Here is my 1994 E320 Wagon, the second one I've owned and 4th in the family.  I've owned it for 2 years now and have refreshed it mechanically, mostly with preventive maintenance in mind, with only the best quality parts purchased mostly from BMA Parts. I have never used Meyle or URO cheap Chinese production junk on this car.  These cars were at one time extremely well cared for but as time goes by, maintenance is often deferred and repairs done shoddily. As an amateur Porsche 911 restoration enthusiast, I like to keep all of my vehicles in the same condition as my 911s.

As soon as I got it, I noticed a minor clunk in the front end. My solution was to replace the entire front suspension and steering. New control arms, H&R lowering springs, sway bar bushings, tie rods, steering damper, strut mount hats, etc. I did put on used Bilstein Sport front struts that a friend had and I think these should be renewed. I will put new ones on if the winning bidder would like to purchase them.  Checked front wheels bearings and they are fine. At the same time I did the neutral safety switch, they always go bad on these cars.  The front turn signal lenses were faded so I put new ones of those on at about the same time. The emergency brake was a little weak so I then installed a new brake shoe kit. Lastly I put on a set of 17" E420 wheels that really complete the car; the Michelins are in great shape.

Last summer I replaced the radiator fan clutch, thermostat and thermostat housing. It's been troublefree since them until this summer when I installed new rear rotors and pads and the driveshaft carrier bearing and housing, and a new antenna mast.

The prior owner had little information about the car, it was his aunt's who had passed away, it was left to him but he was more of a truck guy. Though no records, he said the transmission was rebuilt and driving the car, you can believe it. He put in a new battery, serpentine belt with idler pulleys, fuel filter and the Kenwood stereo.

The interior is very nice as you can see. I also have 2 excellent zebrano wood panels for the main control and the ashtray. It seems Hans had a bad day at the factory and the two don't match very well, so I found two pieces that not only are in excellent condition (better than what is in the car) but also match. The base should be redone. I purchased one to be sent out but never got around to it. Too many projects.

There is no rust on the car but there are bumps and bruises and scuffs as you would expect from a 20 year old car. Someone heavily scuffed the excellent front bumper which still has it's lower corners intact, a rarity, and I have a replacement bumper strip that goes with the car. The grill also got a little pressed in. Of course they didn't leave a note.

What I love about the car: The heated seats. I will miss those. The limited slip differential. Driven with care, this car is excellent in the winter. The stance, it's definitely a look-back car. The way it drives. I've taken it on trips to Chicago and down to North Carolina and has performed flawlessly, in comfort.

Known issues with the car include rear windows don't go down and the rear wiper only works in reverse, an automatic safety feature built in my MB. I got the car this way and never bothered to investigate these two.

Daimler employees can set email to auto-delete during vacation

Mon, 18 Aug 2014

The Internet has shrunk the world in terms of the way people communicate by making it possible to send an email from Oslo and have it show up in Cleveland almost immediately. But that instant contact has wrecked the work/life balance for many. They get home from a long day at the office, yet they can never fully put their feet up and relax because another hour or more of checking and replying to emails awaits. However, German automotive giant Daimler is putting an end to that churn, at least while its employees are on vacation.
About 100,000 Daimler employees in Germany are eligible to opt-in to a new program called Mail on Holiday, according to The Atlantic. When the workers go on vacation, they can switch it on, and the service auto-deletes all of their incoming email. "Our employees should relax on holiday and not read work-related emails," said Wilfried Porth, board member for human resources, to The Financial Times as cited by The Atlantic.
Mail on Holiday puts a thumb on the scale of work/life balance in favor of a little more free time. The system means that Daimler employees shouldn't even be tempted to check their email on vacation because there's nothing there - and it also avoids them coming back from a relaxing holiday only to find a mailbox packed full of hundreds of unread messages. These days, people are absolutely obsessed with their work, often to the detriment of their health, not to mention spending time with their families and friends. On one hand, Mail on Holiday sounds like the sort of vacation breakthrough we'd need to truly unplug and unwind, but on the other hand, it makes our skin crawl just thinking about the lack of communication. Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG is Affalterbach's first big leap into the little pond

Tue, 05 Mar 2013

The recent history of AMG is turning out amped-up versions of Mercedes-Benz offerings that would hardly ever be mistaken for their sedate counterparts. Sure, you'd need to pay attention to pick a G-Class from the G63 AMG, but dual side-pipes are a quick giveaway. The Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG is not only a new era in Affalterbach's attention on smaller cars, it is probably also the most subtle transformation we can think of in the line-up.
Low and chunky enough in standard guise to make a sporting impression, the aesthetic makeover is confined to black trim around the lower rim of the hatch, black wheels with red brake calipers and a single, rectangular exhaust tip on either side of the diffuser. It's easier to make a positive ID inside, where the flat-bottomed steering wheel, red seatbelts and red-rimmed details say, "You know what I am..."
If the car is running, though, it won't take but a second. The 2.0-liter turbo spitting 360 horsepower and 332 pound-feet will grumble through a sport exhaust at idle, and bellow through the same on it's way to a 0-60 time of less than 4.5 seconds. And if you need something that looks a little harder - and you want those quad pipes - then the A45 AMG Edition 1 is the treasure you seek. There's a press release below for all the info you'll need until the hot hatch goes on sale in Germany later this year, and photos for the rest of us while we wait to find out if we'll get a chance to buy it.

Consumer Reports selling its road-tested roadsters [w/video]

Thu, 31 Jan 2013

Here's a chance to acquire a celebrity-owned vehicles, and this time at a discount instead of a premium. So the celebrity in this case is Consumer Reports, that magazine that could be equally adored and abhored by car enthusiasts. CR buys all of its test vehicles and usually finds willing second owners within its own ranks, but its opening its small used-car lot to the public. On the forecourt are four roadsters: an automatic 2012 Audi TT 2.0 TFSI Quattro S-Tronic with 6,600 miles for $36,500, a manual 2012 BMW Z4 sDrive28i with 8,400 miles for $45,000, a manual 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK250 for $39,500 and a manual 2013 Porsche Boxster with 7,000 miles for $48,000.
Those numbers mean a savings of $9,000 to $10,000 before haggling - each car is listed with an "Asking price" so there could be some wiggle room if you show up with pockets full of dough and eyes full of serious intent. Since the money CR earns from the sales go back into the magazine's budget to buy more test cars, however, it probably won't take any oddball trades, so you can forget about getting any purchasing help from that track-day AMC Javelin project on blocks in the back yard.
The vehicles have been taken care of and spiffed up for sale; buyers will take delivery at the CR test track in East Haddam, Connecticut and get a tour of the facilities. While you're there they'll even take you on a lap around the track so you can feel how your car handles when driven by one of its testers. They will probably not help you with advice on which toaster and dehumidifier to buy - you'll still need to get a subscription for that. Have a look at the video below to see a day in the life of a CR test car.
