Up for auction is a 1985 Mercedes Benz grey market euro 500sel. This was a Texas car and imported through Texas, it has the stickers on the door jamb. As seen the paint is burnt from the Texas sun and will need repainted, there is no rust on the car, it is a very solid car. I bought this car as a project car but have been laid off and need to sell it, my loss is your gain! I have only owned this car since the end of December, I have known the guy that owned it before me for a long time. The seats do show wear as seen, it is missing its A-pillar trim. It has a fairly new exhaust system on it. All the windows work as does the sunroof, the sunroof is slow to close. I was replacing the window rollers on the pass side rear door, thats why the door panel is off. I have the door panel and it is in good condition. The drivers side rear seat wont move but you can hear the motor run, the pass side rear seat works fine. The rear parcel shelf is out, it was in pretty bad shape, it comes with the original shelf and an extra one. It also comes with a VERY nice set (new?) AMG replica rims in 17" with very nice P zero Nero tires, tons of tread left. All lights work and all the switches seem to work on the inside, everything on the dash is in German. All the gauges work as do all the dash lights. Things it will need: All of the wood in the car shows wear, some of the dash wood is loose. It has a dash cover that is on the dash now but just sitting on it and not glued down. Starter solenoid sticks, you have to hit the key a few times for it to catch. I lost/misplaced the rear window switch when I had the door panel off. It has a high idle, it idles at 1300 rpm in park, I never had the time to find the problem. It will need brakes. The hood opening lever under the dash is missing. The AC works but the compressor is noisy. The hood insulation is off as seen but I have a brand new one that goes with the car. The odo is WRONG, its showing 112k miles, thats when it stopped working as the little gear is stripped, its a very easy fix. The previous owner kept records on his mileage and it actually has 135350 miles on it. We put 135350 on the title as I was goig to fix the ODO that way there would be no mileage discrepancy. the ODO WILL NEED FIXED! The trunk is full of extra parts!! It drives down the road nice and straight, it has a ton of power and rides on air! It would be a pretty easy project for someone and would be a very nice Euro when done. All it really needs is a paint job and the AMG rims put on it and it will be a real head turner! This is all I know about the car since I have only had it a few months, it has sat in my garage waiting on me. I have a clear Ohio title in hand and it is ready for its new home, I wish I could keep it as the Grey Markets are hard to find. Brabus 800 Roadster is a power-mad aristocrat
Wed, 06 Mar 2013If we're being completely honest, we haven't exactly been in love with the aesthetics of the sixth-generation Mercedes-Benz SL-Class. It's mostly a front-end issue, with its glowering eagle-eye headlamps and upright, dinner-plate-sized Three-Pointed Star coming across to us as overwrought. That's particularly troublesome for a roadster whose history has of the most elegant designs of all time in its back catalog. Somehow, the new R231 generation's brash visuals seem more at home on this Brabus 800 Roadster to us.
That's probably because the high-dollar German tuner has turned up the wick on the SL's visuals even further, with carbon fiber bodywork, a more aggressive aero kit, matte hood scoop and complex two-finish wheels. It's all-the-way committed to its brashness, in other words - and justifiably so. Anything with 800 horsepower and 1,047 pound-feet of torque has earned the right to look however it wants, right?
Brabus started with the SL65 and its not-exactly-underpowered 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12, and went to town, fitting their own turbocharger and intercooler system, along with a less-restrictive exhaust system with driver-selectable sound levels and new engine electronics. The result is a 3.7-second 0-62 mph time, an electronically limited top whack of 217 mph... and one seriously compromised toupée.
XCAR marks 20-year anniversary of Senna's passing with Mercedes 190E Cosworth
Thu, 01 May 2014While the automotive world is focusing on the twentieth anniversary of Ayrton Senna's death, there was much, much more to the legendary driver than his untimely passing at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix.
XCAR has the story of a younger Senna, who, by a stroke of luck, found himself matched up against a veritable dream team of nine Formula One champions, not to mention a cadre of German touring car aces. A "probably still pissed (drunk)" James Hunt, hard-driving Niki Lauda and future champion and rival Alain Prost, were in attendance for the one-off, spec race, which was put on by Mercedes-Benz, in honor of the opening of the Nürburgring's Grand Prix circuit. And Senna was on hand with the explicit goal of besting them all.
Each driver was handed a lightly modified, but brand-new 190E 2.3-16 Cosworth, a car that can best be though of as the distant ancestor of the lovable C63 AMG. As for the race itself, well, it was sort of like an introduction of what the sport could come to expect from the Brazilian.
Mercedes rules out hybrid supercar, promises SLS successor
Sat, 16 Mar 2013The recent Geneva Motor Show was a festival of hypercars, with the presence of not one, but three over-the-top debuts: the Lamborghini Veneno, McLaren P1 and Ferrari LeFerrari. The latter two have hitched their carbon fiber bumpers to the electrification bandwagon by using hybrid-electric powertrains not entirely unlike the propulsion systems we've come to know in cars like the Toyota Prius and Chevrolet Volt. Does that mean the flow of electrons up the four-wheeled food chain will eventually consume our hallowed supercars? Not if AMG has anything to say about it.
AMG Director of Vehicle Development Tobias Moers recently confirmed that not only will there be a successor to the Mercedes-Benz performance division's SLS AMG, he notes that its internal combustion engine will most definitely not be sharing living quarters with an electric drivetrain. Instead, AMG plans to focus on further pushing the power and efficiency envelope of the internal combustion engine and advancing the use of lightweight materials to achieve their goals. The first example of this effort can be seen in the new SLS AMG Black Series that incorporates many weight-saving techniques to shed some 154 pounds from the SLS AMG GT (above), which itself is lighter than the standard SLS AMG.
Furthermore, Moers remarks that his company is happy to leave the hypercar segment to companies like Ferrari and McLaren. He admits that, "Ferrari in the hyper-car segment is still a different brand than AMG. We have to be honest..." So rather than taking the SLS further upmarket to do battle with bulls and stallions, Moers hinted that the next-generation SLS may be joined by another performance model that fits neatly between itself and the C63 AMG.
