1970 Ford Thunderbird Overview
The 1970 Ford Thunderbird was the next-to-last of the 'Glamour Bird' model years, before the 1972 redesign made the sleek muscle car bigger and bulkier. Changes for the 1970 model year were minimal.

A front-end redesign was the most significant cosmetic tweak to happen to the T-Bird between 1969 and 1970; a little origami to the grille made for a distinctive 'v-shaped' front end. The combination of the recessed headlights and the v-grille gave the '70 Thunderbird a look all its own.

Under the hood, the '70 Ford Thunderbird was a performance powerhouse, with a 7.0 liter V-8 engine that delivered 360 horsepower, and accelerated from zero to 60 in just 9 seconds. Drag racers loved it!

Hindsight is 20/20, and today we love this classic car. At the time, though, Ford didn't quite know how to sell its 'Glamor Bird'. The 1970 Thunderbird was available as either a two-door or four-door model, but the four-door version never caught on (perhaps the back-opening 'suicide doors' didn't help the TBird pass itself off as a family sedan?)

You'll still find plenty of these out there, but you're more likely to see them at a car show than on the streets (at least in the US; there are some wonderful old Thunderbirds still going strong over in Cuba). Anybody who's lucky enough to get their hands on one of these has a project car that most of us can only dream of.

Ford Focus ST, Fiesta ST buyers to get free Octane Academy driving school

Thu, 01 Aug 2013

The Ford Focus ST and Fiesta ST have created plenty of excitement in the sport compact segment, and Ford is looking to make sure that owners are driving and enjoying their cars to the best of their abilities. As an added bonus for buying one of these sporty hatchbacks, Ford will provide a complimentary ST Octane Academy session to be held at the Miller Motorsports Park in Utah.
Attendees will be responsible for travel and lodging, but Ford will provide the driving school free of charge. Included in this two-day trip, ST owners will get class instruction and driving instruction in prepped Focus ST and Fiesta ST models on the track and autocross course. Some karting action will also be involved as will a tour of Ken Block's Hoonigan Racing headquarters located nearby. If this doesn't sound like enough fun, there is also an optional day of activities that includes some more track time in a Mustang GT and off-road instruction in an F-150 SVT Raptor.
Ford told us that those who have already purchased a Focus ST or Fiesta ST will still be able to attend the performance driving school, but the press release, which is posted below, makes it sound like it applies to original owners only. Ford has yet to announce its schedule for the ST Octane Academy or prices for additional activities or guests.

Ford ST Octane Academy [w/video]

The ST school is about more than just handbrake turns, hot laps, and sliding into parking spaces.
I felt like such a rock star. On my second pass around the UrbanCross course (read: fancy autocross) at the Ford ST Octane Academy, I absolutely nailed the exit, sliding the bright-yellow Focus ST sideways into a box the size of a parking space, all four wheels in line.

Fiat boss Elkann being mentored by... Bill Ford?

Tue, 26 Mar 2013

Fiat Chairman John Elkann has been turning to an unusual source for advice on the car business. While speaking during an interview with The Detroit News, Elkann said he often asks Bill Ford Jr. for advice on how to proceed with the turnaround at Chrysler. "It's great to have the opportunity to share this with someone like Bill, who has experienced many things and gone through many things ... especially linked to Detroit." Elkann said.
As the Agnelli family heir, Elkann has inherited a long and fruitful friendship with the Ford family. While Giovanni Agnelli built his first Fiat four years before Henry Ford created his first vehicle, it was Ford that showed Agnelli the benefits of mass production and helped pave the way for what would become the Fiat empire.
Giovanni's grandson, Gianni, helped mentor Bill Ford when he was elected chairman of Ford Motor Company. Now, Ford is returning the favor by helping Elkann navigate the automotive industry's tumultuous waters.
