I bought this from the original owner.  Engine, transmission, suspension, interior all restored about 10k miles ago.  Engine is 406 Olds(original, stock to car) and was rebuilt down to the crank.  Transmission was professionally rebuilt.  Radiator re-cored.  All suspension got new rubbers, shocks.  Alignment just done.  New battery and oil change.   New tires and wheels.  Just passed California emissions (SMOG) testing-- probably the toughest in the country, and speaks volumes as to how she runs.  Rust free.  Original paint except for front bumper and rear trunk foil.  Body does have small dents, nicks.  No panel has ever been replaced or painted.   New interior-- seats, carpet, headliner, rocker covers, trunk carpet.  No cracks on dash.  New rear deck and speakers.  New Retro stereo with modern jacks for Iphone, etc.  Power windows.  Modern alarm with power door and trunk release.  Exhaust is like new.  New heavier rear sway bar.   Starts, cruises, brakes, just as it should.  Biggest thing I think it needs is new weather strip around the doors and trunk, not urgent.  Turns a lot of heads.  Tons of fun.   Lots of receipts.  Clean title in my name.  I just need the space.   I have a bunch o' pictures here: http://s968.photobucket.com/user/motogodojo/library/1979%20Pontiac%20Firebird%20Formula

Tony Stewart to star in Smoke Is The Bandit web series

Mon, 10 Mar 2014

NASCAR driver Tony Stewart is making good use of his nickname Smoke in new videos inspired by the 1970s classic Smokey and the Bandit. The original is one of the quintessential automotive movies of its era with a fantastic combination of slapstick comedy and great car stunts in a Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. If you've never seen it, check it out immediately.
In the new six-part Smoke IS the Bandit web series, Stewart takes on the role of Burt Reynolds' famous character complete with huge mustache. But instead of trying to smuggle cases of Coors beer it's Mobil 1 oil. The series promises to recreate many of the famous scenes from the movie and includes cameos from other NASCAR drivers.
To complete the look, future videos just need a quality replacement for a young Sally Field to ride shotgun. It would also be really cool if Reynolds could make a brief appearance at some point. Scroll down to check out the trailer and the first episode in the series.

NHTSA could add 1M cars to GM recall

Wed, 13 Mar 2013

The Detroit Free Press is reporting that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration may expand a recall campaign for faulty brake lamps. The agency is currently looking into complaints that certain 2004-2011 Chevrolet Malibu models as well as some 2007-2009 Saturn Aura sedans may have brake lights that do not illuminate when the driver presses the pedal. Alternatively, the lamps may also illuminate without input from the driver. General Motors recalled 8,000 Pontiac G6 models from the 2005 model year for the same problem, and NHTSA is currently investigating whether to add 550,000 more G6 models built between 2005 and 2009 to the list for the same issue.
In addition, investigators are currently examining 97 complaints from Malibu and Aura owners with the same trouble. If NHTSA adds those models to the recall campaign, more than one million units could be covered. GM, meanwhile, says there have been no accidents or injuries as a result of the problem.

General Lee takes on Bandit T/A in classic Hollywood car showdown [w/poll]

Fri, 26 Aug 2011

You don't have to be born in the 1960s or 1970s to be able to recognize the General Lee from The Dukes of Hazzard and the Pontiac Trans Am from Smokey and the Bandit. These old school four-wheeled stars seem to transcend demographics thanks to the miles of film that show the orange 1969 Dodge Charger and the jet-black 1977 Pontiac Trans Am performing seemingly impossible stunts.
The folks at Hot Rod magazine are obviously hip to this fact, and they put together a fun video in tribute of the instantly recognizable duo. Hit the jump to watch on as Sam Young and James Smith replace Bo Duke and The Bandit for a bit of dirt-road shenanigans in a pair of otherwise well cared for classics. We're not so sure we'd call it the best chase scene ever, but it sure looks like a lot of fun.
More importantly, which of these two cars would you rather own? Have your say in our poll below.
