Up for auction is a nice 1979 Pontiac Trans Am. I have owned this car for 7 years, so I have a good knowledge what you are bidding on. I will do my best to describe everything in detail, but ask questions if you have them. I am an honest person and have 100% feedback.
I purchased this car Thanksgiving weekend of 2006. I drove down to Alabama and purchased it from a man who was selling to to medical bills and health issues. He had owned this car for many years.

This is a WS6 model with 4 wheel disc brakes. It handles amazing for a car of that age. The suspension and steering feels like it should. No shakes, rattles, goes straight down the road and corners on a rail. This is not a numbers matching car. The motor is a 6.6 400 from a 1974 trans am. 1974 was a good HP year, that put out 225 HP stock. The motor was rebuilt about 10 years ago, and has a mild cam. It has a newer Edelbrock 600 cfm carb and intake. It has a Black Majic electric fan w/ thermostat and also is setup with an electric fuel pump and pressure regulator. The motor runs very good. It is a little cold blooded until it warm up, but start great and idles great as well. Doesn't smoke or burn oil. I typically drive it approx. 300 miles a year tops, and is Always in the garage when not driven. I don't believe I have ever driven it even in the rain.

Most of the 1979 WS6 Trans Am's were 4 speed manuals. This is an automatic, and I have seen a few over the years that were equipped with automatic as well. The rear end is Posi. I am unsure of the gear ratio. The gasket on the pan has a small leak. Nothing major, just enough to notice a few drips after sitting for a while. The transmission shifts smoothy like it should also. Overall the drive train is very solid to the best of my knowledge.

The tires i put on new a couple of years ago and have very low miles, and as you can see are nice wide high performance hankook tires.
I drove down to Alabama to pickup this car so that I would have a cleaner body that would last without the rust and corrosion issues of a lot of old cars. The floors, trunk, frame, and complete undercarriage is very nice. No corrosion or scale problems, wholes or otherwise. It is not painted black anymore and has surface rust from the years, but not anything other than that. The body and paint I would call a nice driver quality. It is not a show car with a deep rich shine you can comb your hair in. There are a few scratches and paint chips, but overall nice condition. This was originally a Gold color car, and as you can see is now yellow. The body has very little filler and has no rust on the exterior painted surface. The body panels line up pretty nice, and the door bushing have been replaced at some point because they don't sag. The weather stripping has also been replaced recently.

All of the lights, blinkers, windshield wipers and things work as they should. There is no air conditioning at this time, was removed at some point years ago. The tachometer quit working last summer. The factory oil and temp gauges do not work, but aftermarket temp and oil pressure gauges have been added that work good and look nice. There is still a heater core and a functioning heater. The fan runs on high or off. To be honest I have tried it, but never have to use it...only drive on nice summer days.

The interior is in respectable driver quality as well in my opinion. The seats are comfortable. The headliner is newer and looks great. There is some minor flaking on some of the black trim on the inside that could use some touch up. The carpet is in good condition.

I am sure there is more and I could keep on writing. Ask questions if you have them. This is an old car so expect to do some things that you will want to do. Hop in and drive and enjoy an American classic. I will assist in shipping if you pay for and line up a transport company. This is easy to do, and I will help load or meet the truck driver at a convenient location. The car must be paid for in full before it goes anywhere. I can store as long as you need to make arrangements within reason. All sales are final and no warranties expressed or implied. Don't bid if you can pay, and don't show up and expect to deal on the sales price.

GM knew about fatal Chevy ignition problem decade before recall

Fri, 21 Feb 2014

Well, this is not good for General Motors. Following a report last week that GM was recalling 778,000 Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 compacts over concerns that the ignition could switch out of the "run" position without warning, USA Today reports that the Detroit-based behemoth knew about the issue, which affected 2005 to 2007 Cobalts (the Cobalt shown above and in the gallery is from 2010) and 2007 Pontiac G5s, all the way back in 2004.
The information comes from a deposition in a civil lawsuit against GM, obtained by USA Today, which claims that a GM engineer experienced the issue while the then-new model was undergoing testing. The issue was "solved" when a technical service bulletin was issued in 2005, informing dealers to install a snap-on key cover on the cars of customers who complained about the issue. According to the Cobalt's program engineering manager, Gary Altman, the cover was an "improvement, it was not a fix to the issue."
The case where the depositions were made was from 2010, and involved Brooke Melton, a 29-year-old pediatric nurse in Georgia who was killed on her birthday. At the time, police claimed she was going too fast on a wet, rural road, although it later came out through the black box that her car's ignition had come out of the "run" position at least three seconds before the accident (the max amount of time a black box records before a wreck), disabling her airbags, power steering and anti-lock brakes. According to USA Today, police said Melton was "traveling too fast for the roadway conditions," although it's impossible to know if she'd have been in the wreck, which injured the occupants of another vehicle, had her 2005 Chevy not shut off. GM settled the Melton family's case, although the details remain confidential.

Lutz dishes dirt on GM in latest Autoline Detroit

Bob Lutz sits down for Autoline Detroit - Click above to watch video after the jump
Autoline Detroit recently played host to Bob Lutz, and, as is always the case, the former General Motors vice chairman dished out some great commentary. Lutz was promoting his new book Car Guys vs. Bean Counters: The Battle for the Soul of American Business, and talk quickly turned to his role as it related to product development and high-level decision making at GM. While on the topic of brand management, Lutz revealed a few rather interesting tidbits about his former employer:
All Chevrolet vehicles were required to have five-spoke aluminum wheels and a chrome band up front, as part of the Bowtie brand's overall image.

Aficionauto sits down with The Hoff and KITT

Fri, 10 Oct 2014

The latest video from The Aficionauto is the perfect palate cleanser for Knight Rider fans after finding out that Justin Bieber is the voice of KITT in an upcoming film. Host Christopher Rutkowski says that the Knight Industries Two Thousand is one of the most requested vehicles to appear on the series and for good reason - Michael Knight's Pontiac Trans-Am is among the most famous cars to ever appear on television.
While the video isn't able to showcase one of the original KITTs from the series, it does get star David Hasselhoff to drive his personal replica and talk about the lasting legacy of the show. The highlight here might be seeing The Hoff back behind the wheel in the open desert basically recreating Knight Rider's opening sequence.
With all of its flashing lights and gizmos, you can probably make the argument that KITT is pretty cheesy, and the show itself was never exactly a pillar of high-quality drama on television. Despite that, the series still provides a ton of good-natured fun, and The Hoff's continued enthusiasm for it is pretty infectious. Check out The Aficionauto video to take another ride with Knight Rider.
