I’m coming to the end of my “2014 hoard reduction sale”. 14 cars are too many (yes…I counted them and couldn’t believe it either) so I’m selling off my duplicates.

Up for auction is an early (August 1963 build date) 1964 MGB. I bought this car several months ago in the hopes of finding a car built close to my birth date. After a long search, this was as close as I could find. Of course, as always happens, after I bought this one a car built 3 days after I was born was listed on ebay so I bought it. Even though the car I am selling is a better (and running) car, it isn’t the one I want so it needs to go.

Let me start by saying that the paintwork on this car is ugly. Because I try to be as honest as possible I have to say and this paint job is a mediocre Earl Scheib paint job at best. It looks good in pictures. Viewed in person, your eyes will hurt, your friends will shun you and it is probably responsible for the extinction of the dinosaurs. I am exaggerating, of course, but I want to set your expectations that you aren’t going to enter this car in car show and win any best of show prizes any time soon. The car (at 50 years old) has some bumps and bruises so don’t expect perfection.

The previous owner did spend some money on the car. I have receipts totaling well over $2800 for work performed March 16, 2012 including a new brake system, radiator, pertronix ignition, tie rod ends, alignment, etc. There are many other receipts from Moss and Victoria British for parts totaling hundreds more. What does this mean for you? The car runs VERY nicely. The original 3 main engine has excellent oil pressure, runs, cool, and drives nicely. There is no smoke on startup and no weird noises. The clutch is excellent and the 3syncro 4 speed transmission shifts cleanly. This is a nice running car.

The car comes with the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate verifying that this is an original MATCHING numbers car. That is a rarity in itself.

Please read the following description carefully. I put a lot of detail in my ad so please read everything at least once if not twice

BODY: As I mentioned, you won’t be winning any awards with the paint on this one. The paint is a 5 to 10 footer. The car looks good driving down the road. Up close it’s just not great. The car was originally tartan red. However, the paint conversion was pretty thorough so you won’t find much evidence of the original red.

As far as rust is concerned the car is pretty solid. I did the ice pick test all under the car before I bought it and found no holes. There is the normal surface rust but no real “rust” areas that I could find. The sills are nice, doors are solid, etc. The only negative points that I could find is I’m pretty sure there is some bondo in the bottom of the rear fenders and the antenna hole on the right front fender is bigger than the current antenna (there is a gap at the antenna base).

It looks like the car had a fender bender on the right front of the car at some point because you can see some repair welding on the radiator duct panel where it meets the inner panel. The “frame“ itself is perfectly straight.

The car has the correct front fenders (note the spacing of the turn signals) and aluminum bonnet (front hood). It also has the correct body colored steel rear bumper corner filler plates.

There is a dent on the left rear fender under the taillight.

All the glass is original and in good shape. It has the correct markings.

The convertible top is brand new. Also…as an interesting note this car has the somewhat rare and original style folding top that was only available on the 1962-1963 cars

INTERIOR: The original seats (with vinyl covering instead of leather) are there along with new oak mounting strips. The previous owner put down dynamat (or equivalent) on the floorboards and rear trunk and all new carpet.

The steel dash is in good shape but could use new paint to be perfect. The previous owner bought a new knob for the heater control but did not install it. The new and old knobs are included as well as new window strips. There are no holes that don’t belong.

The car has the original Jaeger speedometer and mechanical tachometer. The car also has the original style door caps and inside passenger door lock. It also has the correct style door and truck locks (no keys) as found on early cars. Of course it has pull type door handles and curved vent window latches

ELECTRICAL: Believe it or not everything works…lights, horn, wipers, gauges, map light, etc. It even has an aftermarket “Oogah” horn that works!

HYDRAULICS: The previous owner had an all new braking system installed. The car stops great and the clutch system works fine. No issues at all in the hydraulics

FUEL SYSTEM: No issues. The carbs are well adjusted and the car idles and drives nicely.

MECHANICAL: The PO had all the fluids changed in March 2012 (around 400 miles ago)

ENGINE: The engine is the ORIGINAL 3 main bearing unit with the correct serial number per the BMIHT certificate. It runs great…no issues

MISCELLANEOUS: The car has a batter cutoff switch and good tires.   There are some new parts included.

In summary, this is a solid car with most, if not all, of the early MGB parts still on the car. You can drive the car all summer and repaint it this winter in time for the Spring car shows!
