1986 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Base Coupe 2-door 5.0l on 2040-cars

OK, up for sale is my 1986 Monte Carlo. Originally purchased this last year as a project for my son and I, but alas, money and time got in the way.
Bad news first:
  • The original carburetor (Rochester Quadrajet) was replaced by the original seller to an Edelbrock Performer. Edelbrock works fine but since it is not connected to the ECM, the timing keeps advancing and it is nearly impossible to get her running smoothly.
  • Landau top needs to either be deleted or repaired
  • The interior of the car needs help (interior door panel on passenger side is detached, have most parts for it. Dash pad is cracked. Gauges work fine. Seats are solid but dirty)
  • Exterior of the car - paint is there but most likely it was a cheap Maaco paint job as some parts are visible and the original cream color of the car can be seen in the jambs and stuff.
  • Body - panels are solid, front end needs to be shimmed and aligned properly. Bondo on Passenger door by mirror and bondo on left fender. Couple of small rust spots that can be ground out and filled (nothing through the panels)
  • Exhaust - leak in the exhaust, needs replacement.

Good news time:
  • Windshield is brand new, replaced by Safelite last summer
  • She starts up well and idles well but then once she reaches temp, starts to run too rich.
  • Tires are good
  • No rust in the trunk
  • Overall good condition, just needs someone who knows what they are doing to have this car - NOT me. :-)

I am including a bunch of body parts:
  • Two front fenders from an SS (I think it was an 86 or 87)
  • Two doors (rusted bottoms but complete interiors) from same donor SS
  • Hood
  • Trunk
  • Front clip and lights assembly from the SS

Additionally, I am also including the following parts:

  • Rebuilt Rochester Quadrajet E4ME (From Mountain Man carbs - HIGHLY rated) (300 bucks)
  • Replacement headliner and visors from Mike's Montes and replacement radiator overflow tank (300 bucks)
  • MSD Pro-Billet RTR Distributor for Small Block Chevy (from Summit, $289)
  • MSD Coil Blaster for RTR Distributor ($50)
  • Street Fire spark plug wires (Summit, $40)
  • LH and RH Exhaust manifolds (Summit, $225)
  • Set of Autolite Xtreme Performance plugs (Summit, $60)
  • Additional parts and pieces from the donor car (some interior parts, Chrome dressup kit, hood hinge, wiring harness for lights, etc.)

If you can do body work and minor mechanical stuff, you can have a sweet ride in no time. I don't do any body work so I'd lose a ton of money paying someone to do it.

Heck, you could part this out to the Monte Carlo community and make twice my asking price back - I just need to get it out of here and don't have the time to take this project to completion. By my estimate, it's pretty darn close and is still unmolested enough that you could make a really sweet ride out of it. She drives, shifts, brakes, and steers fine. Just wouldn't recommend taking her long distance until the timing issue is worked out and the exhaust leak is fixed.

Parts and car alone totalled me over 4000... you have 1300 bucks in unused parts also included that you could either use or resell. She's got great potential, I just don't have the time. Son needs a reliable car NOW and really doesn't have the interest in this project that I hoped he would.

NOW - for the legalistic stuff:

  1. If you commit to buy, it is committing to buy - NOT committing to come over and inspect and kick the tires. I have described everything to my best ability and am always available via email or eBay messages to answer any questions, take additional pictures, etc.
  2. If you purchase, I need 500 down and the remainder within one week. Car needs to be picked up within one week of the close of sale. I will not arrange shipping, I do not have a trailer. I *will* however, help load it up.
  3. Car is sold as is, where is, no warranties expressed or implied; no returns.

Next Corvette ZR1 to get 700 horsepower?

Tue, 19 Feb 2013

Word has it General Motors may offer as much as 700 horsepower in the C7 Corvette ZR1. Motor Trend reports the next Corvette Z06 will continue to rely on its naturally aspirated 7.0-liter V8 engine for thrust, but the lump will deliver substantially more power. How much more? MT says the engine could deliver up to 600 ponies. That's a jump of 95 horsepower over the current Z06, though no figures have been finalized as of yet. Right now, GM is reportedly waiting to see what sort of grunt it can glean from the next ZR1.
The automaker has already made it clear it will resurrect the LT5 name for the new supercharged V8, and if GM is already pulling 600 from the Z06, the big dog ZR1 would theoretically offer 700 horsepower. Either way, the range-topping Corvette will be suitably insulated from its less potent siblings. Stay tuned. We aren't likely to see the Z06 for at least a year, with the ZR1 trailing along at some point there after.

Who sold the most heavy-duty pickups in 2012? PickupTrucks.com investigates

Tue, 26 Feb 2013

Domestic manufacturers enjoyed a good year for heavy-duty pickup sales in 2012. PickupTrucks.com has taken a close look at exactly how those sales broke down between each manufacturer and between three-quarter and one-ton pickups. Ford sold some 67,786 F-250 Super Duty models last year with the Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD falling just behind at 56,359 units. The Ram 2500 HD came in third at 41,918, while the GMC Sierra 2500 HD earned itself fourth place with 27,616 deliveries. While Ford held onto the top spot in the one-ton market, Ram easily nailed down second place by selling more 3500 HD models last year than General Motors sold Silverado 3500 HD and Sierra 3500 HD trucks combined.
So, did GM manage to sell more trucks than Ford with its two brands? Very nearly. Ford sold a total of 119,338 heavy-duty pickups to GM's 111,555. Ram, meanwhile, moved a distant 77,583. But perhaps more interesting is the diesel take rate in this segment. PickupTrucks.com says 80 percent of all domestic one-ton trucks roll from the dealer lot with a turbo-diesel under the hood. Head over to the site for a closer look at the breakdown.

Corvette Stingray Shooting Brake under consideration by Callaway [w/poll]

Mon, 18 Mar 2013

Callaway has released a few renderings of a design study for a shooting brake version of the C7 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. The company says it wants to create a long-roof version of America's sports car to offer buyers more interior room and a vehicle with "unique style." The company says it will use structural carbon fiber for the new body bits, which suggests the conversion shouldn't add too much more weight to the Corvette. Along with a few mechanical tweaks, the Callaway Corvette Stingray AeroWagon could breeze past the 200 miles per hour barrier.
Provided that they get enough interest, Callaway estimates they will be able to effect the changes on the Chevrolet for around $15,000, and says the conversion work should be available through its network of dealers. You can check out the brief press release below for more information, or head over to the Callaway site to plunk down a deposit - but before you do, we want to know... do you find this C7 wagon interesting?
