Rare Vesuvius Edition Supercharged Sport for auction.
4.2L Supercharged V8 AC, heated seats, sunroof, keyless entry, navigation, rear headrest DVD's, center console cooler, and various other amenities that evoke opulence. I'll be completely transparent about every known aspect of this Sport. I am listing this for a friend who does not have an eBay account. The title is clear and in his name. A copy of the title can be made available for serious parties. The entire vehicle was repainted several months ago by a professional body shop. It started with wanting to paint the door handles, rear hatch trim, and lower body trim to match the rest of the body. It ended up with the entire vehicle painted to eliminate rock chips and scratches too. The Sport was NOT in an accident. This Sport does have a few issues that need to be addressed but we are offering full disclosure. Read carefully so nobody has their tender feelings hurt. The passenger seat does not move backward or forward. All other motion functions of the seat work as intended. The CD eject button on the radio fell out. The button is not available by itself so the entire unit will need to be replaced. Used ones are readily available off ebay and from junk yards or upgrade to an aftermarket unit. Three factory keys are included but only one of them has functional keyless entry. The functional unit is new and in perfect condition. The other two are useful as spares/back-ups. The rear sway bar bushings need to be replaced. There will be a mild clunk in the rear suspension until they are replaced. Clunk present in front EAS struts (Electronic Air Suspension). May require replacement of just a bushing or the entire unit. Arnott has replacements with a lifetime guarantee for $365 each. Lastly, there is a "transmission fault" that pops up on the info center in the instrument binnacle. The error has been checked out several times by different shops. The code is P081C. The consensus is that the error is a false positive. The transmission is fine but the TCU (Transmission Control Unit) incorrectly thinks something is wrong. The transmission operates flawlessly. The error message is merely an annoyance. All pictures featured were taken with vehicle in "Access Mode", therefore lower than it's stock driving height. The Sport has NOT been lowered. Recent service includes oil change and new OEM supercharger cooling pump. |

This Or That: 1987 VW Vanagon Syncro vs. 1987 Land Rover Defender [w/poll]
Thu, 13 Nov 2014As I scoured auction sites and classified ads for the perfect vehicle to take into battle with Autoblog Associate Editor Brandon Turkus, I knew I needed to find something unique. You see, I'm currently 0-2 at winning a round of This or That, in which two of our editors agree on a category, choose a side, and argue it out over a (mostly) friendly chain of emails.
The first time we did this, my chosen Fiat 500 Abarth took about a third of the popular vote in our reader poll. The second time, my lovely 1980 Oldsmobile 442 did just a little bit better against a 1989 BMW 635 CSi. Despite holding the opinion that my automotive choices, though perhaps a little bit more... obscure than my fellow editors, are still better, an outright win would go a long way toward boosting my vehicular self worth a few notches upward.
With all of that out of the way, even if three isn't my lucky number after all, I go into battle against Brandon knowing full well that I've made the perfect choice: A 1987 Volkswagen Vanagon Syncro. My rough-and-tumble van/'ute has a formidable opponent in the form of a 1987 Land Rover Defender, which, truth be told, is exactly what I was expecting from Turkus, a self-proclaimed Rover aficionado.
Going high-tech, the 4x4 way
Tue, 26 Feb 2013Is It An Off-Road Adventure Or Just A Walk In The Park?
I remember having to get out and lock hubs and shift into neutral to engage low range.
Coming off press previews of the 2013 Land Rover Range Rover and the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee that involved some heavy-duty off-road rock climbing, I'm simply amazed at the capabilities that these vehicles possess. But even more impressive (or troubling depending on your perspective) is the relative ease with which you can operate these vehicles in seemingly impossible terrain.
Jaguar may join the FWD, small-car parade
Tue, 13 Aug 2013Was it right for Chevrolet to detune the 1975 Corvette's base engine to 165 horsepower? Was Aston Martin wrong to make the Toyota iQ-based Cygnet? Is BMW crazy to be testing the new 1 Series with three-cylinder engines and front-wheel drive? It seems now, just as in the 1970s and 1980s, that emissions regulations and social considerations are driving some automakers to adopt unbefitting practices to maintain acceptance in the eyes of governments and consumers. Jaguar has jumped on the bandwagon, and is considering development of small, frugal, front-wheel-drive cars to help lower Jaguar Land Rover's average vehicle CO2 levels in light of tightening European emissions regulations, Autocar reports.
By 2020, the European Union expects the model range of every manufacturer to average 95 grams per kilometer, which is a new law passed by the European Parliament in April. Manufacturers who make more than 300,000 vehicles per year must meet these targets, and JLR is expected to be producing up to 700,000 vehicles per year by then. CO2 regulations after 2020 will only get stricter, as EU politicians already are talking about lowering CO2 levels to between 68 g/km and 78 g/km. (To put that in perspective, Autocar posits that driving a fully charged electric vehicle in Europe produces about 75 g/km when factoring in the power-generation infrastructure.)
Jaguar has some choices here, but so far they all have drawbacks. It could develop a new, compact chassis architecture for a line of compact vehicles, but the investment required for such a project could be prohibitively expensive. Jaguar has been looking into using the Land Rover Evoque platform for a small SUV, Autocar reports, but Land Rover brand manager John Edwards raises issue with such a plan, saying it may not be financially feasible.
