This particular 43 year old classic low grill coupe is a wonderful example of automotive geniuses at Mercedes at their finest as they came near the end of the 10 year run of this chassis was built. She is a 1970 model 3.5 coupe (emblem tab broken) with the most desirable floor shift,"Behr" a/c, and now refitted tastefully showing the outstanding original design and use of fresh leathers perfectly fitted that will fill your nose with the aroma of the new Palomino hides. As most would agree, the obvious beauty that catches anyones eye is the classic smooth and flowing lines. This low milage car has only been driven approximately 2400 miles per/year. The story of the 111 pillar-less coupe was retold to me by a Mercedes Benz USA trainer when at the headquarters of MBUSA in Montvale New Jersey. This remarkable vehicle chassis started its beginning when the designer -engineer Paul Bracq, designed it on a napkin. He was stuck by the simplicity of the arches of a famous bridge and he chose to recreate the simplicity of the line in the arch in the long simple curve of the roofline of the 111 chassis. Beautifully designed, his imagination gave birth to a vehicle automotive connoisseurs have admired for almost half a century. Clearly the coupe's sister vehicle the cabriolet,... has been easily appreciated by all, even revered. It long ago won a place among many an enthusiast. The general finery and quality of the 111 reflected the Mercedes-Benz nameplate it bore quite well and fetches quite often deeply into six figure$ in the marketplace for some time now. As convertibles usually are, they were always seen...while the coupes were just not as loudly "heard" till of late. The coupe version of the 111 chassis actually embodied Bracq's vision more purely all along. Now it appears the coupe is finally just now just beginning to experiencing its long overdue recognition and respect in the marketplace. Still affordable and very drivable, there were only 3270 of the coupes ever built. Some were either left to fade into time or even some converted into cabriolets. This vehicle represents some of the last hand built vehicles Mercedes ever built and the quality of that built is beyond reproach and has been proven many times over. Being the only affordable luxury 5-seat sedan for many decades it earned its prominence and still commands its place at the front of the valet line. Back in the day, only the super luxuries Rolls and Bentley were stiff competition. But as super-luxuries normally do, their value may rapidly declined and today is ironically challenged or most often static in comparison to the meteoric rise in value of the 111 coupe's and cabriolets.
I tried to compile a partial list of items performed or in need of attention. To be clear, I made a driver not a show car as I have wanted to enjoy the vehicle rain or shine, or just jump in to go with my family without fretting over every detail. She was abit dirty when first encountered but very straight, complete, and fully functional approximately 6years ago. Painted approximated 5years ago. All parts are present. Have some books and a partial tool kit.

Russia gives its Olympic medalists new Mercedes
Thu, 27 Feb 2014Russian medalists at the recently concluded Sochi Winter Olympics are being rewarded quite handsomely for their service to the Motherland. In addition to the $120,000 being handed out for each gold medal, the $76,000 being awarded for slivers and $52,000 given to bronze winners, now word has come out that each of Russia's medalists will be gifted a new Mercedes-Benz.
As with the prize amounts, the type of Mercedes offered was based on what sort of medal was won. Gold medalists got a new GL-Class, silver medalists were given an ML and bronze medalists were treated to a GLK. As prices for Mercedes are higher in Russia, the cheapest model, the GLK, was the equivalent of $59,500, according to The Moscow Times. The cars were handed out by Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, pictured above with figure skating medalist Julia Lipnitskaia.
"I was a bit shocked at the car I was given," Anton Shipulin, a member of the gold-medal biathlon relay team, told RIA-Novosti. "Of course I knew what kind of model it would be, but I didn't totally believe it." For athletes not old enough to drive, like 15-year-old Lipnitskaia, their Mercedes will come complete with a driver.
Mercedes FWD platform to last until 2018, convertible and two-seater future uncertain
Mon, 22 Jul 2013Mercedes-Benz seems to be expecting a lot of success from its front-wheel-drive CLA-Class. Automotive News is reporting that the sub-C-Class sedan could grow when its second generation arrives in 2018.
The current FWD platform for MB underpins the CLA, the B-Class, the GLA-Class, and the A-Class. The B-Class will arrive in North America as an EV for spring of 2014, while the production GLA crossover will arrive three to four months after that. The five-door A-Class won't be crossing The Pond. Sad faces all around.
According to AN, another model will be based on the front-drive architecture, but it won't be coming to the US market. Set to arrive next year, rumors are that it'll be a wagon version of the CLA, sort of like the ill-named five-door CLS Shooting Brake that is also a Europe-only item.
Daimler names Bernd Pischetsrieder to supervisory board
Mon, 14 Apr 2014Some executives in the automotive industry stay with one company for their entire careers, while others bounce from one to the other, often leaving their indelible mark on each automaker at which they serve. Bob Lutz is certainly an example of the latter. So is Lee Iacocca, having presided over Ford and later charing the Chrysler board. Carlos Tavares was chief operating officer of Renault before being nominated as chief executive at PSA Peugeot Citroën. But as far as the Germans go, nobody's jumped from the leadership of one automaker to the next quite like Bernd Pischetsrieder - especially now that he's been named to the supervisory board of Mercedes-Benz parent company Daimler.
An engineer by training, Pischetsrieder started his career at BMW in 1973, eventually rising to the office of CEO after twenty years. There he remained until 1999, only to be dismissed after orchestrating BMW's takeover of the Rover Group (of which only the Mini brand remains in the company's portfolio, the other brands having been sold off after his dismissal).
The next year he was named chairman of Volkswagen's Seat brand, and rose to the chairmanship of the entire Volkswagen Group two years later. Despite a largely successful four-year tenure (that gave birth, incidentally, to the Bugatti Veyron), disagreements with supervisory board chairman Ferdinand Piëch saw him leave the helm at VW AG, focusing his attention on the Scania truck division. He's since been touted as a potential chief executive for Opel and for Continental, but neither potential was apparently realized.
