Rare RPO, Kansas City built 1966 El Camino with a VIN matching EF 396-360hp, VIN matching Muncie M-20 4-speed and a code CF 12 bolt 3.31 ratio positraction rear. The original 396 was rebuilt less than 5000 miles ago with .030” over forged TRW pistons, Competition Cams 292H camshaft kit and reconditioned connecting rods with hardened bolts, the original forged crankshaft needed nothing, was polished and left std-std. The cylinder heads received hardened valve seats, 2.19 and 1.88 stainless valves and new bronze guides. An Edelbrock Performer RPM intake was installed in place of the original GM Holley cast iron intake (included) with a new Holley 4777 650 Double Pumper carburetor. For the ignition, a Pertronix unit replaces the breaker points and for the exhaust, the original cast manifolds were put in a box (also included) and a set of custom Mickey Thompson Super Scavenger headers were installed.

During the engine rebuild, the original Muncie M-20 transmission was rebuilt with new bearings, new brass syncros, a reverse idler and a new HD clutch riding on a resurfaced flywheel. The original GM shifter was also rebuilt and re-bushed, it shifts like new.

The original CF code 12 bolt, 3.31 positraction rear differential was also reconditioned with new bearings, seals and gaskets. The front suspension and brake systems were also rebuilt at this time, it drives like new.

Even though it's and older restoration, the body, paint and chrome on this car are still in excellent condition, it's been wet once in past 20 years, sitting at a car show.

The 762 black bucket interior is in excellent condition and has center console with clock and the original and working AM/FM radio. The original tachometer stopped working at one point so a Sun Super Tach was placed in the factory location, it fits perfectly. The original 5600rpm redline tachometer and an extra console clock are also included with car.

Even though Chevrolet didn't offer an SS option for El Camino in '66, but it was entirely possible to build one at your local Chevrolet dealer. Not sure if it was possible to order an SS hood though, the car has one on it but I don't know if it's original or not. So, the hood may or may not be original.

This El Camino is for sale locally and I reserve the right to end auction at any time, thanks for looking and happy bidding!

Forgot to mention that the car also has power steering and power brakes, and that the brakes are drums, front and rear. Sorry for any confusion!

Silverado HD, Touareg V10 TDI face off in diesel tug-of-war

Sun, 30 Dec 2012

A couple weeks ago, we watched a Chevrolet Silverado get dominated by a Dodge Ram Heavy Duty in a fullsize pickup tug-of-war, but in that truck's defense, Chevy's Vortec gas engine was no match for the torquey Cummins turbo diesel. For our next round of vehicular tug-of-war, a Duramax-powered Silverado HD takes on Volkswagen Touareg V10 TDI.
Now, on paper, putting the Duramax V8's 365 horsepower and 660 pound-feet of torque up against the V10's 310 hp and 553 lb-ft looks like an easy win for the Bowtie, but unfortunately, this battle has a similar result as the Dodge versus Chevy video, with the Silverado smoking its tires trying to move forward as it gets pulled backwards. Put another way: YouTube 2, Chevy Silverado 0.
It just goes to show, though, that big tires, bolt-on fender flares and goofy smoke stacks don't improve your towing abilities. Besides, what did the Silverado driver expect when the Touareg V10 TDI has towed a Boeing 747 in the past?

Diesel Power finds the ultimate modified oil-burner

Sat, 24 Aug 2013

For nine years, Diesel Power magazine has run the Diesel Power Challenge, this year's grindfest being "a week-long torture test that features seven events, nine trucks, 8,000 horsepower, and nearly 15,000 pound-feet of torque." The road to being crowned "the most powerful truck" starts with a dyno run, and then continues through the completion of a CDL-style obstacle course, an eighth-of-a-mile drag race while towing a 10,000-pound trailer, a quarter-mile drag race without a trailer, a fuel economy test in the mountains and finally a sled-pulling test through a 300-foot-long packed-mud pit.
What kind of trucks get into such a fight? Last year's winner, for instance - who upgraded his truck this year to prove he didn't "luck into the win" - drives a 2008 Ford F-250 Super Duty with a 6.4-liter Power Stroke V8 upgraded with a custom intake, Elite Diesel triple turbos and a two-stage nitrous system. Another competitor has a 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 powered by a 5.9-liter Cummins inline-six, upgraded with Garrett turbos, dual-stage nitrous, a seven-inch exhaust stack and twin fans built into the bed to cool the Sun Coast Omega transmission. The numbers on that truck: 1,255 horsepower, and 2,063 pound-feet of torque at the wheels. Naturally, as the image above might suggest, things don't always end well.
You'll find all five videos covering this years challenge below. A scene in the dyno video sums it all up perfectly: a competitor leaves his nitrous on too long and the crew is treated to some ominous poppings, he leans out the window, throws both hands up and shouts, "Amer'ca!"

2015 Chevy Tahoe gets Police Patrol Vehicle treatment

Thu, 07 Nov 2013

That was fast. Mere days after showing a Police Concept based on the 2015 Tahoe at the SEMA Show, Chevrolet has announced that it will build a PPV model based on the SUV to do battle with the Ford Police Interceptor Utility (Explorer) and Dodge Durango Special Service.
You'll recall that the Tahoe has been police staple for several years, predating both the Explorer and Durango police variants, so the fact that the new model would spawn a police variant is hardly surprising. Like the civilian model, the 2015 PPV benefits from a more efficient 5.3-liter, direct-injection V8 that pumps out 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. It also features more high-strength steel, offering better crash protection, on top of optional safety items like lane departure warning, forward collision alert and a Safety Alert Seat.
The press release is rather light on police-specific items, aside from the auxiliary battery, which keeps the myriad of electronics in a modern police car running even when the engine isn't. Lightbars, 17-inch steel wheels on Goodyear Eagle RS-A tires and a push bar round out the mods for the Tahoe PPV. The cabin features a revised center console and room for laptop and other equipment mounts.
