Up for your consideration is an very-good to excellent condition 1991 Mercedes-Benz 560 SEL.  This vehicle is being offered by its second owners.  They purchased it from a certified pre-owned Mercedes-Benz dealer late in the summer of 1998.  A cherished daily driver, the second owner maintained this car very, very well.  All service history is documented with a stack of service receipts totaling nearly $25,000 over the last 15+ years.   All oil changes,  maintenance and repairs were done by certified Mercedes-Benz technicians.   In 2011, the second owner passed away and this vehicle was put in to a climate-controlled storage facility, where it was properly looked after.  The battery was maintained, fuel was stabilized and it was  regularly started and run to maintain the vehicle's integrity. The car's exterior and interior were also periodically cleaned and refurbished as necessary.  In January of this year, storage of this vehicle became no longer available and the family of the second owner has decided to sell it.  The 1991 Mercedes 560 SEL was the last of the 126-series chassis.  It represented luxury at its finest in 1991 and this behemoth represents perhaps the last of the great "touring" cars produced by Mercedes-Benz.  Aesthetically, the design is pure, classic Mercedes-Benz.  These models are quickly appreciating on this basis and this particular car provides and excellent opportunity to own a classic.   Technically, the performance of the 560 could be described as smooth, powerful, and quiet.  As a fully-optioned vehicle in 1991 this car features adjustable front and rear power seats,  power telescopic steering wheel, sun-roof,  two-way heated front and rear seats, power self-leveling hydraulic shocks,  Becker audio system with a 10-disc CD changer mounted in the trunk.  Power windows and locks.  Rear passenger reading lamps.  This is the ultimate car for long-trips!  All features appear to work on this vehicle, including the power antenna.  The air-conditioning and climate control systems are also working quite well.  The current Toyo tires have approximately  7,000 miles on them.  Brakes function well with anti-lock system fully functional. Self-leveling hydraulic suspension also full engages when gear selector is changed from "Park" to "Drive" and vice-versa.    Body-wise the car is very good.  The original paint is good, but may benefit from an intense buff and wax to really bring out the shine.   Chrome is excellent.  Panels and all apertures are tight.  Body has a few minor "dings" commensurate with he age of the car and use. Nothing major here.   The only rust is two small spots where the front bumper attaches to the body on each side. This is not a serious issue but it should be noted.   All power locks are properly aligned, lubricated and central locking system is operational.  The interior is very good, with minor creasing and some surface cracks on the diver and front passenger seats and central arm rest.  The rear passenger seats are in excellent condition.   All the hides are in supple condition with no splits, or deep fissures requiring repair.  Carpet pile is deep and and in good shape with no serious stains or wear.  The car rides beautifully, with full power and good braking.  Transmission shifts smoothly and quietly.  The vehicle is sold "as-is", "where is".  No warranty or guarantees offered or implied.  Car has a clear title.  Taxes, delivery, registration, and title are the responsibility of the buyer.  A $500 deposit is due with 48-hours of the winning bid or offer.  We expect the car to be paid for in total in 7 calendar days after that time, unless alternate arrangements have been made. We will assist in shipping but all arrangements are at the buyer's expense.  We will not transfer title until purchase is paid in full.  Wire transfer, certified check only.  All funds must be in US-Dollars.  Please do not offer any trades.  Seller reserves the right to end this auction early as this car is being offered for sale locally.  Car can be seen and driven by appointment only.  Feel free to order an inspection PRIOR to your bid or offer.  This is not a contingent sale.  All sales final. I will be happy to answer any questions to the best of my ability in a timely manner.  I can take further photos if you require and may post more if it ever stops snowing!  All reasonable offers considered. Clean CARFAX report is available.

Maybach lost upwards of $500k on each vehicle sold

Wed, 08 Feb 2012

Daimler is shuttering Maybach in 2013 after seven years of production. In that time, the company's ultra-ultra-luxury arm managed to sell just 3,000 units, and CAR reports Daimler lost somewhere around $500,000 on each and every one of them.
Even with a ludicrous price tag of over $370,000 for an "entry" Maybach 57, the brand couldn't quite recoup the dizzying $1.33 billion Daimler poured into it since its (re)inception. Rumors ignited over a possible tie up with Aston Martin that would have resulted in a range of new and attractive models, but Daimler has instead decided to snuff out Maybach altogether.
We can hardly blame them.

Watch Schumacher's hot lap of N"urburgring in Mercedes F1 car

Fri, 31 May 2013

In advance of the Nürburgring 24-hour race last weekend, Mercedes-Benz put on a demonstration that had Michael Schumacher playing catch-up in a Formula One car against four examples of AMG metal. There were four cars sent off in staggered starts before Schumacher: an A45 AMG, E63 AMG 4Matic, SLS AMG Black Series, and an SLS AMG GT3 car. "Mr. Formula One," as the German television commentators call him, left three minutes after the SLS AMG GT3.
There are two videos of Schumacher's lap, the first is on-board footage - and even though there were several GoPros on the car the POV never cuts away from the front wing. You can hear the throttle and tell he's not pushing it, you can also tell how bumpy the track is. The second video is footage from the German Sport1 channel - with commentary in German - that shows all the cars taking off and takes the aerial view of proceedings. He looks to be going a lot faster in that one. You can compare and contrast yourself with the videos below.
Oh, and it's worth noting that, even with the likely restricted car, and the made-for-TV environment, Schumi turned in a quick lap. The nose camera shows the F1 car start to slow down on the back straight, near the start/finish line, right around the modern-length track record time of six minutes and eleven seconds.

Paul di Resta returns to DTM with Mercedes

Tue, 21 Jan 2014

Some drivers manage to make the transition from one form of motor racing into another, and some run into trouble. Take Paul di Resta, for example. The promising young Scottish driver dominated Formula 3 racing in Europe in 2006, then moved over to Germany's hugely competitive DTM touring car series where he finished second in 2008, third in 2009 and first in 2010. But things didn't go as smoothly for Paul - cousin to retired Indy champion Dario Franchitti - when he moved in to Formula One with the Force India team.
In three years on the grid, he failed to score a single podium finish. Little surprise, then, that Force India opted not to renew his contract for this season. Left without a ride, di Resta is now going back to DTM with longtime supporter Mercedes-Benz, testing the new C-Class touring car today in Portugal. It's good news for Mercedes, which is celebrating 120 years in motor racing this season and, with 2005 champion Gary Paffett also on board, can now count two former champions on its DTM roster.
We wouldn't count Paul out of F1 for good, though. When he won the DTM title four years ago, he was also moonlighting as Force India's test driver, and we wouldn't be surprised to see him pull similar double-duty with the Mercedes F1 team (or another Benz-powered outfit) this year before spring-boarding back into grand prix racing in the future. At 27 years old, he may not have been the youngest driver on the grid this year, but he's still got a good few years ahead of him.
