Tires and brakes less than 4k miles wear. Newer A/C and OEM muffler."

This car is in great condition and I would not hesitate to use it as a daily driver or take it across country. It has been garage-kept for at least the last 10 years here in Arizona. I have service records for the car going back 10 years, although I have owned it for only 4 months. In 2004 the car was in some kind of accident, according to AutoCheck. I have a receipt from around that time indicating that a body part was replaced and an alignment was done. The car has been recently completely inspected by MB Motors in Phoenix, who anyone in the area will tell you is a very respected and reputable MB mechanic. They did not uncover any issues besides the list of small buggers that all older cars have.

Highlights:
  • 120,540 miles
  • Strong, clean engine starts and runs perfectly.
  • Cold A/C, was completely replaced 6/2011.
  • Tires and brakes have about 4k miles on them.
  • Center and rear muffler were completely replaced with OEM parts 12/2011.
  • Interior is in very good condition. The carpet has a few stains here and there that should be easy to steam clean. The wood console has a few cracks. The MB-Tex (leather-like material) is in very good condition. I bought new color-matched OEM floor mats for the car 3 months ago.
  • The exterior is in very good condition with NO rust. At some point the previous owner had it clear-coated; this is blistering in a few small areas around the car. It's not noticeable from more than a couple feet away.
  • Aftermarket stereo with CD player.

As you would expect, there are a number of small things that need repair or attention, none of which affect the drivability of the car. I can give more detail but here are the items most worth mentioning:
  • The transmission shifts a bit roughly when cold. After 5-10 minutes, normal.
  • There is a minuscule oil leak somewhere in the engine compartment. It has dripped probably a total of a tablespoon of oil in the last 4 months. The MB shop said it was common and nothing to worry about.
  • The power door locks don't work. That part of the vacuum system is disconnected in the engine bay, probably because the previous owner didn't want to pay to investigate/fix the problem.
  • The tach works... sometimes.
  • The antenna mast is cracked so it flops around when you raise it, so I just leave it down. Picks up radio stations fine.
  • The moonroof motor moves a bit slowly when shutting it. Not sure if this is a sign of the motor dying eventually, but it opens and shuts just fine.

Firing of M-B boss upheld

Mon, 15 Jul 2013

Ernst Lieb, the disgraced former CEO of American operations for Mercedes-Benz, will not be getting any more money from the Silver Arrow'd teat. His wrongful dismissal suit against MB's parent company, Daimler, was tossed out of a German appeals panel. This, followed the initial rejection by a lower court last year.
According to court documents acquired by Automotive News, Lieb was found to have "accepted payments of substantial value to which he - as he was aware - had no claim."
Lieb took over American operations from former CEO Paul Halata in September of 2006. Reports surfaced in October of 2011 that Lieb was dismissed from his posting at MB, with a variety of rumors swirling. Eventually, news broke that financial wrong doing was responsible for the German's firing.

2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series [w/video]

Fri, 15 Nov 2013

The biggest misconception about the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series is that it's simply a higher-performing version of the SLS GT - a closer look, or better yet, a few hot laps on a high-speed racing circuit, reveals that is anything but the case.
Launched in the States in mid-2011, the standard SLS GT is a 583-horsepower, all-aluminum, gull-wing coupe with performance that positions it near the top of the exotic segment. While the AMG team at Mercedes-Benz could have left it alone, their experience with the SLS AMG GT3 race car said there was room for improvement, so they devised the SLS Black Series. The transformation from SLS GT to SLS Black Series is extensive, with no fewer than 17 different significant enhancements.
The engine mapping, crankshaft, connecting rods, valve-train, intake, exhaust and cooling are all modified and the engine's redline bumps up from 7,200 to 8,000 rpm, which pushes output of the hand-built 6.3-liter V8 to 622 horsepower. The power steering receives a new ratio, a coil-over AMG Adaptive Performance suspension is installed along with underbody braces, the track is widened, two-piece carbon-ceramic brakes replace iron rotors at each corner and a lightweight titanium exhaust is fitted beneath. The AMG Speedshift seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox is modified and an electronically controlled AMG rear differential lock ensures the power goes to the pavement. Last on the mechanical upgrades are new lightweight forged wheels (10x19 inches front and 12x20 inches rear) wrapped in special R-compound Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires.

Next Mercedes S-Class stretching into this 600 Pullman limo

Fri, 15 Mar 2013

To the concern of nobody in particular, Mercedes-Benz will not be re-upping its Maybach line of ultra-luxury limousines. No, instead the German automaker will be stretching its already roomy S-Class, to make this upcoming 600 Pullman version of the decked-out beast.
The car in our new gallery of spy shots is sporting beefy B-pillars and a massive set of rear doors that should allow perfectly graceful ingress and egress from what is likely to be a palatial rear space. (In one photo we can even see a long-wheelbase S-Class in line with the new Pullman, handily exhibiting the size of the new variant.) The exterior modifications are otherwise obscured, though we can guess at revised front and rear fascia and lighting elements, based on both end being heavily taped for these test runs.
It's a good bet that the Pullman will make use of M-B's twin-turbocharged V12 engine, though sources indicate that a hybrid version might eventually be in the offing, as well.
