For auction and reluctant sale is my Lotus Birkin Super 7. The car was imported as a rolling chassis and body from South Africa in the early 1990s by a builder of Porsche Speedster replicas who planned to expand his business to include the Super 7. After a few years the car still hadn't been painted or received running gear, so it was sold to a local Newport Beach, Ca. enthusiast for completion. The new owner was a well known car and aviation enthusiast and aviation businessman in southern California. The car was titled as a 1973 lotus 7 for whatever reason. The builder also actually has attached what appears to be an original lotus seven VIN plate to the firewall. I am not sure why this was done but I suspect it had something to do with California DMV rules. In any event, the car has a clean and clear Florida title at present. The new owner wanted a low maintenance, reliable twin-cam four-cylinder engine that had been designed for use in a rear wheel drive car, so a 1.8L Mazda Miata engine and gearbox were considered the best fit. He purchased the miata drive train out of a nearly new miata with 1000 documented miles. The miata owner elected to perform a ford mustang 5.0 l V8 engine swap. Thus, a nearly new drivetrain was obtained. Wilwood disc brakes were installed up front and the solid rear axle received drums. High quality Fly Yellow paint was applied to the aluminum and fiberglass body and the interior was trimmed in black leatherette/vinyl. The car is complete with both a full windshield and the Brooklands screen included. A top, full tonneau and side curtains are included as well. The yellow paint and black interior are in great condition. This Birkin had traveled just 583 miles when I purchased it two years ago and now has 1003 miles on chassis and remains in excellent condition throughout. It is extremely fast and very well set-up. I have owned dozens and dozens of sports cars and this by far has been the most fun car I have ever owned. This statement is made having owned numerous Porsches, Ferraris etc etc. I have had three “real” lotus 7s in the past and frankly the maintenance was so high I didn’t get to really enjoy them much. I was excited about this car in the fact that it could sit for months on a trickle charger and you can hit the start toggle switch and instant idle…no lotus twin cam head gaskets issues etc etc. If you want a really nicely prepared lotus seven that has Japanese-like reliability and low maintenance then this is the 7 for you. It has literally been sitting in my garage and not being driven. I am a busy professional with a family and frankly it needs to be in the ownership of someone who can enjoy her and drive her as she needs. My reserve is less than what a new birkin kit costs. The Stig bungees a Lotus F1 car in Durban
Mon, 18 Aug 2014Remember a couple of months ago when a mischievous Stig broke into the Lotus racing headquarters in Enstone and made off with an F1 car? Well, now we know where he went with it.
In this humorous clip from Top Gear, the tamed racing driver in the white suit disembarks with Pastor Maldonado's Lotus-Renault E22 (not the E21 he took from the team's headquarters, eagle-eye viewers might notice) in Durban, South Africa, and takes it to Moses Mabhida Stadium for the Top Gear Festival. After having some fun on a dirt bike, a chrome Mustang drift car and a few other curiosities, he hooks it up to a bungee cord and jumps off a tower behind the wheel.
Now we're not quite convinced they actually did this and that it wasn't all CGI, but it's still worth a watch and a laugh.
Lotus settles with ex-CEO Dany Bahar, avoids London High Court
Sun, 25 May 2014Five years after it began, it appears the Dany Bahar tenure at Lotus is finally over. After former Lotus owner Proton brought in the ex-Ferrari and Red Bull marketing savant to run the company in 2009, everything had gone pear-shaped by 2012: Proton had been sold to Malaysian auto supplier DRB-Hicom, who suspended Bahar and then fired him for what it said were expense-account transgressions (although Bob Lutz reportedly said something different).
The separation led to the expected suit and countersuit, Lotus going after Bahar to get its money back, Bahar filing a $10.6-million suit againt Lotus for wrongful termination and potential bonus money. The case was set to go to trial next month but both parties have settled, the terms undisclosed, a DRB-Hicom statement saying only that "the parties involved in the legal suit have signed a Settlement Agreement and Release... and have agreed to withdraw their claims against each other."
Now that that bit of housecleaning is all cleared up, can new CEO Jean-Marc Gales please get our Esprit?
Lotus F1 apologizes for tweeting support for LGBT Olympians
Mon, 10 Feb 2014The Lotus Formula One Team is apologizing after its official Twitter account posted this image of two men kissing in connection to the opening of the Winter Olympics on Friday, February 7. It claims that the original tweet was "unauthorized."
The tweet, which Lotus deleted later that day, can be viewed to the right and was promptly replaced an apology that said, "We would like to sincerely apologise for an unauthorized message posted on our Twitter account today & will ensure this cannot happen again." Responses to the kerfuffle on its Twitter page have mostly focused on confusion as to what the original tweet was and why it was removed.
While the Sochi Olympics have been controversial among LBGT groups because of Russia's laws banning so-called "gay propaganda," the country has a growing importance in F1. In fact, the first Russian Grand Prix is scheduled to run later this season on a circuit around the Sochi Olympic Park. Genii Capital, the team's owner, has business interests in Russia, and according to the BBC, the Lotus F1 team is working on a deal to with Russian mobile phone company Yotaphone to sell it 10 percent of the team.
