The new KR, like the original, is essentially a GT500 that's spent another hour or two swimming in the testosterone pool. The supercharged V-8 benefits from a new cold-air intake and a Ford Racing low-restriction exhaust. "We also tweaked the spark maps a bit," says Jamal Hameedi, SVT chief nameplate engineer. "Life is great with forced induction, because small spark changes bring big power increases." With no change in boost pressure, output is bumped to a target of 540 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque, up from 500 horses and 480 pound-feet for the GT500. A six-speed manual will remain the standard and only transmission, the ceramic-metallic twin-disc clutch already rated to handle additional power (once in the hands of owners, few GT500s, Hameedi notes, remain at 500 horsepower for long). Still, the KR will get a new, lower 3.73 rear axle (versus the GT500's 3.31), which with the additional ponies should improve acceleration significantly (expect the KR to rocket from 0 to 60 mph in about four seconds flat or less-Z06 territory).
The basic suspension will carry over from the GT500, albeit with stiffer springs and shocks, thicker anti-roll bars, and a brace across the front strut towers. "On the KR we're willing to trade ride comfort for enhanced body control and sharper turn-in," says Hameedi. In addition, ride height may be lowered slightly. "We're still finalizing the setup," says Gary Patterson (who, along with Ford engineers, will be wringing out KR prototypes at Las Vegas Speedway in the months ahead). The GT500's standard Brembo brakes also will serve in the KR, their performance enhanced via chrome-ringed front brake ducts. The production KR will ride on new 18-inch wheels supplied by Alcoa (the show car is wearing 20s).Inside, the KR will be dressed as you'd expect a Shelby special to be: "Shelby"-embossed headrests, special graphics, logo floormats, "40th Anniversary" dash plate. The KR will also get a short-throw shift lever.Exterior changes are more significant, the most obvious being the two hood pins and that large, functional hood scoop. "The GT500 has an aluminum hood, but for the KR we're looking at an all-new hood in carbon fiber," says Hameedi. "Yes, it's expensive, but this is a special car." The KR will also get a carbon-fiber front splitter, which Hameedi notes reduces frontal lift at speed.
Buyers will order the KR through Ford dealerships. The cars will begin life as GT500s (though with the lower 3.73:1 rear axle and short-throw shifter factory-installed) before being shipped to Shelby's Las Vegas facility for engine and other mods. Ford and Shelby will build just 1000 examples. The GT500KR is still too far off for final pricing, but given its fancy carbon-fiber body pieces and other refinements, it's a safe bet that it'll start in the mid-$65K range. (GT500 owners will be delighted to know that Shelby will also offer many of the KR's upgrades in aftermarket kit form.)Naturally, we'll have test numbers for you the moment a production GT500KR is available. But why wait? It's already clear this new limited-edition Shelby will be the quickest productionMustang of all time.

Oprah at it again, gives car away on Jimmy Kimmel Live!
Sat, 17 Aug 2013Oprah Winfrey loves giving away cars. Not only has she given Pontiac G6 sedans and Volkswagen Beetle retro-mobiles to everyone in the audience of her past show, but the other night on Jimmy Kimmel Live! she gave another car away to one lucky audience member, while yelling her now-famous line: "You get a car!"
Although the acting of Oprah and Jimmy Kimmel was obviously staged for this giveaway, the reaction from the woman in the audience was genuine shock as she found out that she had just won a new Ford Fusion Energi. Congrats!
Not to take away from what Oprah and Jimmy pulled off, but our cynical sides have to wonder if there isn't more than just a little coincidence that this giveaway took place on the same day that Ford announced a fuel economy reduction for the C-Max hybrid. You be the judge... Scroll down to watch the short clip from the episode.
Hennessey unleashes 2015 HPE700 supercharged Ford Mustang
Sun, 05 Oct 2014Thanks to the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat there is a new magic number in the muscle car world - 707. To raise eyebrows these days in the power war, a vehicle needs to match or preferably exceed that palindromic figure. The tuners over at Hennessey took a look at it for their 2015 HPE700 Mustang and decided to go one better. Well, ten actually, because they bestowed their latest creation with 717 horsepower and 632 pound-feet of torque.
The HPE 700 Mustang takes the standard Mustang GT with its 5.0-liter V8 and turns up the power a few hundred notches with a Roots-type supercharger running at 7.25 psi. Hennessey claims that this boosted 'Stang can rocket to 60 miles per hour in about 3.6 seconds and cover the quarter-mile in 11.2 seconds at 131 mph. For those keeping score at home, those figures are very similar to Challenger Hellcat.
To cope with all of the added boost, the engine gets a high-flow throttle body, upgraded injectors, new fuel pump, stainless steel exhaust and Hennessey's calibration for the engine management. Pricing for the package is $59,500, including the base 2015 Mustang GT, but the company is limiting production to 500 units for the 2015 model year. Founder John Hennessey told Autoblog that he has already received about a dozen orders for them.
Ford Mondeo classes up with premium Vignale trim
Wed, 11 Sep 2013Back in the day, Vignale was a carrozzeria of the highest order, alongside the likes of Pininfarina, Bertone and Zagato. But like Giugiaro-ItalDesign and Ghia, it has since been subsumed into a larger auto group. Ford ended up with it under its umbrella when it took over De Tomaso, and has since used the moniker for a number of concept cars. Now the name is back in the form of a new upscale sub-brand for the European market.
The first new model to receive the Vignale treatment is the Mondeo, which Ford unveiled here at the Frankfurt Motor Show in both sedan and wagon forms. Positioned above the Titanium trim, the Vignale model gets such special touches as chrome trim and a quilted leather interior, Vignale badges replacing any mention of the Mondeo on which it's based. It also gains an ownership experience - including free car washes for life! - to befit the upscale positioning.
Under the bright spotlights above the show floor, the Nocciola metallic brown paint might not be the most photogenic, but will likely give the Vignale edition a more premium look when it hits European dealers and roads in 2015. Whether it'll be worth however much Ford asks for it, however, remains to be seen. Scroll down below for the official press release.
