Reliable Jeep- I bought this Wagoneer sight-unseen while I was in Iraq in 2011.  I had my wife and dad pick it up for me in Laramie, WY because I needed a good daily driver for my very short drive to work each day when I returned to Cheyenne.  It has served me well for two years and would continue to be a great daily driver or a restoration or off-road project.  It has some flaws, but works great.  Here's what you're looking at:

-All original AMC 360 V8, 2bbl carb. Emissions were removed by a prior owner (I'm the third).  Starts very easily and runs strong.
-Hydramatic Automatic Transmission: works/shifts just fine.
-Quadra-Trac (Borg Warner 1339) full-time 4x4 Transfer Case with low range: works great
-Milemarker 4x2 conversion (I installed this conversion myself, which converted the transfer case from full time 4x4 to part-time/selectable 2 or 4-wheel drive and added front lockout hubs... I'll include all the parts that were swapped out in case purchaser would like to return it to its original, full-time 4x4 state)
-A/C: original.  When my wife and dad picked up the Wagoneer for me, it threw a belt.  A repair shop advised them to unplug the electrical connection to the A/C and we've not had a problem since.  Apparently, when the compressor turned on, the clutch was acting up and would cause the belt to jump off the pulley.  I haven't had a need for a/c, so I haven't worried about it.  Seems like a bad clutch, though.
-Heater works flawlessly.  This is important during the Wyoming winters.
-All carpet and upholstery is original.  It's in really good shape for its age. The only tears on the seats are on the driver's seat (see pictures) on the lower front-left side, and the lower-left side of the seat back.  Other than that, they're in unbelievable condition.
-Hoodliner is gone in the front (from the back seat area, forward) and hanging on in the rear (above the cargo area).
-Rear Electric Window: Works from the switch on the dash, but the keyhole switch quit working.  I'm sure this would be an easy fix, since the window motor/gears are still working fine.
-All interior door handles work.  Window crank handles work, but the driver's side rear door window crank handle is broken (see picture).  I've found this online for $10 (bjsffroad.com) plus shipping and attaches with a single screw.
-Body: See pictures... Surface rust on hood, roof. Bottom of driver door dinged/dented, rust on rear driver's side "dog leg" panel and both rear quarter panels, by wheel wells, rear driver's side bumper mount is broken and the left side of the bumper has been suspended by 550 cord- seriously (I did this just to get by until I could get another bumper but it completely hid the fact and I am just fine with it).

History (As I was told): The original owner purchased this vehicle in Laramie, WY in 1979.  He had it until he passed, sometime around 2007, when it was sold by his grandson, who had inherited it but didn't need it, to the fellow I purchased it from, also living in Laramie, WY.  He collected and fixed up old Jeep trucks for off-road use and told me that he had thought he'd get around to doing more with the Wagoneer, but just never did, so decided to sell it.

Since returning in January of '12, I've used it almost exclusively for my daily drive to work- about 9 miles, round trip.  I do get it on the interstate occasionally, and it is really impressive how it handles/drives.  It accelerates to highway speeds without a thought and is actually a pleasure to drive on the highway, even with all of the windows down.  I have never "off-roaded" in it, but I have taken a 30 mile drive down the interstate and hit the dirt roads of the Vedauwoo and the Pole Mountain areas.  The Wagoneer is just perfect for this type of outing and I have every confidence that, if I wanted to spend the gas money, it would get me wherever I wanted to go in it.

Why I'm selling it: With two young kids and my wife in school, my daily travel has increased drastically.  So, it's not practical for me to keep this vehicle as my daily driver, anymore.  While I have every confidence that it will get me where I need to go, I can't afford to put gas in it as often as I now have to.  Hopefully someone else will be able to enjoy it the way I have, or even make it into something really special.   Thanks for looking.

AEV Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon

Fri, 28 Feb 2014

After their rented 2007 Hummer H3 failed them during the brutal Rallye Aicha des Gazelles in Morocco, Amy Lerner and her sister Tricia Reina were on a quest to find the most capable production off-roader for their next competition - they chose a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon. Their next mission was to find a company with the competence to configure it to win. After poring over Internet forums and perusing countless magazines for an outfitter who could meet their demanding requirements, they sent their bright orange JK ("Crush" is the official color) to American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) for some modifications.
The Michigan-based team at AEV kept the Jeep's 3.6-liter V6 and automatic transmission stock, but replaced the hood with a tall AEV Heat Reduction Hood and added an AEV Snorkel Kit for water crossings (it serves double-duty as its raised height helps to keep the air intake out of the kicked-up dust on the trail). Front and rear off-road bumpers were bolted in place, and AEV skid plates were added to provide additional undercarriage protection. A pair of IPF-900 off-road lights improve visibility, while a 10.2-gallon AEV Fuel Caddy (located behind the exterior spare) added some range. The suspension was upgraded with a 3.5-inch lift kit with Bilstein remote reservoir shocks, and 35-inch Falken Wildpeak A/T tires (LT285/70R17) were mounted at all four corners on AEV's beadlock wheels.

What's really going on with the 2014 Jeep Cherokee's transmission issues?

Fri, 27 Sep 2013

On September 23, Automotive News reported that Chrysler had idled the second shift workers it hired just five weeks prior at its Toledo Assembly Complex to build the 2014 Jeep Cherokee. At the time, Chrysler said it had "built the critical number of vehicles we need to stock dealerships once containment is released" and did not want "to put additional strain on our logistics partners ... upon release." That reasoning was not only unusual, it didn't seem to make sense.
It appears the center of the nine-speed issue is software, not hardware.
That same day, the Detroit News ran a piece claiming workers at the Toledo factory said the halt was due to issues with the Cherokee's transmission. It put the number of already-built Cherokees needing fixes at 1,000 and said that some of the workers not laid off had been instructed "to take the Jeep on long test-drives." That made more sense. Three days later, on September 26, Automotive News reported that the 500 workers laid off had been reinstated, with engineers "speeding repairs on the SUV's powertrain software." The AN piece didn't put a number on how many units are being fixed, but it did say that 12,000 have been built and are awaiting delivery to dealers. The best it could say about when dealers will get them, however, is that "progress on a fix is being made. It's unclear when shipments to dealers will start."

Jeep brings quartet of concepts to Beijing to show its Chinese style

Mon, 21 Apr 2014

Jeep is making a big play for the Chinese crossover market at the 2014 Beijing Motor Show. It has a quartet styling concepts for the Renegade, Cherokee and Wrangler that are inspired by Chinese culture at the show.
Among them is the newest member of the Jeep lineup - the Renegade. Its Zi You Xia concept (pictured above) comes from the Mandarin for "rebel," and it's painted in Warm Chocolate Gray with Dark Anodized Bronze trim, including the 20-inch wheels. The roof, grille surround, and mirror caps are done in a complimentary Dark Charcoal color as an accent. The interior is a mix of dark brown leather and Anodized Copper trim. This is one swanky compact crossover.
The Cherokee Sageland and Urbane concepts are meant to show to different sides of Chinese style. With inspiration from the Shangri-La Region, the Sageland has Ivory Pearl tri-coat paint with bronze trim on the outside, and the interior is covered in Gray Nappa leather with red and blue stitching. The Urbane's look comes from the nightlife in the country's cities. The exterior is a color called Maximum Steel with Hyper Black trim. Inside, it combines Piano Black trim with dark red leather seats.
