Offered for sale is an absolutely stunning, very original 1961 Mercedes 190SL finished in factory correct “Fire Engine Red” (DB534) over a tan leather interior with what is believed to be only 65k original miles (105,146 km) on its original, numbers matching engine. Originally purchased by an American officer stationed in Germany, the car followed him back to the states, eventually ending up in the hands of a Georgia schoolteacher in the 1980s. The second owner’s pride and joy, the car was always meticulously maintained and cared for, a garage queen through and through. The schoolteacher retired to Florida in the 1990s and it’s around that time that he enlisted a local specialist to perform a mild cosmetic refurbishing while remaining mindful to preserve correctness and originality. The car received a high quality paint job in its original color, a new tan canvas soft top was installed and the interior was reupholstered in the tasteful tan leather and German square weave carpet that you see today. For the ensuing two decades the car remained his weekend driver, entered into car shows and taken to supper on Sunday evenings, until health issues forced him to part with it. Throughout the tenure of his ownership and that of the original owner before him, the car was never left to the elements and consequently the undercarriage and body are both original and entirely solid.

At some point in the 1980s the original Solex carburetors were switched out for aftermarket Mikunis, but the owner always kept all of the original equipment. While the car was nicely set up, in the interest of returning the car to originality our first order of business was to rebuild the original Solexs and reinstall all of the original equipment. I’m happy to report that the car runs flawlessly, idling consistently and pulling strongly and smoothly through each of the original transmission’s gears. The engine’s compression is excellent, there is no smoke, no odd noises or vibrations and the suspension and braking system function exactly as they should. The drive quality is incredibly tight, wholly indicative of a well-cared-for, low mileage example that can be driven anywhere. While it’s our opinion that the car’s far too nice to be a daily driver, its mechanicals would certainly allow for it.

Cosmetically, the pictures tell the tale – the car is absolutely gorgeous, the definition of a “head-turner”. The body is straight and the finish is consistent and lustrous, holding up beautifully despite its age. The glass and chrome are in excellent original condition, the rubber is free of dryness or shrinking and the car comes with the rare and desirable “big window” optional hardtop. The rich tan interior presents handsomely and is entirely correct, right down to the optional original “kinder-seat” in the back. The dash retains its original clock and radio and the steering wheel is in exceptional original condition. The undercarriage is original and solid – any visible discoloration is either road grime or old undercoating that’s flaking off due to wear, not rust – and the trunk is free of rust and retains its original spare wheel and changing tools.

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire an honest and stunning example of one of Mercedes’ most beautiful classic models. The car has all the right things going for it: a gorgeous original color combination, beautiful cosmetically, a solid original body and undercarriage, excellent mechanicals with an original, low mileage, numbers matching engine and transmission and a desirable optional hard top. With 190SLs continuing to appreciate at an amazing rate, this is an excellent investment and an example that deserves the consideration of any serious buyer. Please bid accordingly.

We want this car to go to great home and would be happy to further discuss it and answer any questions, so please feel free to email us or call us at 805-202-4557. You can also visit us online at GoodmanReed.

We’ve always had an appreciation for classic European cars and over the years have created an eclectic personal collection. We only buy cars that we’d personally be interested in owning and generally only sell them to make room for other acquisitions. That time has come for this Mercedes (if the price is right, of course – this isn’t a fire sale). We try to give accurate descriptions of the cars we’re selling, but we’re enthusiasts, not experts, and we encourage and are happy to help facilitate personal or professional inspections. But please do so before bidding, as the alternative harms our ability to make sales to other interested parties who have done their proper due diligence before bidding.

For U.S. buyers a 10% non-refundable deposit is required within 3 days of the auction’s end, the balance to be paid within 7 days of the auction’s end. Foreign buyers must pay in full within 7 business days of the auction’s end. Buyer is responsible for shipping, however we’d be more that happy to help with recommendations and arrangements. The car is listed locally and we reserve the right to end the auction at any time should it sell prior to auction’s end. Thanks for your interest.

Edmunds ranks the best used cars for 2013

Sun, 15 Sep 2013

When people ask us what car we would recommend for them, it's usually not easy to answer. To make a useful recommendation we must consider which of the numerous vehicle segments fits their needs best, and then choose one of the many vehicles offered in each segment. For some people, new cars don't meet their expectations of value, because they lose so much of it the moment they are purchased and driven off the dealer lot. For them, there's always the used-car market, where great deals can be found, but cars' histories of reliability and maintenance records - and perhaps that Certified Pre-Owned warranty - become ever-important factors playing into purchase choice.
To help out, Edmunds has done us the favor of assembling a list of the best used vehicles money can buy, covering model years 2006-2011, according to what it considers the most important criteria when shopping for used autos: reliability, safety, value and availability. That means unreliable, unsafe, super-expensive or limited-edition models don't appear on the list, but instead cars from each segment that are more likely to satisfy the general population.
There are some real goodies on the list, including but not limited to vehicles such as the capable Honda Fit, the cultish Honda Accord coupe (which can be had with a 240-horsepower V6 and a six-speed manual transmission some years), and the powerful Chevrolet Corvette. While Edmunds' choice of the Volvo C70 for best used convertible baffled us at first (not that it's a bad car), it redeemed itself by stating that the Mazda MX-5 still is an unofficial top choice if you don't require more than two seats.

2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK250 Bluetec gets 33 mpg, priced from $38,950*

Tue, 30 Apr 2013

It's been more than a year since we first saw the 2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK250 Bluetec unveiled at the 2012 New York Auto Show, but it looks like the compact diesel crossover is finally starting to roll into dealerships. Those wanting to buy a diesel GLK will only have to pony up an extra $1,500 over a base, gas-powered GLK350, as the GLK250's starting price is listed at $38,590 (*not including $905 destination charge).
The turbocharged 2.1-liter four-cylinder diesel produces 200 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, and Mercedes-Benz has also provided some fuel economy numbers for this model, with claimed EPA estimates of 24 miles per gallon city and 33 mpg highway. There is no listing for the GLK250 on the EPA's website yet, but the figures represent significant increase over the GLK350's lackluster 19 mpg city and 25 mpg highway figures, which are for the rear-wheel drive model. The GLK250 comes standard with the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system - a $2,000 option on GLK350 - meaning that if you want an all-wheel-drive version of the 2013 GLK, it's actually cheaper to opt for the diesel model. Head over to the Mercedes-Benz site for the full 2013 GLK-Class configurator.

2017 Aston Marin Lagonda could live on Mercedes M-Class platform

Tue, 29 Oct 2013

A few weeks ago, we brought you news from the launch of the Aston Martin Vanquish Volante that the British brand, which is formally known as Aston Martin Lagonda, was still planning on going ahead with a Lagonda-badged crossover. Now comes word that that vehicle could very well be based on a Mercedes-Benz M-Class.
When the first Lagonda Concept debuted at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show, it sat on a Mercedes-Benz GL-Class platform, some four years before Aston Martin and Mercedes-AMG deal was inked. And with that partnership, which will see Aston Martin gain access to AMG electrics and "bespoke, V8 powertrains," the opportunities for platform sharing are many.
Dr. Ulrich Bez, the boss of Aston Martin, told the UK's AutoCar, "I look at what Porsche is doing with the 911 as its core business and then it is able to do models like the Cayenne based on the Volkswagen Touareg. It is good business." We've said many times that we'll tolerate exotic CUVs and SUVs if it means keeping the beloved core models alive, which has been the case with Porsche. We see no reason Aston Martin wouldn't be able to do the same.
