I am the second owner of this vehicle and have owned it since April of 2007. I bought it from the owner's agent and was told that they were an elderly couple. They were from New Jersey and the car was shipped to Florida in winters. They apparently didn't drive very much as indicated by the mileage.

I was driving it last in June of 2009 and it has been been covered and kept in my garage since I owned it. I take it for a drive around town every weekend to keep it running right. It had 73K miles when I purchased it. The car is much too nice to have sitting when someone could be enjoying it.

I am retired and selling my home to go the RV route, so the car just won't fit into 'the plan'. It is hard to describe it's great condition, both in and out and mechanically. Smooth and quite ride with the feel of a real automobile. I know I will regret selling later.

The paint has two minor flaws, which have been brush touched. A small scratch above the drivers door handle, which has been brush touched and a very small paint scratch at the rear antenna mount.  You actually have to be looking to spot these blems. I would say about 2 hours paint work would take care of this. As far as I can see, this car has not had any previous paint or body work. Interior is positively like new, and indicates that this has been a non-smoker's car. Still has the 'new' Mercedes smell.

Mercedes Chrome Wheels and like new Michelin Tires add to the eye appeal. Chrome mirrors and wheel opening mouldings.

All belts and hoses are new. Water pump was getting a little noisy, so that has been replaced with a new, not rebuilt pump.

As far as the info that I have looked up, the car was sold for around  $56,000.00 when it was new. That was a bunch of money in 1985!

There are many more years of fine motoring for the right buyer. Compare to any new vehicles on the road today. This car was built when 'Quality' was more than just a word! MSRP was about 56K, back in 1985. That was and still is a lotof money!

Clark Gable's 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing doesn't sell, then does sell for $1.85 million [UPDATE: w/video]

Sat, 19 Jan 2013

How much extra value does previous celebrity ownership add to of a car? Really, there's no way to know until the car in question hits the auction block and bidders start raising their hands. In the case of the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing you see above, the celebrity owner is none other than Clark Gable, who purchased it new. After Gable's death in 1960, the car changed hands a few times before settling with Charles Wood in 1975.
A high-dollar restoration was performed in 1989, and period accessories added by Gable himself were kept in place, including the Rudge knock-off wheels and Nardi steering wheel. Any Mercedes-Benz 300SL is worth a big chunk of money. In the case of Clark Gable's old Gullwing, the bidding stalled at $1.9 million here at the 2013 Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale. As one of the 5000-series cars, this 300SL carried a reserve, and a bit of after-the-fact dealmaking saw the car change hands for $1.85 million.

AMG-powered Aston Martins still years away

Mon, 16 Sep 2013

After flirting for several years, Mercedes-Benz and Aston Martin have finally tied the knot. Just don't expect to see any offspring to result from the union for at least three or four years.
This according to Auto Express, which spoke with Daimler chief Dr. Dieter Zetsche at the Frankfurt Motor Show last week. AE reports that a new range of AMG-developed turbocharged V8s, transmissions and electrical components will make their way into the successors to the current V8 Vantage and DB9, but that these models are still a few years off.
Purists might balk at the thought of a Mercedes-powered Aston holding true to the brand's heritage. But while David Brown (for whom the DB range is named) may have steered clear of shoehorning in Detroit muscle into his cars, the entirety of the company's current range is powered by engines borrowing technology from Ford, and that arrangement seems to have worked well for Aston until now. And if you're still skeptical, look no further than Pagani and its AMG-sourced engines and you should have all the proof you need that the new relationship between Daimler and Aston could be a success.

Maybach could become Mercedes-Benz sub-brand

Wed, 22 Jun 2011

When you're arriving in a twin-turbocharged, twelve-cylinder Maybach limo, there's no reason you should ever have to be late. Except, maybe, to make a fashionable entrance. But up at the corporate level, the entire Maybach brand is being slowed down as critical decisions about its future are being undertaken.
Last week, we reported that a decision on what path Maybach would take going forward would be due at the start of next month, but the latest reports indicate that the timeframe has been extended as further options are being considered.
The previous options under consideration were twofold: either relaunch the brand with production outsourced to Aston Martin - which suddenly finds itself with excess production capacity - or shut it down completely. And those are still two very real options. Word has it that Aston has put together four concept cars for the Daimler brass to consider, all based on the next-generation S-Class platform (and thankfully not the old one).
