Selling my 2004 KIA Optima to buy a newer commuting car.  I'm the 2nd owner, not including the KIA dealer that I bought it from.  It was first owned by a major rental car company.  I bought it with about 25K miles on it and used it to commute on the highway.  The motor and transmission are great.  This is the V6.  Acceleration is very good and smooth.  It has the usual scratches, but the biggest blemish is a small hand-sized shallow dent on the right front.  I didn't see it happen, but someone did it in a parking lot.  From the same incident there is also a bit of door trim that separates from the passenger door.  You can see both in the pictures.  Other than that, the body and paint are in fair to good condition.

Although it has a lot of miles on it, everything is in working order except the air conditioning.  A local mechanic quoted $600 to install a new compressor.  I'd rather use that money toward a newer car.  So, if the situation fits you and you want to get a well running car at a low price - and can either live without the AC (since summer is almost over) or get it fixed on your own, this is a good car for a teen or anyone else that needs an inexpensive ride.  Because of the AC, I'm selling it at $700 under the Kelley Blue Book private party sale value.

The tires are brand new.  The spare is like new.  The heater works great.  Power windows and locks work fine.  The ABS brakes are good and have at least 50% on the pads.  New rotors and flushed brake lines a few years ago.  The oil has been changed routinely and there are no leaks of any kind.  The timing belt and water pump were replaced at 130K.  No warning lights are on.  All lights and signals work.

Kia using quality and technology to increase sales and brand prestige

Thu, 11 Apr 2013

Kia is a long way from hawking the anonymous lozenge known as the Sephia on our shores. That was only 1994, though, and in less than 20 years the company has gone from judging its aspirations against Japanese budget competition to walking auto show floors checking out the German standard-bearers for tips on how to increase sales and brand prestige. In an interview with Automotive News, Kia executives laid out their plan for carving out a Volkswagen-like niche for the company whereby they could be viewed as the premium pick in a volume segment. Concepts like the Kia Cub, above, would seem to point in this direction.
Kia is keen to make sure its sales targets don't impinge on its quest for better and better quality.
Kia's prime directive is "an unrelenting focus on quality." The Japanese brands earned a reputation for bulletproof reliability, and Kia is keen to make sure its sales targets don't impinge on its quest for better and better quality - neither in-house nor for its suppliers, a trade-off we've seen go wrong before. It has a Pilot Center that studies each new model for potential production problems before being given the approval for manufacture, and it isn't until the quality control department gives the okay that manufacture can begin.

Kia calls reports of second US plant 'groundless'

Thu, 25 Apr 2013

In discussing how Kia planned to use a focus on quality to raise its brand perception and take the fight to BMW and Audi instead of Toyota, a recent article in Automotive News Europe said one of the primary constraints was production capacity; Kia simply doesn't have the ability to make enough cars to meet its aims with the plants it has.
The CEO of Hyundai-Kia is said to be reluctant to build more plants because of that focus on quality and the fact that its suppliers are stretched to the limit. The effects of that position are being felt right now with both makers losing market share, as in the case of Hyundai not being able to make enough of its Veloster Turbo for the US market.
A South Korean newspaper apparently reported last week that Kia was planning to build a second factory in Georgia with capacity for up to 150,000 units annually, and that the company would break ground as soon as this month on "KMMG2." Kia has responded to the news by saying, "The report is all groundless." The mayor of West Point, site of the current KMMG plant, said he didn't know anything about such plans, nor did the Georgia department of economic development have knowledge of a new Kia factory.

Kia showcasing Optima T-Hybrid concept in Paris [w/video]

Mon, 29 Sep 2014

At the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, Kia showcased a new diesel hybrid powertrain. And at the rapidly approaching Paris Motor Show, it will present that new technology in the Optima sedan concept you see here.
Called the Kia Optima T-Hybrid, the concept mates a 1.7-liter diesel with both a turbocharger and electric supercharger to a small electric motor and a 48-volt lead-carbon battery. The mild hybrid setup allows it to travel in electric-only model at low speeds and at cruise, regenerating brake power to recharge the battery. Kia said it chose the lead-carbon battery pack over lithium-ion because it's easier to recycle and does not require active cooling.
Because the powertrain is still under development, Kia isn't saying what kind of fuel economy or emissions figures it gets in the Optima T-Hybrid concept, but it is targeting a "significant reduction" in emissions and fuel consumption, while delivering 15 to 20 percent more power. Check out the system in action in the video below.
