The 2005 Quattroporte marks Maserati's revival under its parent company, Ferrari. With the involvement of Pininfarina (the Michelangelo of automotive sheet metal) another Italian classic arrives - almost.
The engineering team followed Ferrari's existing rear-weight bias formula. By mounting the all-aluminum, 4.2-liter, dual-overhead-cam V8 engine behind the front wheel centerline and integrating the transmission and rear axle, 53% of the Quatroporte's weight rests over the rear. To further handling quickness, aluminum suspension wishbones and hub centers reduce unsprung weight. The rear weight bias also improves steering control and feel. Some reviewers rated the Maserati sedan's steering sensitivity and feedback on par with the best; not surprising, since it shares the same rack with the new Ferrari 612S.
The suspension system also mirrors the car's parentage. The Skyhook active suspension system continuously (within 25 milliseconds) adjusts the shock absorbers to real-time road conditions and throttle and steering inputs. The driver has a sport mode option. One reviewer described the handling as "a mobile suction cup."
Open the hood, and you'll find no plastic coffee-cup covers here. Fire-red crackle-finish cam covers with a sculpted matte-black intake plenum make a visual statement: Italian spoken here. Heidi Klum and Maserati go Beyond the Swimsuit for Sports Illustrated
Sat, 22 Feb 2014When sports and cars come together, the world "super" often comes up - whether it's a high-performance super sports car, a racing series (like Japan's Super GT, Australia's V8 Supercars or Italy's Superstars series), the latest crop of Super Bowl ads from the world's automakers or a supermodel posing with a car in the pages of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue.
This year's edition already saw Lisalla Montenegro cozying up to the new Lexus RC F, but it's not the only pairing to be found between an import luxury performance machine and a swimsuit model. The new 50th anniversary edition of the popular bikini special features a seven-page pictorial titled "Beyond the Swimsuit" shot by Francesco Carrozzini.
The spread features the inimitable Heidi Klum posing beside and inside various Maserati models - including the new Ghibli S Q4, the GranTurismo MC Trofeo race car and the Quattroporte Ermenegildo Zegna concept. Of course it's not the first time we're seeing a leggy blonde stepping out of Modena's finest - a role often taken up by one Jodie Kidd, to say nothing of the rich and beautiful in exotic locales the world over - but it's a pairing of which we'll never grow tired.
This Decepticon-themed Maserati ticketed for imitating a police car

Even though he's driving a Maserati GranTurismo in homage to the Transformer Barricade and it reads "Decepticons" and "To punish and enslave" on the sides - in two places - and a Twitter hashtag for #Halomafia, the police in Braintree, MA, didn't like it.

Maserati Ghibli overtakes Levante, headed for Shanghai?
Wed, 13 Feb 2013While earlier reports indicated that the next Maserati product out of the gate would be the Levante SUV, Motor Trend is now reporting that the Audi A7-shaped Ghibli has cut in line. Word is that we may see the new Ghibli as early as the Shanghai Motor Show in April.
Citing unnamed sources, MT predicts that the minds at Maserati now see a more pressing need to fight off the likes of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the BMW 5 Series than to go after luxury utes. However, if our spy shots of Ghibli prototypes are anything to go on, it's also likely that the sub-Quattroporte Maser won't be a traditional sedan. The car above's long nose, low roof and brief, sloping rear deck all bring to mind Audi's lovely A7, Meaning the Ghibli may fall into the always murky four-door-coupe/luxury hatchback genre.
Bi-turbocharged iterations of both a V6 and a V8 should make up the early powertrain choices for the Maserati, meaning the top-spec Ghibli should have loads of shove to match its promised good looks.
