The "Bullet Bird" is an outstanding piece of American history from the time of Camelot.  Before the assassinations,  riots, Vietnam and Kent State.  The "Bullet Bird came out in 1961 and supposedly former Ford executive, Robert McNamara arranged to have 200 white Thunderbirds in Washington DC for John Kennedy's inauguration.  The styling is like no other from that time, but is purely early 60's  Americana.  Sleek lines and jet afterburner styled taillights are reminiscent of that era's Century Series jet fighters.  The dash was more a wrap around cockpit that merged into a large console separating two bucket seats.  A high tech steering column swung inward for ease of access, then back into position after the driver strapped in.

This incredibly original 1962 Thunderbird is one of the purest survivors available.  The car was sold new in Longview, Washington and had had only two owners and 75,000 miles on it when sold by a prominent classic car dealer in Portland, Oregon around 2002.  It was only driven 7,000 miles since and and was parked in a garage when the tags expired in 2006.  In the last 3 months it has had the fuel tank drained and flushed, a new radiator, water pump, belts / hoses, master cylinder, brake booster, starter and solenoid.  Brakes were inspected, front hubs turned and a wheel cylinder replaced.  Then it was given a major tune up and carburetor overhaul.  Finally the original Kelsey Hayes steel wheels were sandblasted, repainted and mounted with new Kuhma whitewall radial tires.  Everything works and it runs like when new.  The chrome trim and bumpers are lustrous and perfectly straight.  The body is very very straight and has been professionally inspected with no signs of previous damage.  The doors, hood and trunk hinges are smooth and solid, the fit is like it was on the showroom floor.  The glass is all original tinted and has no cracks, pitting or chips.  The seats are all original leather with negligable wear or sagging.  The headliner is perfect. The carpets are original and show almost no wear. The floor mats may be very likely original also. The engine and engine compartment are completely original and no attempt has been made at detailing or repainting anything under the hood (except the previously described new parts).  The trunk is in very good condition with the original cardboard paneling and a serviceable matching white wall spare tire.  Included with the car are the two sets of original keys and original owner's manual.

In preparing this car several hard decisions were made, if I've erred, it would be on the side of originality. (See Pictures to view the following details)  The detail process was limited to cleaning only, nothing has been repainted and nothing replaced with new parts to dress it up or make it appear like new. The paint was very nice, but needed buffing to removed some oxidation, tree sap and bird droppings. Knowing that even the most skillful buffing would produce some thin spots I elected to have it buffed, sealed and hand waxed.  The result is an incredibly lustrous deep finish, but there is now some thin paint along the top gutters where rust stains were removed and a stain that couldn't be removed on side of the top below the emblem and 3 spots on the hood where bird droppings were removed.  There is also a buffer burn between the chrome trim and hood on the right nose of the car.  All of these flaws are easily spotted in, but I want that to be the buyer's decision.  In addition there is a 3" cut on the side of the driver's seat and cracks in the dash at each of the 4 corners of the speaker.  Both the driver's and passenger's door panels have cracks also.  While the carpets are practically free of wear, they have faded in spots. The hood insulation was tattered so subsequently removed.  The trunk lining is a cardboard product and is heavily damaged on it's base and somewhat warped on the right horizontal.  Both reproduction hood insulation and trunk lining are readily available, but again, I want that to be the buyer's decision.  2 of the 4 hubcaps are in very condition and the other two are good but have a few small dents, minor rust and discoloration.  All 4 of the hubcap's painted surfaces are faded.   There are 3 pieces of chrome interior trim surrounding the top and sides of the windshield that are deeply pitted.  All of these issues are easily repaired or replaced, but as I have stated several times before I felt it should be the buyer's decision.  My mantra is "They're only original once!"

Ford to auction Mustang Cobra Jet prototype for charity [w/video]

Mon, 16 Sep 2013

Prototypes developed by major automakers typically remain in said company's custody, but every once in a while, one trickles out into private hands. And that's just what we have here. Ford is donating a one-of-a-kind factory prototype for the 2014 Mustang Cobra Jet that will be auctioned off later this month by Barrett-Jackson in Las Vegas to benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Powered by a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 mated to a T4 competition gearbox, this rare Cobra Jet prototype includes a wheelie bar, chromoly roll cage, Weld wheels, three-link rear suspension, racing brakes, 9-inch rear axle and more. It's painted in a unique satin orange with reflective gray striping scheme, bears the serial number 2014 BJMS CJXX1 and is fully ready for NHRA competition on the drag strip.
To be offered with no reserve on Saturday, September 28, 2013, the Cobra Jet prototype's winning bidder will also receive tutelage at Roy Hill's Drag Racing School in Sophia, NC, along with tours of the Ford Product Development Center, Ford Racing headquarters and Ford Design Studios with Mustang chief engineer Dave Pericak. Scope out the video and details below for what could be the ultimate Mustang experience for a good cause.

Ford Transit production fires up, American Pickers among first takers

Wed, 30 Apr 2014

Not long ago, the History Channel showed a seemingly unending stream of World War II documentaries, but it made a switch a few years ago to include an increasing mix of 'reality' programming. American Pickers was one of the early attempts at this new formula, with cameras following hosts Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz around the country in a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter as they tracked down collectibles and "rusty gold" for their Iowa shop, Antique Archeology. The show has since gone on to become one of the channel's most popular programs.
Starting in the new episode airing tonight, the affable hosts will swap their Benz for a 2015 Ford Transit, a nicely timed bit of marketing to coincide with the launch of the model's assembly at the Blue Oval's Kansas City Assembly Plant, which also kicks off this week. Ford is touting 2,000 new jobs created as part of its $1.1-billion investment in the plant.
No strangers to product placement, the guys from American Pickers say their switch away from the Sprinter is because they wanted to balance cargo capacity and fuel economy to make the most of their cross-country jaunts. They opted for the largest Transit available with a long wheelbase, extended body and high roof, giving them 487 cubic feet of cargo room. Hauling power comes from a 3.2-liter, five-cylinder diesel engine with 190 horsepower and 346 pound-feet of torque and a six-speed automatic transmission with rear-wheel drive. Fittingly, the van wears the same Antique Archaeology logo over white paint as their old Sprinter.

Has the 2015 Ford Mustang gained hundreds of pounds?

Sun, 01 Jun 2014

Automakers face competing interests when it comes to developing a new generation of vehicle. On the one hand, companies want to build their cars to be safer and better handling, with more equipment and maybe even larger dimensions over the model it's replacing. On the other hand, they strive to keep weight down to the benefit of both performance and fuel consumption. Usually something has to give, and in the case of the new 2015 Ford Mustang, those efforts may have resulted in a weight penalty of two or three hundred pounds.
This according to Blue Oval modifier Steeda Autosports, which states that "the 2015 Mustang ended up gaining 200-300 pounds in this remake". Despite the Mustang not being on the market yet, it would appear the leading Ford aftermarketer has been given early access to the 2015 model to help jumpstart its tuning efforts (a rather common development among trusted tuners). If Steeda's assertion is accurate, that would make the challenge of getting the new pony car up to speed for both Ford and aftermarket customizers like Steeda that much greater.
We're waiting for official word from Ford on the veracity of Steeda's claim, but if true, it's bound to be a bit of disappointing news for legions of Blue Oval performance enthusiasts. Watch this space for more.
