Up for auction is this unusual and extremely rare 1983 Oldsmobile Toronado Brougham Convertible. It has the 5.0 Liter 4 Barrel with Automatic 4 Speed. This is a Hess & Eisenhardt Convertible. The title shows CV which signifies Convertible. It is in what I would call good to very good overall condition. This car is over 30 years old. It has approximately 102,000 miles, which is about 3,300 miles per year. The original window sticker shows $17,502.00 and this is before the convertible conversion by Hess & Eisenhardt. It shows what I would consider to be less than average wear for a car over 30 years old. There is a little wear at the driver's side leather seat. The convertible top works as it should and it is in good condition. It has the glass rear window with the defroster in it. The parade boot and bag are in great condition. Take a look at the original window sticker for a listing of all the options. The issues I'm aware of are the following: Some peeling/bubbling at the rear side marker lights. Some paint fading at the rear bumper filler. The passenger front power window is not working at this time and may be due to a loose wire/connection or could be the window motor. The power antenna may need to be replaced to go up and down properly. The paint shows some aging and there are some small nicks/dings that occur in over 30 years but no large dents. A good interior and exterior detailing will make this car look even better. Aside from the above, it has what I would say is less than average wear and far less than average miles for a 30 year old car. This is a running and driving car. Drive it to car shows as it is. A tune up will make it run and drive even better. Based on the information I have found it could be an Oldsmobile Executive Car, Manufacturer Promo Presentation Car, or could be a car from the 1985 PGA Cherry Hills Golf Tournament or a prize car. I understand that it is a 1983 and the tournament was in 1985 but understand that it took time for Hess & Eisenhardt to do the convertible conversion. Again, the title shows CV signifying Convertible. Also, consider the sticker price on this car was $17,502.00 before the convertible conversion by Hess & Eisenhardt. In short, this was a very expensive car and it is a very rare one as well and in any case it is an extremely low production car. I have done some research and I have contacted the Oldsmobile Transportation Museum and GM Heritage Center. I have not been able to obtain definitive proof regarding whether this was an Oldsmobile Executive Car, Manufacturer Promo Presentation Car, or a PGA Tournament car or a prize car at a PGA tournament. In any case, this is an extremely rare car and it could be that it is 1 of only 9 or 18 cars that were made and even fewer are on the road. Whoever buys it can do additional research. Search it on the internet and see how rare it is. See the picture for uncut Oldsmobile keys, the Original Window Sticker ($17,502.00) and other documentation. If the car doesn't sell, I will most likely keep it and drive it as it is because it's a nice car as it is and gets multiple looks and "thumbs up" all day long. GM recalling 8.4M cars, 8.2M related to ignition problems
Mon, 30 Jun 2014General Motors today announced a truly massive recall covering some 8.4 million vehicles in North America. Most significantly, 8.2 million examples of the affected vehicles are being called back due to "unintended ignition key rotation," though GM spokesperson Alan Adler tells Autoblog that this issue is not like the infamous Chevy Cobalt ignition switch fiasco.
For the sake of perspective, translated to US population, this total recall figure would equal a car for each resident of New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Montana, Delaware, South Dakota, Alaska, North Dakota, the District of Columbia, Vermont and Wyoming. Combined. Here's how it all breaks down:
7,610,862 vehicles in North America being recalled for unintended ignition key rotation. 6,805,679 are in the United States.

Thu, 09 Oct 2014The last time I roped a coworker into an automotive debate, I lost. Resoundingly, I might add. Still, 2,385 voters chose to cast their lots for the Fiat 500 Abarth, as opposed to 5,273 choosing the Ford Fiesta ST, and so I can rest easy in the knowledge that at least 30 percent of you, dear readers, see things my way. I still like to think we have more fun, too.
My loss in the first round of our This or That series, in which two Autoblog editors pick sides on any given topic and then attempt to explain why the other is completely wrong, didn't stop me from picking another good-natured fight, this time with Senior Editor Seyth Miersma. Last time, our chosen sides were eerily similar in design, albeit quite different in actual execution. This time, our vehicular peculiarities couldn't seemingly fall any further from one another: A 1980 Oldsmobile 442 wouldn't seem to match up in comparison to a 1989 BMW 635CSi.
How did we come up with such disparate contenders? Simple, really. Seyth and I mutually agreed to choose a car that's currently for sale online. It had to be built and sold in the 1980s, and it had to be a coupe. The price cap was set at $10,000. The fruits of our searching labors will henceforth be disputed, with Seyth on the side of the Germans, and myself arguing in favor of the Rocket Olds. Am I setting myself up for another lopsided loss?
Jay Leno bangs up his own Toronado in GT6
Wed, 11 Dec 2013Ever since Gran Turismo 4, Jay Leno has had at least one of his cars included in the popular racing simulator (starting with the Tank Car), and more of his machines appears in Gran Turismo 6. They include this nose-heavy, front-wheel-drive V8-powered muscle car. Yes, that aptly describes a 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado - except Leno's is rear-wheel drive. And it has a Cadillac CTS-V race engine modified to pump out 1,070 horsepower.
For the latest Jay Leno's Garage episode, he takes his real Toronado out for a cruise and then drives the virtual one like he stole it, accruing some body damage along the way. Leno also drives the virtual supercar Mercedes-Benz designed for GT6, the AMG Vision Gran Turismo Concept that debuted at the LA Auto Show, along with the real one, which is a 1:1-scale model. The model is radio-controlled and equipped with a small electric motor, sufficient to move it on and off of auto show floors.
