Up for auction is "Miss Daisy."  She is a terrific example of one of Mercedes most beautiful and dependable cars ever.  These old Mercedes are tanks...very durable and well made back when they really meant it when they said, "The best or nothing."  And very fun to drive.  I get compliments wherever I go in it.

I've owned it for a little over 12 years and have driven in about 7,000 miles with no issues.  I change the oil every year regardless of mileage, and have only had to service the brakes (new pads) and put new belts on it.  This engine is legendary and has many many years and miles ahead of it.

The good:
Runs, shifts, drives wonderfully
Most of the body is in excellent condition...floor pans, jack holes, trunk, all rust free and solid as a rock.  Exceptions are noted below.
Most of the interior is in excellent condition.
The air conditioning still blows cold, but only on the high fan setting.
The brakes pads are almost new.
The vacuum door locks, lights, wipers, turn signals all work fine.

The not so good:
The tires have plenty of tread on them, but they are older tires and probably need to be replaced.
There is one small spot of rust as shown behind the passenger side rear wheel.
There are some small, minor marks on the driver's side C pillar.  They look like some sort of paint.  Might be able to rub them off.
The exhaust system is original and I've patched it a few times.  It will probably need to be replaced in the next year or so.
The glow plug pull knob is missing.  I've replaced it with a large washer that works fine.
There is one small crack in the middle of the dash.  It lines up with the radio speaker so it's not readily noticeable.
The clock doesn't work.
There are some minor tears in the headliner in the rear corners and one on the side of the passenger seat.  The headliner does not sag. The passenger seat also has a very very small rip.
The front right exterior corner marker doesn't work.  I haven't chased that down but it's a minor fix.
The fuel gauge is funky.  The sender probably needs to be cleaned.  Again, an easy job I just haven't gotten to.

And, as you would expect in an almost 40 year old original car, there are some minor nicks and dents here and there that wouldn't show up in photos.  Very minor, but I always tell it like it is.

This is a wonderful car that I've driven to Mercedes events and it always draws a crowd.  With a car like this, there are always things to tinker with which is half the fun of ownership.  If you are the successful bidder, I would encourage you to join the Mercedes Club of America and at least one of the excellent Mercedes forums out there.  I have owned many Mercedes over the years and have found the club and the forums invaluable.  This car was the first Mercedes I ever bought, so it holds a special place.  But I am downsizing, so it has to go.

If you need additional photos (serious bidders please) or have any questions, let me know.  Good luck and happy bidding!

Is Audi getting complacent and suffering from brain drain?

Wed, 27 Nov 2013

The argument is made in a Reuters article: Audi is falling behind other luxury brands, such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW, due to a lack of research-and-development spending and "brain drain," or the migration of top executives and R&D chiefs to other parts of the Volkswagen Group. Reuters notes that Audi's current R&D chief is the third in 16 months.
Audi, which contributed to 40 percent of VW Group's $11.6 billion in profit the first nine months of the year, is delivering cars at a record pace: 1.31 million were delivered from January to October 2013 versus BMW's 1.35 million. Yet Audi, Reuters reports, doesn't have a halo car akin to BMW's new electrified i3 and i8 or an answer to Mercedes' plug-in-hybrid S-Class, and the R&D spending at Audi is less than BMW and Mercedes by a fair margin. It's noted in the article, however, that Audi benefits from other R&D spending within VW Group.
Reuters mentions that BMW "trumpets its new 'i' series" and the new Mercedes CLA and GLA ranges are winning "rave reviews" as part of its argument that Audi's recent lack of technological innovation could hurt future sales. Those cars do pack tons of new technology, some of which are firsts for mainstream production cars. But last time we checked, the i3 could be causing BMW's stock to slide, the CLA isn't receiving the rave reviews that Reuters would have you believe and the GLA hasn't been reviewed yet.

EVO "2012 Car of the Year: The Track Battles" is a sports car salmagundi

Sun, 25 Nov 2012

EVO has come out with another gotta-watch-it video, throwing its 2012 Car of the Year contestants around the UK's 1.5-mile Blyton Park track. It's actually a 15-minute teaser for the full-length DVD detailing the magazine's Car of the Year selection, but the tease is worth every penny free second.
Tiff Needell and sports car racer Richard Meaden handle the wheel duties, the two driving five pairs of sports cars: Lotus Exige S vs. Porsche Boxster S, Morgan Three-Wheeler vs. Toyota GT86, BMW M135i vs. Porsche 911, Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series vs. Alpina B3 GT3, the marquee event pits the McLaren MP4-12C vs. the Pagani Huayra. After a head-to-head lap with commentary during drifts, Meaden takes each car out to set a representative lap time.
You'll find the verdicts, lots of tire smoke, and lines like "Anything you can do sideways I can do sideways" in the video below.

Mercedes making aggressive plans for Chinese market

Wed, 28 Aug 2013

Mercedes-Benz is preparing a major product offensive to counteract lagging sales in the Chinese market, aiming 20 new or updated models at the People's Republic in the next two years, according to a report by Reuters. The plan is part of MB's so-called 2020 Initiative, which will see the Stuttgart-based manufacturer dump 2 billion Euros ($2.67 billion) into its Chinese market vehicles in a bid to boost sales to 300,000 units by 2015.
Were it to succeed, China would become the largest market for the Silver Arrow, outpacing Germany and the United States. Leading the charge will be the redesigned E-Class, which is set to launch in China this week. That will quickly be followed by the S-Class, and eventually by the GLA-Class in 2014.
Mercedes has struggled in China, especially relative to its German competition, BMW and Audi. Where Mercedes saw a mere four-percent increase in 2012 sales to 206,150 units, Audi was up a staggering 32 percent, while BMW's numbers jumped 41 percent. While some voices, according to Reuters, accuse Munich and Ingolstadt of boosting their numbers through hefty incentives, the fact remains that Mercedes was just walloped by its competitors last year.
