1961 Pontiac Catalina "delete" Sd 389 Tri Power,solid Lifter 368hp,4 Speed,posi on 2040-cars

Year:1961 Mileage:41765
Location:

Yellow Springs, Ohio, United States

Can't be many of these ever made with these options------that is , no options, known as a "Delete" car.  I'm told by the previous owner this car is original with it's Super Duty parts. It has correct numbers on the castings, beyond that I'm not sure how to document originality for a 61. FWIW the previous owner seemed to know a great deal about Super Duty cars, as well as having photos of himself with a variety of other notorious Pontiac SD lovers. To the best I can tell this is pretty much an original car. It is way cool.

Super Duty 389 w'solid lifters, tri power with it's unique air cleaner (no snorkels w'solid lifters). Correct sump, cast iron exhaust headers, intake manifold, carbs, harmonic balancer, heads, block, upper water neck, dist, etc. Only mod I can think of is an electric fuel pump was fitted. Also have separate air filters for show.

    4 speed.

Engine fires up easily and runs great with nice oil pressure. Very docile just running on the center carb. Press the other two into action and things get busy. With the full exhaust hooked up it is actually very quiet. Pull the plugs and it ain't!

Clutch feels good. Brakes stop well (within reason) and car drives very nice. No issues except passenger side exhaust rubs the shock once in awhile. I'll try to get that tweaked.

Beautiful body, solid original floors, just what you dream of finding. It was a California car and has never been rusted. At present it has one small blister on the driver's door, it is still a good rock solid car. See photos. Original interior in very nice shape. Some patina, yes, but pretty remarkable, in my opinion, for being original. It has an added oil pressure and water temp gauge.

    Glass is all good.

Trim is all good. Again, some patina, but it looks great.

Paint is over 30 years old but still looks pretty darn nice with a bit of wax. I'd guess it's "Good Driver" level. I love the overall even patina of this car. Just so nice. I see no signs of previous rust repair.

Car comes with a second set of rear wheels with Goodyear Blue Streak Dragway Stock tires. Also a set of narrow front tires. Yes, it was a drag car in it's early life. Previous owner showed me a photo of it lettered up, wish I'd gotten a copy.

I'm somewhat new to Pontiac Super Duties, and info is kinda scarce, but I do have some good reference material. I'm trying to get up to speed here. I'll answer questions best I can. comments welcome.

    Thanks for looking!

David Hasselhoff's own KITT replica up for auction

Tue, 08 Apr 2014

Depending on when and where you grew up, the name David Hasselhoff likely conjures up images of Knight Rider, Baywatch, pop singer, or possibly a washed-up TV actor, but one thing that can never be taken away from The Hoff is his connection to one of the greatest automotive icons in pop culture. The Knight Industries Two Thousand, usually shortened to simply KITT, was the real star of Knight Rider for many fans. Based on a Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, the car combined snarky quips for comedy relief and stunts to provide much of the show's actions. Now, Julien's Auctions is selling Hasselhoff's own replica as part of a larger sale of the actor's personal memorabilia collection.
This recreation is based on a 1986 Firebird and comes with all of the tech on the inside that now seems hilariously outdated, like the yoke steering wheel and plethora of buttons. The interior also thoughtfully includes a voice box with over 4,000 sound clips from the show. With a 5.0-liter V8 and an automatic transmission, performance is likely adequate and period correct. According to the listing, this car was created by fans and given to the Hoff. Sadly, the replica doesn't convert to Super Pursuit Mode like KITT could in later seasons, and we most associate KITT with conventional front-hinged doors to go with the power t-tops and ejector seats.
Bidding currently sits $27,500 with eight bids, since starting at $15,000. Julien's predicts it will sell for between $30,000 and $50,000. If there is some nostalgia for KITT in your heart, there is still plenty of time to bid.

Saturn Vue ignition switch leads to new group of GM recalls totaling 312k

Fri, 08 Aug 2014

General Motors has another spate of recalls to announce. This time they cover 312,280 vehicles worldwide, including 269,041 of in the US, in a total of six campaigns. In 2014, the automaker has recalled 29,079,765 vehicles worldwide, with 25,754,356 of those in the US.
The largest among them covers 215,243 units of the Saturn Vue from 2002-2004 model years worldwide, 202,115 in the US. It's possible for the for the key to be removed even when the ignition isn't in the OFF position. The company knows of two crashes and one injury caused by this problem. Dealers are checking the parts and replacing the ignition cylinder and key set, if necessary.
Next is 72,826 models worldwide (48,059 vehicles in the US) of the 2013 Cadillac ATS four-door sedan, 2013 Buick Encore and 2013 Chevy Trax in Canada. It's possible that the for lap belt pretensioner to retract but not to lock, which could increase occupant movement during a crash. Both front, outboard lap belt pretensioners are being replaced, and a stop-sale is in effect on unsold models until the problem is repaired. There are no known crashes or injuries, though.

GM doing fine at retaining Pontiac owners

Fri, 28 Oct 2011

This isn't the first time we've reported positive news about General Motors retaining former Pontiac owners. Get a few more stories like this latest report from Edmund's Auto Observer, and it will mark an ongoing positive trend for GM. Edmunds.com crunched the numbers to see how well the General is hanging on to customers after shutting out the lights at Pontiac, and it found that nearly 40 percent of Pontiac owners stayed with a vehicle from a General Motors brand.
The numbers are a little lower than an earlier R.L. Polk & Company study, but Edmunds says General Motors is keeping more former Pontiac buyers than it has since 2007. Most are turning to vehicles from Chevrolet, especially during January and February of 2011, when GM incentivized Pontiac owners to stay under the umbrella. Those moves seem to have worked, and 28.1 percent of Pontiac owners trading up made the jump into a Bowtie.
Buyers that have gone elsewhere have largely stayed loyal to Domestic automakers, with Ford picking up the most conquests from Pontiac, with 9.4 percent switching. Toyota and Honda picked up 7.4 percent of the pool of former Pontiac drivers. The numbers are defying any predictions that Pontiac buyers would completely exit the General Motors fold, and have climbed up closer to parity with the retention figures of other GM brands from a 2009 low of only 16 percent retention.
