Up for auction is a 99 Dodge Ram Van 1500 5.2L V-8. Runs strong and has a rebuilt 4sp automatic transmission that was rebuilt  3 months ago at the local Dodge dealership. The front end suspension and rear brakes were rebuilt by the dealership also within the last year, plus a thorough alignment was done. The brake proportioning valve was also replaced there too. The air conditioning blows cold and has worked well ever since I bought it. Being a black vehicle that is a nice feature to have during our Georgia summers! I switched out the doors with those from a conversion van so that I could have the power windows and power mirrors. I didn't get the power locks installed since it would require the whole keyless entry setup to work, but the power mirrors are great for checking blind spots while being able to adjust them down to avoid headlight glare from behind. I still have the original non-power doors and can include them too if you like.

The cruise control and all accessories work fine, title in hand and it passes local Georgia emissions, plus it has new plugs, wires and battery. The tires are a year and a half old and are at least %75 tread left, plus they've just been rotated. Safety cage installed and the blanket across it cuts down on the road noise, plus helps the AC and heat work better. The body is in good rust free shape, though its seen plenty of dents and scratches. It was originally built with the rear window delete and black paint option, the windowless feature was helpful for me as I used it at my last job as an aircraft mechanic supporting the National Guard. We often had to drive expensive parts and equipment across several states to fix the airplanes and it was helpful not to have any windows to show what we were hauling. Having the air conditioning, the stereo and the cruise control helped a lot on those long road trips.

The issues I didn't get around to fixing are; it still has a small oil leak from under the distributor seal, the windshield is cracked and there is a new sliding door skin where a past owner was hit in the side, and lots of little dents and scratches, and worn seats. Mileage reads about 233343 but was registered as exempt when I bought it so it may be inaccurate. Sometimes in stop and go traffic the brakes shudder a bit. This happened after they were rebuilt and the drums were replaced, but the faulty proportioning valve caused them to overheat and they warped slightly. The valve was replaced and the drums resurfaced but since they are new, I didn't feel the need to replace them.

Now that the program has ended and our site closed, I no longer need a vehicle like this and I bought a pickup truck that can carry my whole family. I spent a lot of money to fix up this van mechanically so there wasn't anything left over to improve its looks. This truck looks beat up and wont win any beauty contests, but it will make a comfortable and reliable workhorse for someone.

Top torque-to-weight ratios under $100k, $50k and $25k

Tue, 07 Oct 2014

Horsepower may steal a lot of headlines, but the always-more-complex torque figure is often a critical one for both the workingman and the motoring playboy. The measure of rotational force represents the twist that can liquefy one's tires or haul one's horse trailer. Good stuff.
It follows then, that as with the horsepower-to-weight list that we assembled for you a few months ago, a list of cars that offer the most pound-feet with the fewest pounds to carry, is an interesting one to break down. Sure, there's a big difference in how the torque is applied from a turbocharged six-cylinder in a Swedish luxury sedan and a massive heavy-duty truck's turbo-diesel. But being the car/stat geeks that we are, we think it's kinda neat that those two vehicles rank near each other where torque and weight intersect.
As with the horsepower list, we've given you figures as pounds per every one pound-foot. Again broken down into broad price categories, we've got a mixed bag of 2014 and 2015 models here, too. Every effort has been made to select the most up-to-date prices and specs, and we've also to omitted some '14 cars that won't be re-upped after the ongoing yearly changeover.

Chrysler killing off the 200 Convertible, Dodge Avenger

Sun, 23 Feb 2014

When Chrysler rolled out the first-generation 200 to replace the Sebring range in 2010, it included replacements for both the sedan and the convertible. The Sebring Coupe, however, was left out of the mix. And now that the second-generation Chrysler 200 is descending upon us, Auburn Hills is paring things down even further. But this time, it's the convertible that reportedly isn't making the cut. Shame, too, since the rendering above shows what could have been quite an attractive droptop.
As our compatriots at Edmunds point out, sales of the convertible model accounted for less than five percent of overall Chrysler 200 sales, and at those numbers, the considerable cost of engineering a new drop-top couldn't be justified. With the Toyota Camry Solara and Volkswagen Eos also gone from the market (well, the VW isn't gone quite yet), the discontinuation of the Chrysler 200 Convertible leaves the affordable convertible segment largely to the sportier likes of the Ford Mustang and Chevy Camaro and smaller European offerings like the Mini Cooper and VW Beetle.
The Chrysler 200 Convertible isn't the only derivative being left behind with the new model: so too is the Dodge Avenger. That will leave a glaring hole in the Dodge lineup, with nothing to bridge the gap between the compact Dart and the larger Charger. Whether the Dodge brand has any plans to replace the Avenger with another model, not to be based on the 200, remains to be seen.

QB says University of Alabama offered him a Corvette to play football

Fri, 16 May 2014

The University of Alabama Crimson Tide football team could be in some hot water, following a pair of posts on social media.
The first post was sure to raise a few eyebrows on its own. It's an Instagram of sophomore running back Derrick Henry standing in front of his new Dodge Challenger (we're guessing it's an R/T based on the fender stripes). Complete with a custom set of wheels, the image was enough to trigger more than a few questions about where an unemployed student-athlete came up with the money for such a purchase. Now, this could be harmless. Henry, flush with a full-ride to Bama could have convinced his parents to get him something nice with his college fund.
The second post, though, is a straight-up accusation. It comes from former West Virginia Mountaineer and current CFL quarterback Pat White, who posted the following on his Facebook page.
