1979 Trans Am Original Color Nocturne Blue with Gold Graphics. This car has been restored at some point and time. The car has been repainted its original color with correct gold graphics. Patch panels were welded in the floor boards with rubberized undercoating applied. It was originally an Olds. 403 but someone installed a rebuilt Pontiac 400. I bought the car in July 2012 and it developed a rod knock. I am mechanically inclined so I removed the engine and found it to be very clean. I installed a remanufactured crankshaft with new 20/20 bearings. The pistons are forged stamped L2262F30 Sealed Power 030 over. While I had it apart I checked the camshaft specs with a digtal micrometer. All the lobes were good and it is a Competition Cam grind 228 degrees duration and .477 lift. I used Felpro gaskets and put the engine back together. The block is a 78 400 with 6X heads and 73 intake with the full size carburetion base openings and EGR blocked. My father rebuilds Q-Jets and provided me with a 78 Q-Jet that was completely cleaned dyed and plated and performance rebuilt. This engine starts idles and accelerates as perfect as it gets. The transmission shifts fine ( I did change the fluid) appears to be stock toque converter, no shift kit. Driveshaft u-joints have been replaced at some point because they have lube fittiings. The posi traction rear end has 3.73 gears. I know this because I counted the teeth when I changed the fluid. The exterior paint is in great shape. Has a few small knicks scratches that were touched up with correct paint. Only noticeable if you are looking closely for imperfections. Has small rust bubble under paint on hood and right rear quarter panel. Again not noticeable until looking closely. Interior is in very good condition as you can see by pictures. Options on this car are as follows: Power windows Power locks Power steering Power antenna Tilt wheel Rear defogger WS6 suspension with 8" snowflakes in great shape T-Tops with the original bags. Vehicle also has dual exhaust with headers. A/C has been removed power antenna has been unplugged behind glove box because motor kept running. The antenna stays up and radio works fine. Power door locks work intermittently. All other power options work fine. That is all I can think of to mention. If you have any questions my email is Brzibart@gmail.com or can call or text me at 502-235-4813 my name is Brian. Please don't bid if you don't have cash. I am selling this car and using the money to restore a 79 Bandit T/A in case any one wondered. Thanks for bidding and good luck.

Watch as Hot Rod goes from El Paso to LA the hard way

Tue, 21 Feb 2012

There are few things simultaneously more romantic and idiotic than taking a road trip in a beaten-down heap of a car. Trust us. We know. David Freiburger and Mike Finnegan of Hot Rod Magazine fame recently undertook an epic trip from El Paso, Texas to Los Angeles with the express goal of doing so for under $1,500, including the purchase price of a vehicle, food, lodging, repairs and, most importantly, fuel. With this in mind, the duo settled on a 1972 Pontiac Catalina for a lofty $650. Hilarity ensues.
Realizing that no one actually wants a Catalina sulking around the shop, Freiburger and Finnegan put the car up for auction on eBay Motors the instant they had the title in hand. By the time they rolled into Hot Rod HQ, the vehicle sold for a little over $500.
The video is part of a new series called Roadkill that should document similar adventures. Keep your eyes peeled for more calamity-soaked clips in the near future. In the meantime, hit the jump to check it out yourself.

'67 Chevy Corvair convertible vs. '86 Pontiac Fiero in cult classic showdown

Fri, 22 Aug 2014

Every few a decades, the folks running General Motors lose their minds briefly try to market a car that public doesn't see coming and often aren't ready for. In the '60s there was the rear-engine, air-cooled Chevrolet Corvair, then the mid-engine Pontiac Fiero in the '80s and the completely bizarre Chevy SSR in the 2000s. What all of these had in common was that they bucked the trend for American models of their era, for better or worse. The latest episode of Generation Gap tasked the hosts with finding two cult classic vehicles to choose between; they came come up with two of these quirky products from The General.
On the classic side, there's a 1967 Chevy Corvair Monza convertible. Being from later in the production run, it wears slightly more aerodynamic styling than the earlier, boxier examples. Hanging out back is an air-cooled, 2.7-liter flat-six pumping out a robust 95 horsepower. In the other corner is the somewhat more modern 1986 Pontiac Fiero SE with a mid-mounted, 2.5-liter "Iron Duke" four-cylinder, an engine nearly ubiquitous in GM cars of the '80s.
Judging by when they were new, the Corvair was far more successful than the Fiero with over 1.8 million sold. Of course, Ralph Nader's book Unsafe at Any Speed kind of poisoned the well, even if the poor safety reputation wasn't entirely deserved. The Fiero on the other hand only lasted for a few model years before shuffling off, but it eventually got its own performance boost with the V6 version and rather attractive GT models. Check them both out in the video and tell us in Comments which you want in your garage.

Trans Am Depot teases 2014 GTO

Mon, 24 Jun 2013

Here comes the Judge. Court is in session. The verdict is in. How many more tired clichés can we come up with? It hardly seems to matter, because it's happening: Trans Am Depot has announced via the teaser video below that it is launching a 2014 GTO, complete with Carousel Red (bright orange, really) paint and full Judge badging.
The car is based on Trans Am Depot's 6T9 Goat, which, in case you don't get the reverential references, is meant to mimic the look of the 1969 Pontiac GTO. As with the company's other cars -including the 2013 Hurst Edition Trans Am we recently drove - the GTO will be based on the current Chevy Camaro, which means two doors, V8 engines and rear-wheel drive, just like the muscle cars of days past.
As for actual details of what's under the 2014 GTO's hood, we're completely left hanging. We'd expect some sort of power adder (turbo, supercharger or possibly some other form of a highly massaged version of the Camaro's V8), and we certainly know that GM has any number of hi-po crate engines to choose from.
