1977 Chrysler New Yorker. 40,140 mile Survivor. 100% original paint in magnificent condition. All chrome and trim magnificent. Zero rust, including under vinyl top. Interior impeccable. Great color combo, no ugly belt molding. This is the one you want. 440-4bbl runs smooth and strong and quiet, you forget it's running, but it has that unique Thermoquad sound when the secondary valves open. Rebuilt and re-cored original radiator about 400 miles ago, installed 3 row in place of the original 2 row. A/C blows cold, R134a conversion. Flushed system, replaced compressor, dryer, expansion valve, and O-rings. Replaced valve cover gaskets. Wheel bearings freshly packed. Original undercoating. Burgundy cloth interior immaculate, drive it anyplace in comfort. Window gaskets and weather stripping are great, car is very quiet inside when all four windows are up, no howling or wind noise. All emissions equipment still in place for those in California or other places where it matters. Wipers work and park, washer fluid squirts from wiper arms like it should. Car starts like it should no matter how hot or cold out. Power seat works, fender mounted signals work, hazards, brake lights, everything. Current Virginia inspection. Runs drives and stops like a 40,000 mile car should. Wear points like driver's armrest aren't worn. Headliner is perfect. Washer and overflow bottle under the hood are not discolored. Car is flat out magnificent and it might easier to discuss the few details that are not. The only thing that doesn't work is the 8-track deck, it might need a belt. AM FM radio works fine on all four original speakers. The front passenger's door doesn't lock, I'm pretty certain the plunger linkage is just a little bent inside. The plunger probably got snagged on a coat or something at some point since 1977. The door closes and latches fine. I didn't want to disassemble the mint door panel to fix it since you damage that pressboard material a tiny bit each time no matter how careful you are and I don't leave the car alone or in places I'd feel the need to lock it. Very top of back seat cloth is slightly faded. Tiny hairline cracks in steering wheel by spokes, but you won't find a better one, see pic. One flaw in driver's door pull. See pic. This is how a 40,000 mile original should be, and you won't be disappointed. Please contact me to ask about anything you'd like. Chrysler defies NHTSA, says it won't recall 2.7M Jeep Grand Cherokee, Liberty models
Wed, 05 Jun 2013Facing a possible recall totaling around 2.7 million of its most popular SUVs, Chrysler remains insistent that the 1993-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2002-2007 Jeep Liberty are safe vehicles. This comes on the heels of a recall request from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for these two models due to fuel tanks mounted behind the rear axle, which could possibly be ruptured during severe rear-end collisions, leading to an increased risk of fire. In response to the allegations, Chrysler says that it does not agree with NHTSA nor does it plan on recalling either vehicle.
Chrysler said both SUVs "met and exceeded" the requirements for fuel-system integrity, and cooperated fully with NHTSA since the investigation was opened in 2010. While 15 deaths and 46 injuries have been reported from fires caused by rear-end collisions on these models, Chrysler is claiming that the vast majority of incidents cited by NHTSA were "high-energy crashes," including one where a stopped Grand Cherokee was rear-ended by a tractor trailer going 65 miles per hour.
The automaker wraps up by saying "NHTSA seems to be holding Chrysler Group to a new standard for fuel tank integrity that does not exist now and did not exist when the Jeep vehicles were manufactured." Ford tumbles to second worst in Consumer Reports reliability survey, list dominated by Japanese [w/video]
Mon, 29 Oct 2012It's no secret that MyFord Touch has had its share of problems since being introduced, but the most recent reliability survey from Consumer Reports shows just how much this infotainment system has affected Ford. Just two years ago, the automaker was in the top 10 for the institute's reliability rankings, but since then, it has tumbled to the second-lowest rung just above dead-last Jaguar. In addition to MyFord Touch, CR also attributes a handful of new products that have had issues right out of the gate.
Compiled from 1.2 million subscriber surveys, this year's auto reliability survey heavily favors Japanese automakers, with eight of the 10 spots hailing from Japan. Toyota brands grabbed the top three spots (Scion, Toyota and Lexus - in that order) with Mazda, Subaru, Honda and Acura filling the next four spots. The only non-Asian automaker cracking the top 10 was Audi at number eight.
Audi climbed a total of 18 spots from last year, and Cadillac and GMC round out this year's top gainers breaking into the top 15. Helping Cadillac's upward movement, the CTS Coupe was named the most reliable domestic car. Lincoln, Volvo and Chrysler join Ford on this year's biggest loser list.
Did a US automaker blow the whistle on Hyundai, Kia fuel economy issue?
Mon, 17 Dec 2012In all of the most hotly contested mainstream segments of the motoring universe, the difference of one mile per gallon averaged on a widow sticker can mean the difference between a sale and a walk-off - to say nothing of two or three mpg. So, when Hyundai and Kia were forced to reveal that many of their 40-mpg ratings were actually 38s and 37s, well, it made for big news.
It also, conceivably, made for a competitive disadvantage immediately, when the Korean automakers' products were being shopped versus the guys down the block. And it's that disadvantage that makes a recent story from Automotive News so juicy.
AN is reporting that Margo Oge, former head of the Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Transportation and Air Quality, got a tip in 2010 that Hyundai/Kia were "cheating" to get its impressive fuel economy numbers. The tip, said Oge (who retired from the EPA this past September), came from a senior vice president from a domestic automaker. The source was credible enough for Oge to launch an audit of the Hyundai figures, which ultimately lead to the debacle that we reported on a few months ago, and that the Korean company has been trying to bounce back from ever since.
