1954 5 Window 3100 truck. This truck is in great shape. I have had it for 2 years and did everything I thought it should have to restore it to its original character. This has the original engine and most importantly the original 2 tone deluxe blue interior cab. The 2 tone deluxe interior was an upgrade in 1954 and this interior is very rare -- see the original Chevy brochure in the photos. I only know of a few other trucks with the original interior 2 tone deluxe paint.

The engine runs great. I have had two mechanics review the truck for all mechanical issues and none were found. This still has the original 6V system, which hold a full charge and never had any issues.

The bed is sealed IPE, a Brazilian hardwood, which is dense and has the luster of mahogany. All chrome on the truck is in great shape.

The truck comes with an original period correct fire extinguisher, to be located and installed by the next Owner. It also includes a cab visor which I removed because I liked the look of the truck without the visor better.

Here is a list of the items I tackled. Everything is documented with photos and receipts.

• New kingpins
• New fuel pump
• New heater and radiator hoses. All nuts and bolts used in my part of the restoration are stainless steel.
• New brake lines -- current drum brakes work extremely well.
• Restored original AM radio (rare) now gets AM, FM and can plug into a device like an IPhone
• New door windlace (be happy I did that -- it is not a fun task)
• Reconditioned the vacuum wiper control
• New speedometer
• New speedometer cable
• New cross sills and rear cross sill
• New stainless steel bed strips
• New neoprene tailgate trunion. Neoprene makes the tailgate operation almost silent as opposed to the metal trunions.
• Re-wired the rear lights and blinkers (all electric items on the truck work)
• New rear tail light chrome wire loom.
• Complete cleaning of the frame under the bed with primer and three coats of black satin paint.
• Restored Harrison heater / defroster
• New radial tires -- makes an incredible difference in driving
• New cowl vent gasket
• New passenger side window weather-stripping, cat whiskers and vent window gaskets
• New driver's side and passenger side seat belts
• Removed, cleaned, primed and under-coated each rear fender.
• Installed fender welt on the rear fenders
• Sourced and installed the proper under-bed tire carrier (rare)
• Currently priming and painting both bed side splash fenders. All parts sandblasted first.

Here's what I might do if I keep the truck:
• Install the driver's side door window weather-stripping (I have the kit and will include it with the truck)
• Remove, clean and paint the underside of the running boards
• Remove, clean, prime and under-coat each front fender.
• Install fender welt on the front fenders
• Adjust the parking brake
• Wash, wax and drive the truck as much as possible. There is really not much left except take care of this easy to drive and reliable truck.

This truck needs to go to someone who understands the legacy of these trucks and the value of preserving the history of this specific vehicle. This is a one-of-a-kind daily driver.

GM recalls 8,500 Chevrolet Malibu models for rear suspension glitch

Mon, 04 Feb 2013

According to a letter from General Motors to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, flaws in the build process of the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu have led to the recall of 8,519 cars. Units built between December 6, 2011 and January 15, 2013 may have been assembled with rear suspension cradles that had insufficient torque applied to certain bolts. That out-of-spec assembly could lead to issues ranging from slight noises to a loss of vehicle control.
The problem was first noticed in December of last year by a GM test fleet driver and eventually tracked back to the improperly torqued bolts on the suspension cradle assembled through July 2012 by a supplier located not too far from the Malibu's Detroit/Hamtramck Assembly Plant. Since an official NHTSA recall notice has not been issued yet, it isn't clear whether or not Detroit-built Malibus were the only ones affected (the 2013 Malibu is also built at GM's Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas City, Kansas). Dealers will fix the problem by inspecting vehicles for proper torque specs, retightening if not within specs and, in some cases, perform a rear-wheel alignment.

GM applies for LT5, LTX trademarks... are new small block variants coming?

Mon, 29 Apr 2013

Recently discovered General Motors trademark applications for LT4, LT5, LT88 and LTX have observers wondering what kind of high-performance offerings could be on their way. A new LT4 would mark a return of the engine designation first used on the Corvette Grand Sport, SLP Pontiac Firehawk and SLP Chevrolet Camaro SS from 1996 and 1997. Supposition at Corvette Forum - which provided advance intel on the C7 like these leaked images - believes a new LT4 could go into the high-performance trim of the next-gen, 2015 Camaro that would be more powerful than the 580-horsepower Camaro ZL1.
Seeing an LT5 again would also be déjà vu - in its former life it was a 5.7-liter V8 for the C4 Corvette ZR-1 from 1990-1994 designed by Lotus, producing from 370 hp to 405 hp. A mix of rumor and hope is that the new LT5 will be a supercharged evolution of the 6.2-liter LT1 (pictured) placed in the new C7 Corvette, and that it will go into the C7 version of the ZR1 pumping out something like 700 hp.
The LTX trademark is, as with that last letter, a complete mystery. If the "X" isn't a generic way to denote the whole LT family, it's wondered if it LTX could refer to a crate motor offering like the LSX.

2014 Chevy Cruze Diesel arrives with 42 mpg for $25,695*

Thu, 07 Feb 2013

The last time General Motors had a diesel passenger car in the US, it was the 1.8-liter 1986 Chevette. At the 2013 Chicago Auto Show today, GM is unveiling the much-anticipated 2014 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel. The compact bows with a 2.0-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine that boasts 148 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, with full twist coming on at just 2,000 rpm. What's more, the common-rail, direct-injection diesel features an overboost function that allows the engine to deliver up to 280 lb-ft of torque for 10 seconds at a time. Even with 10 more horsepower and 110 more pound-feet of torque than the available turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder in the Cruze, the 2.0-liter diesel engine can return up to 42 mpg (highway) bolted to its six-speed automatic transmission.
If you're counting, that figure meets the less powerful Cruze Eco with a six-speed manual transmission. More importantly, the auto transmission Cruze Diesel matches its main competition, the Volkswagen Jetta TDI, in highway fuel economy. The Cruze 2.0 TD (as it will be badged) can also handle up to 20 percent biodiesel (B20), whereas the Jetta is rated only for B5. General Motors has not released city fuel economy for its newest diesel, but we do know how much it will cost you to jump behind the driver's seat.
GM will kindly ask for $25,695, plus an $810 destination fee. That marks a $2,115 premium over a loaded Cruze LTZ Auto and $2,640 more than the Jetta TDI, though the MSRP will net you a leather interior, 17-inch alloy wheels and an Aero Performance Package, as well as a two-year maintenance plan and five-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty. Compared to the gas-powered Cruze, you also lose a couple cubic feet of rear cargo space thanks to a 17-liter diesel emission fluid tank. That urea fluid, which helps put the clean in clean diesel, will need to be refilled at least every 10,000 miles.
