1973 Mercedes Benz 450sl - Direct German Order Vehicle on 2040-cars
Renton, Washington, United States
I picked up the car from the daughter of the original
owner. It was in storage since
2009. I don’t know the entire history
but she said it was a direct German order. The VIN number is a European number same with
the paint color. Short European bumpers, no vertical bumper pieces that you
would see on American cars of this vintage, cutouts for the European license
plate in the front. Euro headlights. I believe the
wheels are not original ’73 wheels. The paint is original color code and initially I thought it
was factory paint but upon closer inspection determined that car was re-painted
some time ago. Definitely not a recent
paint job but a high-end one that’s for sure, proper shine and no orange peel. The leather piece on top of the converteble top cover is alligator
skin. Also the back wall of the trunk is
leather, which is not typically seen on these cars. It is a 41 year old vehicle but the condition of the car inside
and out is amazing; in the 95% range.
Mechanically it is perfect. It
did have a few items to take care of before selling it mainly due to the fact
that it was parked for 5 years but most of the fixes were done so that the new
owner can truly enjoy it the way it should be enjoyed. Here is a list of all that was done to it:
-
motor oil Brad Penn green oil -
Fuchs Titan power
steering fluid -
Fuchs Titan ATF 3353
transmission fluid and filter -
coolant -
Super Dot 4 Pentosin
brake fluid -
Differential oil Valvoline 80-90W
-
New rubber break hoses at all 4 wheels -
New front brake pads, caliper seals and caliper dust
caps (rear brakes were in good working condition)
-
Fuel injectors serviced and cleaned (out of the
car) -
New fuel injector seals and grommets that secure
injectors to the heads -
New fuel injector hoses (rail to injectors) -
New cap, rotor, and points (wires were in good
condition) – engine timed to spec -
New belts (PWS, alternator, water pump, AC) -
New oil and air filter -
Replaced leaky vacuum hoses and hose connections
(this goes for interior and door vacuum lines as well) -
New heater core vacuum valve on the firewall -
Blower fan housing cleaned and cover re-sealed -
Gas tank completely drained of any old fuel. -
Rubber fuel lines replaced and all hose clamps checked
for tightness throughout (this includes the gas lines under the car as they
come out of the tank, in the trunk behind the trunk wall cover, and in the
engine compartment) -
New thermostat and O-ring
-
New pitman arm seal -
New power steering reservoir O-rings -
New tie rods -
New front wheel bearings -
Four wheel alignment -
New tires -
New rear differential (came from a donor
car). The differential was thoroughly
cleaned and inspected by the shop before purchased and installed in the
car. Cleaning included the breather
valve on top of differential that is crucial to the longevity of the differential. -
New half shaft (driver side only, the passenger
side was very solid) -
New front shocks
-
Carpets and seats are original condition. -
New high-tech sound and moisture barriers with heat
shield material (see pics). Even if you
get caught in rain water will never get through it. -
Replaced all dash instrument and headlight bulbs -
All gauges except the clock work. -
Inspected all vacuum hoses under the dash and
behind the center console for air leaks and tightened any loose or
about-to-come loose connections. The
vacuum operated outside air flaps and air selector switch work perfectly. -
Serviced the fan speed switch -
New stereo and speakers – automatic antenna
works as well. -
New wiper blades and windshield washer & floor
switch are working great -
Original floor jack and what looks like original
full size spare tire -
New trunk carpet and trunk lid seal -
New door seals and door window seals -
New moisture barriers between doors and door
panels
-
Sold with hardtop and factory hard top rack - New HAARTZ Material convertible top professionally installed - new webbings & elastics, front bow re-wrapped, frame cleaned, new rear window cable. 5 year parts and labor warranty. -
No dents or rust, exceptionally straight body. Paint has a couple of minor blemishes from
being in storage but nothing that would take away from the attractiveness of
this vehicle. As you can see on the
pictures the paint has a proper shine and quality. -
Some surface rust was in the trunk but it was
properly treated. -
All water drainage channels were thoroughly
cleaned and blown through with compressed air.
Important for proper water drainage. -
The trunk lock is missing For more information please call 206-571-5630. I can send additional pictures upon request. |

Mercedes leads in US luxury car thefts
Wed, 31 Jul 2013Mercedes-Benz makes some fine automobiles. The Silver Arrow'd cars are so good, apparently, that thieves can't help but try to steal them. The German brand is at the top of the charts for luxury car thefts in the US, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, with New York City leading the way. (And those New Yorkers complain about Detroit being bad!)
The C-Class was the most stolen model, with 485 ganked between 2009 and 2012 in NYC alone, while the E-Class and S-Class (which also boasted the worst recovery rate, at 59 percent) both finished in the top ten. Following the C-Class was the BMW 3 Series and Infiniti G. Not surprisingly, each of these were the most common models in their respective lineups. Los Angeles and Miami are also prime hotspots for luxury car thefts, according to the Detroit News report.
While getting your car stolen is pretty awful, there was one inspiring statistic compiled by the NICB - the average recovery rate across the board was 84 percent, with the Cadillac CTS getting recovered 91 percent of the time.
Aston Martin signs Letter of Intent for technical partnership with AMG
Thu, 25 Jul 2013A little over two months ago came reports that Daimler and Aston Martin were in talks, again, about "supply and technical-cooperation agreements." The next step has been taken with Aston Martin announcing that it has signed a Letter of Intent that looks "towards a technical partnership" with Mercedes-AMG GmbH, and the two companies aiming to have definitive agreements done by year's end.
While it will get to use certain electric and electronic components from AMG, the true golden egg for the maker of the Vanquish will be the ability to develop a new line of "bespoke V8 powertrains" that will be fitted to "a new generation of models." In return for opening up the larder, Daimler will get a non-voting stake of up to five percent of Aston Martin.
Nothing else is being said about the tie-up for the moment, but there's a press release below with a few more details.
Maybach lost upwards of $500k on each vehicle sold
Wed, 08 Feb 2012Daimler is shuttering Maybach in 2013 after seven years of production. In that time, the company's ultra-ultra-luxury arm managed to sell just 3,000 units, and CAR reports Daimler lost somewhere around $500,000 on each and every one of them.
Even with a ludicrous price tag of over $370,000 for an "entry" Maybach 57, the brand couldn't quite recoup the dizzying $1.33 billion Daimler poured into it since its (re)inception. Rumors ignited over a possible tie up with Aston Martin that would have resulted in a range of new and attractive models, but Daimler has instead decided to snuff out Maybach altogether.
We can hardly blame them.
