This 1927 Oakland is a minimalist hot rod

Fri, 21 Feb 2014

There are hundreds of American automakers that sprung up during the dawn of the automotive era, only to fold into obscurity or get gobbled up by what would eventually become the Big Four (yes, we're counting AMC here). Oakland is one such company, which was the forbearer for General Motors' Pontiac division. Sold until 1931, you simply don't see Oakland-badged cars anymore. Unless, that is, you know Brian Bent.
Bent drives a 1927 Oakland that still rides on wooden wheels. Its original wooden wheels, from the sound of it. That makes this anachronist and his Oakland the perfect subject for a Petrolicious video. Like many of the cars highlighted by Petrolicious, this old Oakland has had some work done to it, featuring a Pontiac flathead engine that's been pushed forward and a clutch pack built by Bent.
Take a look below for a closer look at this rare and fascinating Oakland.

Looking back at Oprah's free-car giveaway 10 years later

Fri, 12 Sep 2014

Oprah kicked off her 19th season in dramatic fashion by giving all 276 members of the studio audience a free car.
Molly Vielweber's Pontiac G6 appears unremarkable at first glance. It wears forest green paint, rolls on five-spoke aluminum wheels, and it has a sizeable scrape in the driver's side door, the scar of a decade's worth of hard use. You wouldn't notice it parked at a big box store or cruising on the highway. Pontiac made hundreds of thousands of G6s in the 2000s, and a lot are still on the road. It's unremarkable in every way except for the front license plate, which reads, "Oprah 6."

How to turn a Pontiac Fiero into a trackday car

Fri, 17 Oct 2014

Imagine hitting the track in a mid-engine, rear-wheel drive sports coupe that's affordable and has pretty good parts availability. It might sound like a pipe dream, but it's actually quite possible, if you're willing to think a little outside the box. The Pontiac Fiero is out there just waiting for a little work to turn it into a competent racing machine.
Think about it for a second. Of course, we would all like to be snaking through the curves in something exotic, but what happens when you crash or something breaks? The bills are going to mount up quickly. However, if you ball up a Fiero at the track, as long as you're not hurt, then it's not a huge tragedy.
That's basically the story of Steven Snyder in a new video from Drive starring Matt Farah. Snyder wanted to go to the track cheaply and ended up with an awesome little Fiero with a huge wing and a claimed 220 horsepower at the wheels thanks to a V6 from a Chevrolet Lumina. Check out the video to see how this pint-size Pontiac performs.

DESCRIPTION
History:
The Limited Edition 1989 Turbo Trans Am was originally conceived by Bill Owen of Pontiac, the 20th Anniversary Turbo Trans Am project was outsourced to PAS Inc. The team at PAS did most of the Turbo Trans Am development work. The V6 turbo engines were built by PAS at their California plant. From there, they went to GM's plant in Van Nuys, to be installed into GTAs on the F-Body assembly line. The cars were then shipped back to PAS for final assembly, testing, and quality control. Interestingly, the GTA chassis were selected at random, thus there is no correlation between VIN number and production sequence number. The actual number of cars to be produced was only 1,555 making them extremely rare and instantly collectable!! The 20th Anniversary Turbo Trans Am was offered as a complete package. Each was white with Tan interior; the only options available were T-Tops and Leather interiors. Although other Tran Ams were available with a CD player, the Turbo TA was available only with a Delco ETR AM/FM cassette with graphic EQ and redundant steering wheel controls.

The 20th Anniversary Turbo Trans Am had the honor of being selected as the Official Pace Car of the 73rd Indianapolis 500, held on May 28, 1989. The three cars which did pace car duty were the first in the history of the Indianapolis 500 to do so with no performance modifications whatsoever!! That means that, the 1989 Trans Am Turbo was the only production car in history to be fast enough to run at Indy as purchased off the showroom floor!!! What makes the 20th Anniversary Turbo TA so special is that it is a complete mechanical package, and not just some tape stripes. Starting with the engine, Pontiac borrowed Buick's 3.8 liter V6 turbo from the fabled 1986-87 Grand National. The differences that exist between the TTA motor and the GN version are Different heads, necessary in order to squeeze the motor between the strut towers, that also have the added benefit of improved exhaust flow and combustion chamber design. Different pistons were required in order to maintain correct combustion chamber volume, a cross-drilled crank, larger 12 fin/inch GNX-style intercooler, specially-designed stainless-steel headers, higher-pressure Bosch 237 fuel pressure regulator, and a recalibrated engine control module. Rated at 250hp the engine actually produced 301hp on the GM dynos!

Car Number 191:
We are pleased to present this magnificent 1989 Pontiac Turbo Trans Am 20th Anniversary Pace Indy Car. Having traveled only 38,511 miles since new, this un-restored modern classic is a true investment quality collector car. It is car number 191 of 1,555 built. It is only 1 of 1324 built with both T-Top and Leather interior options! It retains the 301hp turbo charged V6 engine and automatic transmission. Power steering, power brakes, air conditioning, power locks, power windows, AM/FM/Cassette stereo, power seats, 1LE Racing Brake Package with 4 wheel disc brakes, Original T-Top storage bags, and all other factory features. Additions to the car include a 10 disc CD changer in the trunk, and a K&N air filter. Included with the car are photos of this car driving on the Indianapolis 500 track, Pontiac Press Kit, Original Sales Brochures, and a letter from Pontiac confirming that this car is #191 of the 1,555 built!

Rarely do we see such a clean and well maintained low mileage example like this one. The paint and interior of this car are amazing, the decals are crisp, the performance is unmatched, and the shear joy of driving it will have you smiling till it hurts! If you are looking for a fast and fun car to enjoy, and also want an investment grade car then look no further. The prices of classic F-Body muscle cars like this one are on a steady incline! It is our opinion that they will follow the lead of muscle cars before them and reward its new owner with a positive return in years to come. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions you have. International shipping is available.
