1984 Mercedes 380SE Euro with AMG add-ons. 96,100 original miles, car is in wonderful original condition. Always garaged - the previous owner had the car for the last 21 years and spared no expense in maintenance and upkeep. The car has now just over 96,000 miles; since 1992, he put about 1,700 miles per year on the car, driving it only on special occasions.

NOTE - the VIN listed by Ebay is incorrect as I can't get it to recognize a Euro VIN. The actual VIN is WDB1260321A099516.

I have records for the car going back to 1987, when it was legally imported and modified. It arrived in the US on May 17, 1987, traveling on the M/S Pacific Breeze from Bremerhaven to Houston. The original owner paid over $6,000 for DOT modifications, customs brokers and fees, and initial registration. (That's $12,100+ in today's dollars.) Major recent services include:

95,800 miles: new Bosch fuel distributor, Bosch fuel accumulator, and transmission modulator $750
94,340 miles: new calipers, brakes, sensors, brake flush $905
93,481 miles: new cats to pass emissions $730
90,085 miles: front end overhaul, including drag link, idler bushing, control arm and strut guide bushings, tie rods, new hood pad, radiator hoses, 90,000 mile service, trans filter and service, alignment, etc. $2,540
89,670 miles: brake service, coolant flush, new expansion tank, oil change $364
86,230 miles: R&R transmission, reseal rear main, R&R injectors and fuel accumulator, new starter, trans service $1,463
85,826 miles: new exhaust, trans reseal, crankshaft seal $2,307
78,578 miles: timing chain replacement, new cats $1,720
Lots of oil and filter changes spread throughout here as well, sometimes with only 400-500 miles between changes.

The car does not leak anything. It has passed emissions here in Maricopa county (Phoenix) for the last 20+ years, although a few times it has required an "emissions tune" (leaning out the fuel) which any MB mechanic or shade-tree diy-er can do, and un-do, in about an hour.

Everything on the inside works except the clock, which has decided to keep its own time. This includes windows (all 4 power, not just the front), sunroof, cold AC, heat, cruise control, power driver's seat, fog lights, ABS, even the power lumbar support which is adjustable by a dial on the side of the seat, as well as the adjustable Euro headlights (3 positions up and down.)  The wood trim is mostly very nice, with a few of the normal cracks and de-lamination as shown in the photos.

The paint is original and has a nice shine overall, with a few chips and dings noticeable if you look hard.  No rust. The car rides on lowered AMG springs and shocks and has a firm but not harsh ride. Even with the 205/70 14 tires, it feels very solid, comfortable, and safe. Unfortunately, the 16" AMG Pentas were sold 8 years ago. Also missing is the fabulous AMG front spoiler, which, as you can tell by the photos, suffered a few too many parking incidents. (If the car does not sell, I will put an aftermarket front spoiler on. All you W126 guys - feel free to send me your recommendations for the best front air dam out there to install.)

I'm sure I've missed a few details so please contact me for questions or to just talk about the old sedans. Remember, it is not perfect - it's a 29 year old car.  I'm hoping she goes to a MB enthusiast who will give her a great home.

Thanks, Jeff

Carlsson SLK 340 Judd is winged up for hill climb glory

Wed, 06 Mar 2013

Carlsson has been expertly tuning Mercedes-Benz products for more than 20 years now, but we can't say as we remember the outfit turning out anything quite so racy as this SLK 340 Judd that it has brought along to the Geneva Motor Show this year.
This SLK is meant for competition, obviously, and Carlsson has already booked the car to race in several hill climb events in the E1 category. The purpose-built racer should have a fighting chance to do well in said races, with a shape vetted in wind tunnel testing for maximum downforce, the SLK uses a carbon-fiber bodyshell to help achieve a curb weight of just about 1,720 pounds.
The featherweight SLK's name comes from its 3.4-liter V8 engine, which churns out a wicked 610 horsepower to go with its 317 pound-feet of torque. A Hewland transmission with paddle shift operation manages all of the thrust.

Maybach and Aston Martin alliance talks fall apart

Tue, 27 Sep 2011

If you have, like us, been salivating at the notion of a new generation of Maybach and Lagonda ultra-luxury crafts built by Aston Martin, we've got some bad news: According to reports emanating from Germany, talks between AML and Daimler have broken down.
The proposal under negotiation would have seen Daimler outsourcing production of the next family of Maybach models to Aston Martin, which in return would benefit from Mercedes-Benz platforms and engines - not only for its svelte GTs, but also for its own future Lagonda line of limousines and luxury SUVs. That, and a boatload of money - or at least that's what AML was reportedly seeking, an issue that served as the stumbling block over which the deal reportedly collapsed.
That's not to say the two parties couldn't still reach some sort of a compromise, but short of that, Daimler may opt to either shut down Maybach altogether, find another partner, or take another stab at building new models internally.

Maybach lost upwards of $500k on each vehicle sold

Wed, 08 Feb 2012

Daimler is shuttering Maybach in 2013 after seven years of production. In that time, the company's ultra-ultra-luxury arm managed to sell just 3,000 units, and CAR reports Daimler lost somewhere around $500,000 on each and every one of them.
Even with a ludicrous price tag of over $370,000 for an "entry" Maybach 57, the brand couldn't quite recoup the dizzying $1.33 billion Daimler poured into it since its (re)inception. Rumors ignited over a possible tie up with Aston Martin that would have resulted in a range of new and attractive models, but Daimler has instead decided to snuff out Maybach altogether.
We can hardly blame them.
