OTHER DETAILS:

I got this car in a trade a while back. The drivers door was in the trunk because the previous owner backed into a tree with the door open. Sheared off the hinges clean. I replaced the fender and door hinges and had the door repaired prior to paint. The replacement fender was also Wimbledon white. I also still have the original fender that is repairable if you want it. Other than that the body was nearly perfect, with no real dents, or any rust anywhere. I replaced the dash gauge cap with a nice used one. However, it was from Canada, and unknown to me, it is slightly different from the original. It mounts exactly the same and looks correct, but there is a gap on the right side between it and the dash. I Have A Dash Cover To Cover It Up. I still have the original if you want it, but like most, it is badly sun beaten and cracked. Even though I replaced the brakes, master cylinder and brake booster, the brakes still need some final adjustment that is beyond my knowledge and abilities. I also rebuilt the carburetor, but again it needs final adjustment that I am unable to do myself. Both bumpers have slight damage, but no rust. Front is worse than the back.

Ford pits Cobra Jet versus GRC Fiesta ST, worlds collide

Thu, 31 Oct 2013

Racing takes on many forms in the automotive world. There are sanctioned events that are as varied and diverse as NASCAR, Formula One, Global Rallycross and drag racing, and to be good enough to win competitively in one discipline, you need to have a specialized vehicle. Or do you?
Ford decided to find out what would happen when its Global Rallycross Fiesta ST, driven by Tanner Foust, lined up against its Mustang Cobra Jet drag racer, driven by Roy Hill. In one lane, Tanner has just 2.0 liters of displacement to work with, while Roy has more than double that, at 5.0 liters. Evening the playing field a bit, Tanner has a massive turbocharger and all-wheel drive; Roy has to filter all his supercharged power through the rear wheels only.
So, who wins? We suggest you see for yourself in the press release and video below. And we're holding out hope that Tanner's challenge at the end results in another video from Ford Racing...

Nuclear-powered concept cars from the Atomic Age

Thu, 17 Jul 2014

In the 1950s and early 60s, the dawn of nuclear power was supposed to lead to a limitless consumer culture, a world of flying cars and autonomous kitchens all powered by clean energy. In Europe, it offered the then-limping continent a cheap, inexhaustible supply of power after years of rationing and infrastructure damage brought on by two World Wars.
The development of nuclear-powered submarines and ships during the 1940s and 50s led car designers to begin conceptualizing atomic vehicles. Fueled by a consistent reaction, these cars would theoretically produce no harmful byproducts and rarely need to refuel. Combining these vehicles with the new interstate system presented amazing potential for American mobility.
But the fantasy soon faded. There were just too many problems with the realities of nuclear power. For starters, the powerplant would be too small to attain a reaction unless the car contained weapons-grade atomic materials. Doing so would mean every fender-bender could result in a minor nuclear holocaust. Additionally, many of the designers assumed a lightweight shielding material or even forcefields would eventually be invented (they still haven't) to protect passengers from harmful radiation. Analyses of the atomic car concept at the time determined that a 50-ton lead barrier would be necessary to prevent exposure.
