2004 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG, Supercharged, 156,437 Original Miles, 2 Owners From New, Perfect Running Condition, Fully Serviced

VIN # WDBUF76J04A557126

This 2004 Mercedes Benz E55 is a great running and driving example of the E-Series of Mercedes-Benz automobiles cars that provide stylish, reliable, and VERY fast transportation.

The condition of this car is totally original and very well presented.  The car shows very few signs of age and has 156,437 miles on the odometer.  I am the third owner from new and have a full set of service records, so if you'd like to see them, please let me know and I will email or fax them directly to you.

This car still retains every option available on an American specification car at the time except the Distronic cruise control option, Parktronic, and the rear window shade.  Please note the car DOES have the standard cruise control.

The only modification I have made is removing the identification numbers from the rear deck and front fender. They are self-adhesive, so if you’d like to re-apply them, they are available from any dealer and very easy to install.

Please note I also have a set of 4 wheels and snow tires.  The tires all have about 2 seasons of winter driving left on them and the wheels are in very nice condition.  I ordered the wheels to look as similar as possible to the original wheels.  If you’d like to see photos of the wheels, let me know and I will pull them down and email them to you.  And yes, the first photo photo in the ad is a photo of the actual car I'm selling.  The process is called Studio Effect, and is done by Dimostra.  If you'd like more info to use for one  of your cars, trucks, motorcycles, or almost anything collectible, please let me know and I will email you his information.

BODY:

This E55 wears the factory correct and original 197 Obsidian Black metallic paint, which is in very nice original condition, with no cracking, fading, or checking evident.  It does have some slight imperfections in various spots, but for a 10 year old car, the paint and condition of the body is amazing.

The glass and seals are in excellent condition and there are no leaks evident.

The sunroof also works perfectly and does not leak.

The body trim, including the aluminum and rubber, are in very good condition.  It’s not perfect, but it’s very nice considering the age of the car.  No trim has been replaced, nor has it needed to be, on the car.  It has all been preserved and cared for properly over the years.

INTERIOR:

The interior is trimmed in the correct charcoal leather interior.  The seating areas are in very condition, with no rips or tears, as are the door panels and dashboard.  The wood trim is also in very nice condition.  The carpet is also original and in very nice condition.

All of the accessories, including the climate control, stereo system, cd changer and navigation system are in perfect working order.

All of the windows power up and down and work perfectly.  The trunk is in very nice condition and the trunk covering is in excellent condition with no rips, tears, or missing pieces, and the spare tire, wheel and jack are all accounted for and are also in very nice condition.

UNDERCARRIAGE:

The underside of the car is in line with a well- cared for car.  Again, it is very solid and very well preserved, with no evidence of any accident damage.

ENGINE and ENGINE COMPARTMENT:

The powerplant in this E55 is the original 5.5-liter V-8 supercharged gas engine.  It is completely original and as you can see from the photos, very well preserved.  All aspects of the motor are in perfect working order, and the compression ratio is exactly where it should be.

The engine bay is completely original, with all components in operational condition.  Every detail of the engine compartment is “Mercedes Correct” and well preserved.  There is some minor wear to certain painted surfaces due to age, but overall, it is very presentable.

All engine and drivetrain maintenance is up to date, including the following services:

-oil and filter change

-air filter replacement

-transmission and differential service

TRANSMISSION:

Every aspect of the transmission functions as it should.  It is up to date with every necessary service.

TIRES, WHEELS, and BRAKES:

The Pirelli tires are in very nice condition, having been replaced in 2012 and do not show any notable wear.  They and are the correct and original size for the E55.

The wheels are the original Mercedes alloy wheels, and are in good condition with minimal wear evident.  I have had the wheels re-done once, so they are in very nice condition, with no “curb rash” evident.  All of the center caps have a sharp Mercedes logo and are original and also in very nice condition.

The entire braking system has been gone through to ensure every part works as it should.  All rotors, pads, and seals have been replaced and brake fluid flushed.

Driving the E55 in almost any winter condition is next to impossible, but with the snow tires and wheels installed, driving is easy.  When I installed the snow tires, a few seasons ago, I couldn’t believe the difference.

OVERALL DRIVING IMPRESSIONS:

This E55 runs and drives as should – It’s barely broken in!  The 8-cylinder supercharged powerplant runs and accelerates smoothly and very quickly.

The car drives around town and on the open road with no squeaks, creaks, or rattles.  It has had all of the necessary service recently performed including oil-change, tune up, installation of new battery, and transmission and differential service.  It needs absolutely nothing to drive, show, and enjoy.  All of the mechanical aspects of the car work as they should.

PLEASE NOTE:

This E55 still retains all of its original or N.O.S. components!  This means the engine, transmission, rear end, etc. are original or correct to the car.  All of the numbers, markings, etc., are correct.  THIS E55 HAS NEVER BEEN MODIFIED IN ANY WAY!

If you’ve never driven an E55 of this period, you are in for a treat with this one!

If you are serious about purchasing this vehicle, I encourage you to come, take a look, and drive it.  I can also provide you with additional photos of any specific part you have questions about.  I also have all of the service records, and can fax them upon request.

You or your mechanic are also welcome to put the car on a lift and perform any drivetrain inspection you wish, including a compression check.

AMG, the performance division of Mercedes-Benz, is well known for building seriously fast versions of standard Mercedes models. As proof of their popularity, AMG sales are up dramatically. So why are AMG products, like the latest E55 AMG sedan, so desirable? Well, it takes only one turn behind the wheel to understand that it’s more than just speed.

Not that the 2004 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG isn’t fast. In fact it’s the most powerful E- Class sedan that Mercedes has ever built! In the E55, AMG’s 5.4-liter Kompressor V8 engine roars out 469 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. Torque which is available at only 2,650 rpm. In addition to the 13.1-pounds of boost from the screw-type supercharger and intercooler, everything from cylinder heads to crankcase has been reinforced or reshaped to produce maximum thrust. Thrust which thunders to the rear wheels through a 5-speed multi-mode automatic using AMG’s SPEEDSHIFT software.

With 35% quicker shifts, SPEEDSHIFT delivers maximum acceleration and efficiency. It’s also linked to Mercedes’ TOUCHSHIFT, which allows manual gear change through buttons on the steering wheel. And allows the E55 AMG to vault to 60 in , are you ready for this? , 4.4 seconds. The 1/4 mile rips by in only 12.7 seconds at 114 miles-per-hour. That’s just a hair slower than a Porsche 911 Turbo, and real pin-you-to-the-seat acceleration. But it’s also smooth as silk, with a turbine-like drive from idle to redline. A testament to the remarkable skills of AMG.

All that power can easily unhook the rear tires, so Mercedes has equipped the E55 with its sophisticated ASR traction and ESP stability systems. They combine engine control and braking to automatically adjust cornering if your ambition outruns your driving skill. Both systems can be turned off, and this allowed our test drivers to hang the rear end out and really test the semi-active multi-link air suspension system, and sticky ZR-rated 18-inch tires. Fat 245/40s on the front, and fatter 265/35s on the rear.

With or without electronic assist, turn in is sharp and lightning quick, thanks to the precise speed-sensitive steering. Steering feedback is far superior to the stock E-Class. Despite a fair amount of body roll, the retuned air suspension delivers a tight, stable feel, even when pushed really hard.

Braking is also high caliber, with stops from 60 averaging a fine 126 feet. The big brakes discs, with 8-piston front calipers, are controlled by ABS, Brake Assist, and Sensotronic Brake Control, again with an AMG overhaul. While stability is rock solid, the fly-by-wire brake pedal is absent of feel. It’s vague and soft until everything connects to stop you in an instant.

In the less demanding environment of day-to-day driving, the E55 AMG is even more impressive. Ride quality is firm but never harsh, even over choppy pavement. And despite its power, the engine responds smoothly to small throttle inputs, making it easy to drive in stop-and- go traffic.

While the E55 doesn’t look as hot as it drives, it’s still distinctive compared to the standard E-Class. The increasingly generic lines are beefed up by a more aggressive front fascia and grille treatment, side sill extensions, deeper rear fascia, and twin chrome exhaust pipes, plus AMG-designed Twin-Spoke alloy wheels Options available on all E-Class models include the new Panoramic sunroof, and the solar-powered ventilation system, that keeps the car cooler when parked in the sun.

The interior is also a pretty cool place to be, with all the usual E-Class amenities, plus black ‘‘Birdseye’’ maple trim and chrome-rimmed AMG white-faced gauges. AMG-designed leather-trimmed sport seats provide superb support and comfort, a wide range of power adjustments, plus heat and ventilation. Controls for the standard Harmon Kardon audio system and automatic climate control are typical Mercedes, not the best or worst in their class. A simplified Mercedes COMAND system for audio, navigation and phone is optional But one of the coolest features in newer Mercedes is the KEYLESS GO system. Proximity detectors sense the key and allow you to unlock and start the car with just the push of a button.

The E55 AMG sedan is not only faster than most sports cars, but offers real rear people space, and with its 18.7 cubic-foot trunk, real cargo space as well. And like all AMG products, the E55 is expensive. Base price is $76,720. Still, that’s only slightly more than the less powerful BMW M5.

AMG products are some of the world’s most desirable automobiles. They are always fast, stylish, and exclusive. And it only takes one turn behind the wheel of the 2004 Mercedes-Benz E55 to understand that the AMG appeal is based on a whole lot more than just speed.

Imagine you changed significant-others weekly. Each proves attractive, but each is different. Some are terrific, and you want more time with them. Some you can't wait to show the door. After a while, however, you'd find it difficult to be impressed. Only the best would stand out. It's that way with auto writers. So be impressed when I say the 2004 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG is the greatest car I've tested in 15 years of weekly changes. Price as tested: $90,985. Warranty: 4 years/50,000 miles basic.

First Glance…

You know there's something different about this Mercedes-Benz from the moment you lay eyes on it. It seems lower, sleeker, meaner-looking than other models. Look closer and you'll see four chrome-tipped exhaust tubes exiting beneath the rear bumper. You'll see the word "Kompressor" on each front fender. You'll see "AMG" on the right rear and "E55" on the left. Check out the 18-inch, twin-spoke alloy wheels. The tires are huge, befitting a car that can travel 155 mph on an Autobahn. There are special AMG designs for the air dam, rocker panels and rear apron. Inside, you must look closely to see differences. On the steering wheel, for instance, are two buttons. Move the transmission into manual shift mode and you can press the right button to upshift, the left to downshift. Our tester also had a "Panorama Sunroof" that runs from the windshield to the rear window. Only the front section opens, however. Optional solar panels in the panorama roof create power from sunlight and use it to ventilate the car while it's parked, keeping the cabin cooler. If the sun is too much, a rear window sunshade raises at the touch of a button. And to help night visibility, the bi-Xenon headlights turn with the car, to better illuminate a curve.

In the Driver's Seat…

"2004 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG, Rear View"

The driver's seat is unusual, to say the least. It resembles a race car seat. Wings at the base and sides are part of what Mercedes-Benz calls "Drive Dynamic Seats." They have to be felt to be believed. Go into a left turn, for instance, and the wings hold you firmly in place, but .. you'll feel the right wing puff up! There are air bladders in each wing that activate based on the direction of your turn. Amazing. In hot weather, press a switch downward and air conditioning ventilation comes through the base and back of the front seats. Or press the switch up and the seats are heated. If your E55 AMG has the Parktronic system, beeps and flashing lights inform you how close you're coming to an obstacle when parking. An "Airmatic" air suspension system keeps your E55 AMG level, even under hard cornering. Air shocks change pressure to prevent lean, squat or dive. Rear seat room is plentiful and the 2004 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG can seat five. Every imaginable safety feature is standard, including side air bags front and rear and a full-cabin head protection air cushion system. If an accident occurs, the car calls for assistance. Every control is at hand; every instrument is visible. Everything about this E55 feels perfect.

On the Road…

What makes this an "AMG" is the hand-crafted, supercharged V-8 under the hood. That incredible engine produces a mind-blowing 469 horsepower and 516 lb-ft. of torque. It's enough to rocket the E55 from 0 to 60 in 4.5 seconds! It's enough to run a quarter-mile in mid-12s. It's so fierce that full-bore acceleration from a standstill gave me a headache. Felt like I'd bitten into an ice cream cone. Zowee! And if you're cruising at 75 on the interstate, you have that same rush of power just a toe-tap away. This car passes with fervor possessed by few. A magazine recently tested the fastest production cars and the E55 AMG was one of the top eight. Fastest was a race car, so throw that one out. The rest were 2-seat sports cars, some with near-zero practicality. None could carry five in comfort. No, the E55 is unique. It is the world's fastest, finest sports sedan. Flip on cruise control and a radar beam measures distance to vehicles ahead. The car accelerates and brakes as needed in traffic. Even in fast, heavy traffic, it was superb; an electronic stability program is working all the time to keep you out of an accident by adjusting engine power and braking as needed. And the brakes are the biggest, strongest I've yet encountered.

Journey's End…

It's difficult to sum up the superiority of the 2004 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG in a few words. Its standard equipment, hidden six-stack CD, air conditioning, intelligent 5-speed automatic transmission and on and on , could fill this review. Many of its special features set the bar for others, but our tester also had a navigation system, voice-operated cell phone, satellite radio, electronic trunk closer, and hands-free communication system. Its performance and handling prowess is unmatched by any other sports sedan. It's a full-size car with Porsche/Ferrari zip. They, however, do not carry five in comfort or have a trunk that can swallow two suites' worth of luggage, plus golf bags. Yet for all its awesome power this car is easy to drive around town. It doesn't jerk those inside. Comfort is very good, considering those monster tires. Fuel economy of 21 mpg on the highway is better than a wheezy 6-cylinder Jeep Wrangler tested not long ago. Bottom line: This E55 is a supercar. It's an executive hot rod, the ultimate car to own if you have more than one friend and both power and prestige are your desire. The timid can drive it, but only the bold (and skilled) can hope to tame it. Pity the car that moves into my life next week.

Missouri Mercedes dealer offering free Smart with every SLS AMG purchase

Wed, 05 Dec 2012

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT is an exquisite sports car that probably needs no help flying off dealer lots, even with a starting price of almost $200,000, but Mercedes-Benz of Kansas City has come up with an interesting incentive to sweeten the deal. For buyers who purchase a new SLS AMG from dealer stock before the end of the year, the dealership is throwing in a new Smart Fortwo from its inventory at no charge... with a required coupon no less.
In addition to being a great tactic to get a little free press, the spare car also makes sense as an alternative to the SLS, which measures more than 15-feet long - almost twice the length of a Fortwo - and has a 563-horsepower engine that sucks down gas at the rate of 13 miles per gallon in city driving (and even that's provided you don't give in to the devil on your shoulder). Plus, at the end of the day, this really isn't that big of an incentive. Being given a slow-selling $12,490 car for the purchase of a model starting at $199,500 represents about a six percent incentive, which is along the lines of a $1,900 rebate for a $30,000 car.
To get the free Smart, just visit the Mercedes-Benz of Kansas City Facebook page, redeem the coupon and then go buy yourself a new SLS AMG. Congratulations!

Mercedes-Benz introduces new heavy security M-Class Guard model

Tue, 19 Mar 2013

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled a new addition to the company's line of personal security vehicles. The M-Class Guard features bullet-proof side windows made with special laminated glazing and a polycarbonate inner layer to protect occupants from shards of glass. Mercedes says the M-Class Guard meets protection level VR4 according to the Bullet Resistant Vehicles 2009 standards, based on testing from the independent Ulm-based Ballistics Bureau, which means it can withstand .357 Magnum and .44 fire from multiple angles. It can also stand up to the DM51 hand grenade when equipped with optional floor armoring. Why skimp?
Buyers looking for protection from the world's literal slings and arrows can opt for the ML350 BlueTEC with its 258 horsepower 3.0-liter turbodiesel engine. With 457 pound-feet of torque, the oil-burner should have no trouble hustling the privileged class about. Of course, the ML500 offers a bit more punch courtesy of a 4.6-liter twin-turbo V8 with 408 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque. Prices start at 105,050 euros for the diesel and 118,650 euros for the V8. You can check out the full press release below for more information.

Man makes record-setting drive across the US in 28 hours, 50 minutes

Fri, 01 Nov 2013

Records, as the say, are made to be broken. Whether that's cramming the most hot dogs down your gullet, running a faster mile, or yes, driving across the United States, odds are that there's someone out there wants to eat more, run faster or drive harder. Speaking of that last example, the record for driving from a set location on the east coast, in particular the Red Ball Garage in Manhattan to the Portofino Hotel in Redondo Beach, CA, has been one that has fascinated gearheads since a guy named Cannonball Baker made the trek from New York to LA in 53 hours, 30 minutes, in 1933.
The competition saw its glory days when Car and Driver's Brock Yates came up with the Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash (more affectionately known as the Cannonball Run), although the record was most recently set by Alex Roy and his 32-hour, seven-minute trek behind the wheel of a BMW M5 in 2006. Now, there's a new champion, who made the trip from east to west in a scarcely imaginable 28 hours and 50 minutes, behind the wheel of a 2004 Mercedes-Benz CL55 AMG. That's works out to an average speed of 98 miles per hour over the course of 2,813.7 miles.
His name is Ed Bolian, and Jalopnik has a writeup of the epic voyage that details everything from the history of the Cannonball Run to Bolian's preparation and trouble finding co-drivers, to the trip itself. It is well worth a read.
