In 1966 a one-year-only Wildcat "Gran Sport Performance Group" package could be ordered by selecting the "A8/Y48" option. Two engine choices were available. The single carb 425 CID/340 hp V8 was included in the base package price but a 360 hp (268 kW) dual-carb set-up was also available at extra cost. Initially, this 20 hp (15 kW) upgrade remained a dealer installed carb/intake modification bolted to stock MT-coded engines but eventually these "Super Wildcats" could also be obtained direct from the factory with MZ-coded engines. Rounding out both the base and Super GS packages were dual exhaust, heavy-duty suspension, posi-traction and updated rear quarter-panel "GS" badging in the new, initials-only format employed on all post-1965 Gran Sports. A total of 1244 Wildcat GS's were built by Buick during the model year. Of those 242 were convertibles and the rest were hardtops. A mere 22 (consisting of an unknown mix of both body styles) earned Super Wildcat decals.

The Riviera GS was equipped with the three-speed Super Turbine 400 automatic transmission, Buick's name for the Turbo Hydra-Matic 400, which came with a variable pitch torque converter for quicker launches. Recalibrated to allow shifts at higher rpm and featuring a reinforced valve body, the GS transmission wore a BS code on its identification tag. The variable-pitch stator, known by the name Switch-Pitch, was used by Cadillac and Oldsmobile as well between 1965 and 1967, and developed a following in the drag racing community. The Super Turbine 400 used in the 1964-1966 cars will bolt up only to nailheads, which used their own pattern. Adapters are available to mate a nailhead to a transmission with a Chevrolet bolt pattern. The easy way to identify a Switch-Pitch unit is by the horseshoe-shaped indentation in the pan, which is where the filter picks up the fluid.

Jim Bell, president of Kenne Bell of Rancho Cucamonga, California, and an expert in high-performance Buick V-8s, is a big fan of the Switch-Pitch torque converter. "It gives you all the advantages of a high-stall torque converter with none of the disadvantages," he said.

Like the regular Turbo Hydra-Matic 400, the Super Turbine 400 has a reputation for being bulletproof. Car and Driver, in a road test, referred to the Super Turbine as "without question, the best automatic transmission in the world."

For 1966, all Rivieras had Buick's 12-inch Al-Fin aluminum drum brakes all around, with power assist standard. These were more resistant to fade than cars with iron drums, although Britain'sAutocar magazine was able to render the car brakeless after three panic stops. In 1967, Buick offered front discs with Bendix four-piston calipers as a $79 option. Just 6 percent of Riviera buyers chose the new brakes.

Maserati looking to book 13,000 sales of new Quattroporte in 2013

Mon, 10 Dec 2012

Europe's continuing financial woe is forcing automakers to get creative, and while Fiat may be scaling back its volume vehicles, it's looking to ramp up production of the exclusive Maserati brand. Following the debut of a new Quattroporte sedan, Fiat wants to boost Maserati sales to 50,000 vehicles by 2015. Maserati may lose as much as €7 million ($9.05 million) this year, and Fiat is betting big on Chrysler platforms and dealers to turn that around.
Currently regarded as a low-volume boutique carmaker, Maserati sold just 6,159 units last year, and 4,700 units through three quarters of this year. For 2013, Fiat boss Sergio Marchionne is targeting 13,000 in sales of the redesigned Quattroporte alone. Fiat apparently wants the brand's low volume image to change, hoping to position it closer to BMW and Porsche in the market.
The recent unveiling of the new Quattroporte will be followed by more new vehicle launches, including a crossover utility called Levante, and a long-promised sub-Quattroporte sedan, called Ghibli. The latter will share certain components with the Chrysler 300 sedan in an effort to optimize production costs. The Ghibli will be positioned to take on the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. It's all in an effort to turn the profit tide for Maserati and its parent company Fiat amidst European economic turmoil.

Maserati GranTurismo successor to be smaller, fight Porsche 911

Wed, 05 Jun 2013

The Chevrolet Corvette, Jaguar F-Type and Porsche 911 all belong to a club that shuns the Maserati GranTurismo as an outsider. You see, those three key sports cars all measure within an inch of one another in length - 176 to 177 inches and change - while the Maserati comes in at over 192 inches. Naturally, there's extra length between its wheels, as well.
While those extra inches would seemingly pay dividends in interior roominess and storage space, those are not exactly the most important attributes in the segment, which values proper proportions and proper driving feel over all else. All of this is why it comes as little surprise that Maserati is working on a smaller version of its two-door sports car platform when the next generation is ready in roughly three years.
According to Motor Trend and echoing rumors we've heard in the past, the smaller model will be known as the Gran Sport while a larger model will still be called GranTurismo in coupe form and GranCabrio in convertible guise. We're told, again, to expect Maserati's new 404-horsepower supercharged V6 engine as standard, while the V8 would still be a possible option.

Maserati dubs new SUV Levante, new sedan to resurrect Ghibli moniker

Fri, 28 Sep 2012

Building on the introduction of the GranCabrio MC that debuted at the Paris Motor Show, Maserati is planning three new models over the next couple of year in an attempt to raise sales to 50,000 units annually by 2015. While we think that that is a pretty lofty goal for a boutique automaker, redesigning its flagship sedan and adding two all-new models in popular segments sounds like a great plan of attack
The first new car we'll see from the Italian automaker is the next generation of the Quattroporte which will be a fitting way to celebrate the car's golden anniversary. We've already seen spy pictures of the new Quattroporte testing as well as a series of patent drawings that reportedly show the car's basic lines. Expect the new Quattroporte out sometime next year with a possible launch at the Detroit Auto Show.
Following the new Quattroporte, we'll finally get to climb behind the wheel of a Maserati SUV... just not the Kubang. Maserati confirmed that its new utility vehicle, based on the Jeep Grand Cherokee, will in fact be named the Levante. We already knew that Maserati would definitely not be using the odd Kubang name after this year, but if the Levante name sounds familiar, it's because we previously reported that this name would be used on a sedan slotting in below the Quattroporte.
