Garage Find!

This truck was purchased back in 1997 from the original owner and driven to my garage intending to just take the moldings off and have it painted. It turned into a full blown body off restoration. The fenders and inner skirts were rusted, the doors, rockers and floors were rusted along with the bed, etc. All new NOS sheet metal was located and purchased: Hood, Radiator Support, Both Fenders, Both Inner Fenders, Both Rocker panels.

New replacement floors were obtained along with inner rockers, cab corners, floor supports and new body mounts. These were all installed professionally by a restoration technician. A bed was found out of state and trucked in. It was rust free but improper shipping caused some damage which had to be repaired by the same restoration tech, With the vehicle down this far it was decided to remove the engine and send it out to be rebuilt/overhauled by a local a machine shop. It returned and is wrapped in lawn/garden bags to keep out moisture and dust. 4 or 5 years into the project the owner (my friend) got serious with his now (now married) and has several other projects going: a fiberglass bodied 360 powered jeep cj, and a 1987 Buick Grand National with 20,000 original miles on it, plus others. He finally sold the truck and all the parts to another friend of mine a couple years ago, with the intention of finishing it but his 1970 Chevelle SS396 came first. Now he has been laid off and I want my Garage back! There are a bunch of new parts that go with it also: Big radiator, new fuel tank, new stainless steel fuel lines, edlebrock aluminum intake manifold, 4 new off road springs, 4 brand new off road shocks, new u-bolts, etc. The seat was sent out for reupholstery and never picked up, so that is missing. The windshield was stone pitted and discarded, the backglass was an original aluminum slider and was planned to have a newer updated glass installed. The front bumper and rear bumper were sent out for replating and he never got them back. Between the cost of the truck purchase, all the parts, and the labor paid out there was over 15,000 invested in the truck as it sits. Right now NOS hoods sell for $950.00, Fenders go for $500.00 each, The doors are going for $950.00 each, a good cab will set you back $1500.00 + shipping, and a rot free/damage free bed can cost $2000.00++. Still have all the moldings that separated the two tone and they are in good shape. A whole set on ebay could bring $600.00+, not counting the straight frame and front axle (w/lock out hubs)and rear axle. This could be purchased and parted out and double your $$ at least. Or finish it and it could bring $25K to $30K. Cash or Bank check only - no Pay Pal as ebay gets enough of our money, and now Pay Pal reports the income to the IRS! No shipping - pick up only...Happy Bidding!

GM recalling 54k Cadillac SRX, HD pickup models

Thu, 01 May 2014

There are more recalls to report General Motors, but these latest actions pertain to newer examples of the Cadillac SRX, Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD. With so much scrutiny on the company's recall strategy, GM is under increasing pressure to call in defective models more quickly, and it appears to be doing so here.
Here in the US, the automaker is recalling 50,571 Cadillac SRX crossovers from the 2013 model year fitted with the 3.6-liter V6 because the transmission control module programming can cause a three- or four-second lag in acceleration at low speeds. The explanation filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states, "if the following sequence occurs within two seconds: during an upshift from first to second gear (8-10 mph), the driver then brakes the vehicle to less than 5 mph, and then accelerates again," the delay can occur. According to Automotive News, the recall effects 56,400 vehicles worldwide, and the company is not aware of any crashes caused by the problem. The fix consists of a transmission control module (TCM) reflash.
In a separate recall, GM is repairing 51 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD pickups from the 2015 model year in the US. In vehicles with diesel engines and dual fuel tanks, the nuts that connect the fuel pipe to each side of the transfer pump between the tanks may be improperly torqued, which could cause a fuel leak. Obviously, this could be a fire hazard. The remedy is simply tightening the hardware. According to GM spokesperson Alan Adler, there have been no fires actually caused by the potential leak. "Only 21 of the trucks are in customer possession and they can be fixed anytime because there are no parts involved. The others are being fixed at dealerships," Adler said in an email to Autoblog.

GM delivers best Q3 sales since 1980, 2.4M vehicles sold

Wed, 15 Oct 2014

People are a weird sort. Even after registering over 70 recalls through the first three-quarters of 2014, General Motors saw its best Q3 results since Jimmy Carter was in the White House, registering over 2.4 million global sales between June and September on the back of strong results in the US and China.
US sales were marshaled by good results for GM's pickups, the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, which bumped the manufacturer's truck market share to 35.6 percent, up nearly three points from Q1 2014. Buick has seen healthy growth as well, with the Encore dominating its segment for the sixth month running.
It was China, though, that really bolstered GM's sales, as the company's efforts to top last year's record-setting 3.16 million units continued apace. Small SUV sales saw massive growth, with Encore, Chevrolet Trax and Captiva figures jumping 90 percent in Q3. Brand-wise, Chevrolet, Cadillac and Buick all saw sales gains in the PRC, with each recording double-digit year-over-year jumps. Cadillac sales alone were up 63 percent compared to the first nine months of 2013.

GM phasing out light-duty 1500-series vans

Mon, 16 Jun 2014

In the market for a fullsize van but don't need a heavy-duty model? You're in the minority, and you're also out of luck. That's because there are barely any more fullsize vans on the market with gross vehicle weight rating of less than 8,500 pounds, the threshold that separates light- and heavy-duty vans.
According to PickupTrucks.com, neither the Ford E-Series, Ram ProMaster, nor Mercedes-Benz Sprinter are available in light-duty versions. Few of the Ford Transit configurations are, either, and now General Motors is discontinuing production of the 1500-series Chevy Express and GMC Savana.
Apparently light-duty versions accounted for just 23 percent of Express sales and only 7 percent of Savanas. Add to that the fact that these 1500 versions were the only ones using the old generation of engines and suspension, and that the Wentzville plant near St. Louis, Missouri, is trying to make room for the next Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon pickups, and the fate of the light-duty GM van was sealed.
