2002 Porsche 911 Targa (996 series) in Arctic Silver with black leather interior, 6-speed manual transmission. In
great condition, always garage-kept, driven only in good weather. 75,500 miles, detailed service and maintenance
records and Carfax available, never any accidents, damage, leaks or other issues. Ready to drive and makes a great
daily driver or weekend toy.
Unlike most other 996-era Porsche 911's on the market, this one had its IMS bearing professionally replaced in 2014
to pre-empt risk of catastrophic engine failure that has afflicted some older 996's (plenty of information online
about this risk and the benefits of IMS replacement -- highly recommended for peace of mind; already done =
thousands of dollars saved).
New clutch, flywheel and sparkplugs were also installed at the same time in 2014. New battery, wipers in 2015.
Oil changed within last 1500 miles, new tires within last 2500 miles.
Options include carbon fiber shift knob and handbrake lever, heated seats, radar detector, 6-CD changer, Bose sound
system, 18" alloy wheels, leather interior/seats.
Targa roof was redesigned in 2002 -- if unfamiliar, the entire top section functions as a large sunroof, and slides
back underneath the rear window to allow driving with the roof open. See photos. Rear window opens up as a
hatchback to allow easy access to storage behind/on top of rear seats.
Car has always been garaged and hand-washed and is in great condition considering the age. Retains its original
shine (original paint throughout), no rust or accidents/damage.
Issues (not major issues in my opinion, but just in the interests of full disclosure):
(1) There is some minor wear/curb rash on some of the wheels, and a couple of barely noticeable
scratches/marks/surface damage on front and rear bumpers and passenger side door/body panel. See close-up photos.
Note there is road grime visible in those close-ups, but that will wash off; sorry, there was rain earlier on the
day I took those close-ups and I couldn't see the grime until I enlarged the high-res photos on my computer. Happy
to send more photos, but you can see in the other shots from a different day what the body looks like without that
grime.
(2) The Pioneer sat-nav unit currently does not function (buttons no longer work). The navigation function itself
has not worked since I bought the car in 2013 but until recently I was able to use it as a master unit to control
the built-in stereo, CD changer and aux line-in audio. If the Pioneer unit is disconnected, those other audio
units will still work independently (can be controlled through the built-in stereo); or, a new sat-nav unit can be
installed instead.
It'd be a relatively minor job to unplug or replace the sat-nav and clean up/repair the wheels and/or body if
desired but I've left as is so the buyer can choose based on preference.
Car comes with original manuals, key fobs, service/maintenance records, spare tire and toolkit. Clean Carfax
available.
This car is in great shape and has been very reliable, no headaches, lots of fun to drive. Sad to let it go but
becoming incompatible with my lifestyle/living situation. With the work put into it, it should be ready for years
of hassle-free driving.

Porsche ready to pick itself up after Le Mans failure

Mon, 23 Jun 2014

It's safe to say that things for Porsche didn't go quite as well at Le Mans this year as it might have hoped. After a sixteen-year gap, the winningest manufacturer in endurance racing history returned to the Circuit de la Sarthe this year hoping maybe not for outright victory in its first time back, but definitely a strong finish on which it could build on for next year. All the while it undoubtedly hoped its 911s would hold their own in the GT classes.
Unfortunately for Porsche, neither happened. After racing around the clock, and despite actually leading the festivities for some time, the best its 919 Hybrid could manage was an eleventh-place finish, lagging lamentably behind not only the other LMP1s (like the race-winning Audi) but also a handful of LMP2s. Meanwhile the LMGTE Pro and LMGTE Am titles went to the factory-backed teams of its arch-rivals Ferrari and Aston Martin, respectively.
Not a stellar result, in other words, but Porsche is taking it all in stride - accepting that it has a ways to go while congratulating its vanquishing rivals in the video below. It's good sportsmanship if we've ever seen it. Next year's race starts now.

The Bearable Lightness Of Being
Start with a standard Porsche 911 Carrera and its 350-horsepower, 3.6-liter flat six-cylinder engine. Bore a crepe-thin slice of aluminum from each cylinder to get to 3.8 liters, add a wider track out back and two extra exhaust pipes and voila, you can append an S to the Carrera's name. Hang two sets of wet, multi-disc clutches along its spine and you can make that a 4, or a 4S. Bolt on two forced-induction compressors and piping, add two fender vents and comically wide rear tires and you've redeemed your ticket to a Turbo. Increase the boost pressure and swell the corral to 560 horses and you have the Turbo S, which is the Virginia Slims of the 911 line-up because it's come a long way, baby.
Or you can go in a different direction. At that second stop, grab the 3.8-liter and cart it over to the engineers at Porsche's development center in Weissach, Germany. If racing were meat, they would be among the alpha carnivores. The baseboards in their homes are probably painted with miniature billboards for motor oil and vintage cigarettes along the straights, red-and-white stripes around every corner.

Porsche finally gives up the goods on 2014 Macan

Wed, 20 Nov 2013

Preparing a beachhead in the marketplace for the 2014 Porsche Macan crossover has been a years-long project for the German company. We've been hearing and reporting on rumors of the vehicle from its ideation stage and have covered the Macan's birth thoroughly over the last 12 months, including teasers, rumors, spy shots, leaked videos and more. Now, just ahead of the LA Auto Show-debut of Porsche's first-ever compact crossover, the wait for details is at an end.
Porsche will offer the crossover in two flavors to start: Macan S and Macan Turbo. The S model will be fitted with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine that makes 340 horsepower and will push the vehicle from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 5.2 seconds, then on to a top speed of 156 miles per hour. The Macan Turbo has even more impressive figures on all fronts: an all-new, 400-horsepower, twin-turbo 3.6-liter V6 engine; 0-60 mph in 4.6 seconds; top speed of 164 mph. Both models make use of Porsche's seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission as standard.
As impressive as these potent powertrains are the brakes Porsche is fitting to its new crossover. Six-piston monobloc fixed-caliper brakes live up front, grabbing 13.78-inch discs on the S model and tremendous 14.17-inch discs on the Macan Turbo. We're expecting serious stopping performance, to say the least.
