This is a 1966 Jeep Commando.  Sort of a rare bird really, I have seen on some sites that there were few of these made.  Not sure what the exact number is. I have heard like 800 or so for that year.  Maybe more or less.  Has the original V6.  Tranny is an SMP420 Chevy, dana 20 T-case, and the axles are 70's model CJ axles.  I didn't do any of this, so I have no idea what the specifics are on those items.  The pictures tell you the story, some rust in the bed, near the tailgate, and near the front quarter panel seams.  Carb needs adjusted a bit, it takes a bit to get it started when cold, but runs well after that.  Runs 60-75 on the highway, and I have used it as a daily driver.  Has a valve cover leak and I have the new seals, but I havent gotten around to putting them on.  This has affected the starter at times, sometimes the starter takes a couple of turns on the key to engage.  Put the seals on the valve covers, this will go away. I also purchased gaskets for the manifolds, has a bit of an exhaust leak.  I also have new shocks for it as well.  I purchased another steering wheel that is original, but haven't put it on.  All the switches work except for the wiper washer. Heater works good, two speeds for the fan, all original.  The gauges all work, and the lights all work on the dash cluster.  Glows a cool green at night with the lights on. Has an aftermarket radio, but I have never used it.  The original bumpers are in the bed of the jeep at this time.  All lights work, signals and brakes.  Brakes work fine as well.  Clutch is good, no problems there.  Has all the original mechanisms for the rear tail gate, clips and everything works.  The spare tire carrier is actually a period correct aftermarket add on.  Also have some better "V6" emblems than what are currently on the jeep.  In fact, I have the rear emblems that go on the tail gate as well.  Frame has some surface rust, but I see no areas of rust through and it appears strait to me.  tagged and titled in Oklahoma. title is clear. Has the original Kaiser Jeep tag on the body on the firewall as well.  One more item I have is the console and shifter that you can use to make this an automatic transmission Commando. Despite its looks, its a solid old rig and could be on the trail today the way it sits.

The Scrambler that you may see in one of the photos is sold, so don't ask lol.

Jeep dealer buries WWII Willys GP in showroom floor

Tue, 04 Nov 2014

The Willys MB Jeep earned icon status during World War II thanks to its ruggedness, simplicity and go-anywhere ability. Following the war, it didn't take long for the handy vehicles to be scooped up by the public, and a brand slowly grew around the vehicles that has continued to thrive. Fast-forward to present day, where it's not uncommon for auto dealers to try to grab some of the magic of yesteryear by displaying classic models to connect customers with their brands' proud histories. Now, a Canadian Chrysler Group dealer is taking that notion to the extreme by actually making a vintage WWII Jeep part of its foundation.
Bay King Chrysler in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, recently completed its new showroom, and the franchise really wanted to show its dedication to the Jeep brand. As dealer principal Jamie Richter tells Autoblog, the inspiration for the Jeep installation came from his brother, who became fascinated with a home that had a glass floor looking down into its wine cellar. The company already had the 1943 Willys MB to display, but it had originally planned to build a jungle gym around it for customers' kids. Now, the classic is literally in the floor as customers enter. Richter tells Autoblog that customer reaction so far has been "fantastic."
It's certainly a novel way to bring people into the showroom, and seemingly a nice nod not only to Jeep, but to the men and women who served in the war. If you want to see more about how the Jeep was actually installed and what it looks like, check out this video.

NHTSA still mulling crash tests for recalled Jeeps

Thu, 15 Aug 2013

Well, no one should ever accuse the government of not giving things plenty of thought. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is still debating whether it will retest any of the 1.56 million 1992 to 1998 Grand Cherokees and 2002 to 2007 Libertys that were part of a recall regarding fires after rear-end collisions. And yes, this debate has been going on for over a month. In other news...
The recall dustup started in early June, when Chrysler took the unusual position of refusing a recall request from NHTSA regarding placement of the fuel tank on the effected vehicles. NHTSA said a collision could cause a fire, a position Chrysler took issue with. Extensive negotiations ensued, with Chrysler agreeing to fit certain Jeeps with trailer hitches, which it said would provide some protection to fuel tanks mounted behind the rear axle in the event of a collision.
Part of the issue rests with the amount of data that needs to be processed, according to The Detroit News. NHTSA administrator David Strickland said during a Washington Auto Press Association meeting, "There's a lot of data and Chrysler is being very cooperative in giving us more data." Until that information has been sorted, it looks like re-testing will still be up for debate.

Jeep Twitter account hacked, bad language, poor grammar and some hilarity ensue

Tue, 19 Feb 2013

Just a day after Burger King's Twitter account was compromised by "unauthorized users," Jeep's social media feed has been similarly hacked. Both instances of digital incursion share some similarities - the BK hackers changed the company's logo for McDonald's familiar golden arches, saying a sale had occurred, while the Jeep miscreants have replaced Jeep's branding with that of General Motors property Cadillac.
The resulting tweets from the damaged Jeep account have been a pretty brutal, to put it bluntly. Most of the content coming from the hacked account is unpublishable here, using language that is peppered with racial epithets, and poorly worded "shout outs."
In addition to the defamatory tweets themselves, the hackers have significantly altered the layout of the page. Jeep's header image now features a picture of the Cadillac ATS to go along with the Wreath and Crest, some language calling out that car as winning the 2013 North American Car of the Year award, and this gem: "The official Twitter handle for the Jeep(R) - Just Empty Every Pocket, Sold To Cadillac =[" Also, perhaps in an ode to yesterday's Burger King heist, the background image for the page now features a McDonald's-themed donk. The devil's in the details, we guess.
