown cost.

General Disclosure:
I will be happy to have a mechanic of your choosing inspect the car at your expense. The car is currently garaged in Houston, TX. This car is in great condition overall. The issues described above are typical maintenance issues that arise with cars of this sort and should be fairly straight forward fixes.

Porsche planning jacked-up 911 Safari? [w/poll]

Thu, 26 Dec 2013

The Porsche 911 may, for some, be the quintessential sportscar. And that typically means keeping it on paved roads and racing circuits. But there's a proud history to taking the Elfen off-road that traces back to specially-prepared 911s (like the one pictured above) which Porsche fielded in rallies in the late '70s and early '80s. And now Porsche is reportedly preparing to tap back into that history with a new off-road 911 model, according to the Auto Bild Motor Revue.
Tipped to be called the 911 Safari, the special variant would be based on the Carrera 4 but upgrade with bigger tires fitted to a beefed-up suspension with higher ground clearance and underbody skid plates. The model is expected to be presented initially as a concept at the Beijing Motor Show next April. But if enough interest is expressed - particularly from buyers in developing markets where the roads might not be as smooth as those to which North American and European drivers have become accustomed - Stuttgart could put it into production in 2016, when the current 991 is expected to get a mid-cycle refresh.

Porsche gives GT3 owners extra year of warranty, new engines in production April 22

Sat, 12 Apr 2014

While the auto industry reels from massive recall after massive recall, Porsche has quietly been working on a fix for an issue that's forced owners of the new 911 GT3 to park their track-ready rockets for fear of an engine fire. Thanks to a leaked letter from Porsche to a GT3 owner (which has been certified as real), we now have an idea of just where the German brand is at with the fix.
On April 22, Porsche will begin production of a new batch of GT3 engines for the 785 affected models across the globe. As you'll recall, the original issue rested with a screw joint that could loosen the connecting rod. The new engines have an "optimized piston rod screw connection," that should keep the connecting rod in place. Once technical validations are completed, production will kick off and new powerplants will be shipped around the globe for owners of the troubled cars.
Porsche will hand out a certificate to owners of affected cars once repairs have been completed, as a means of documenting the work. To make up for the trouble, Porsche will be giving owners an extra year on their new-vehicle warranty, while the 911 GT3 concierge will be reaching out to compensate them for having to park their car for so long.

2014 Porsche Cayman S

Tue, 19 Feb 2013

A Blue-Blooded Valentine
I need you to understand what it's like to drive this car. I'm not talking about your ability to comprehend the words on this page or process the figures that surround the 2014 Porsche Cayman S, but rather what it feels like to take control of a car conceived, designed, engineered and manufactured to set your prefrontal cortex alight with all the glee a Zippo typically reserves for pine needles marinated in jet fuel. From the instant you put your tail in the driver's seat, the Cayman sets about impregnating your veins with a full and varied spectrum of ludicrous emotion. It's not like taking the family pickup to market, I can tell you that much.
For 2014, the next-generation Cayman features many of the same styling tweaks first displayed on the coupe's drop-top cousin, the Boxster, though a spate of mechanical changes, more power, less weight and better efficiency join the party to further differentiate this model from its predecessor. And while additions like rev-matched downshifts and electronic power steering help push the Cayman into a new era, one fact remains unchanged: This is one of the best driving cars on the market. Period. Bear with me and I'll try to explain exactly why that is.
