1999 Doug Rippie Motorsports Built Street Legal Drag Car
I began recreational drag racing in 2002 in a 1969 Camaro.  Each year I tried to go a little faster and had a lot of success doing so.  In 2007 I decided to have Doug Rippie Motorsports build a special Corvette for me and I bought this 1999 Corvette that was really clean with 40,000 miles on it. ( If you don't know about Doug Rippie Motorsports, google them and check them out!)  I worked with Doug  to come up with a really hot Vette that was also street legal and could be driven anywhere (dry pavement helps though).  The original build sheet is in the pictures.  I lived 20 miles from the track so I drove the car, with drag slicks and a car jack in the back, to the track, changed the tires myself manually and kicked a lot of ass, changed the tires back after racing and drove home.  The car ran low 7's in the 1/8th mile and was very consistent.  However, the guys running in the 6's were really annoying so I called Doug and said I wanted to go faster, still be street legal and be able to use pump gas and drive this car around.  So in my second year with this car we supercharged it, build sheet in the pictures also.  Wow.  The Vette is at about 950 hp at the crank and somewhere around 750 at the rear wheels.  The car ran very consistently in the mid 6's with the best time being 6.420, 60' at 1.473, 108.6 mph in the 1/8th mile and can lift the front tires off the ground on launch,(see the pictures). What a ride!
Obviously traction became an issue.  I experimented with tires and finally added a traction control system that shuts down cylinders based on slippage.  That made the car much easier to handle but times were 1 to 2 tenths of a second slower than if I kept it straight without the traction control. The car was mini tubbed to allow for BFG's largest G-Force drag slicks.  I also added special shocks on the front of the car that allows the nose to lift easier.  So the traction control is still on the car and works very well and you can choose to use it or not.
In 2009 the LS7 block cracked, for a reason too hard to explain here but I'll be glad to explain in person or on the phone.  Anyway, I took it back to DRM and it was rebuilt with the LSX block, a cast iron version of the LS7 block.  It can still lift the front tires off the ground even with the additional 140 pounds on the nose and the 6.420 is a time was achieved in this configuration.
During the winter of 2010-2011 I decided to rebuild the drive train.  I moved up to the FLP (Finish Line Products) level 7 transmission, the best they build and rebuilt everything that showed any wear.  I didn't get the car back and on the track until the middle of the season and had some personal reasons that limited my racing.  I did not race this car at all in 2012.  All that being said, the car has only 5 - 10 runs on it since the drive train was rebuilt.  This car is in excellent mechanical condition and is ready for a couple of years of racing without anything being done to it.  It comes with two sets of drag slicks (MT and Hoosiers,) a rear set of BFG Drag Force radials, one set of street tires and the original rims.  It also comes with both the solid color top and the smoked glass top, a car cover and an additional torque tube.  The torque tube on the car is a beefed up version.
You can also see that the interior is all original and everything works, CD, cruise, tilt, electric seats radio whatever.
The reason I am selling it in such great condition is, like I said I didn't race in 2012, I do take it out to keep it lubricated every couple of months.  I am 62 years of age, had a great time racing but I have 3 other fun cars and am now more into cross country trips in comfortable performance cars than drag racing.  The car can be seen in Omaha, Ne. where it is currently stored.
I have lots of documentation on the car as well as Dyno records.  If you wish to inquire more about the car, feel free to call me at 712-370-0123.

800k car names trademarked globally, suddenly alphanumerics seem reasonable

Tue, 01 Oct 2013

What's in a name? This cliched phrase probably gets tossed out at every marketing meeting that happens when a new car gets its nomenclature. We know the answer, though: everything. The name of a car has all the potential to make or break it with fickle customers that are more conscious than ever about what their purchases say about them.
That's giving headaches to marketing folks across the automotive industry. "It's tough. In 1985 there were about 75,000 names trademarked in the automotive space. Today there are 800,000," Chevrolet's head of marketing, Russ Clark, told Automotive News. Infiniti's president, Johan de Nysschen, echoed Clark's sentiment, saying, "The truth of the matter is, across the world, there is hardly a name or a letter that hasn't already been claimed by one car manufacturer or another. You can go through the alphabet - A, B, C and so forth - and you will quickly see that almost all available letters are taken."
What has that left automakers to do? Get creative. In the case of Infiniti, it made the controversial move to bring all of its cars' names into a new scheme, classifying them as Q#0 for cars and QX#0 for SUVs and crossovers. So the Infiniti G, which was available as the G25 and G37, is now the Q50. The FX37 and FX50 are now the QX70.

Next-gen GM SUVs caught wearing new boxy bodies [w/video]

Wed, 15 May 2013

We recently drove the brand-new 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and found it to be vastly improved compared to the outgoing model. And now that The General's pickup trucks have been squared away, it's time to focus our attention onto their passenger-friendly companions, the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon (above).
Our spy photographers have passed along a huge smattering of photos (and a video), showing the new SUVs out testing. Both the short- and long-wheelbase models were spied, and while the overall shape of the vehicles hasn't changed all that much, we expect the updates to be substantial. In addition to new powertrain options, like GM's new small-block V8, we expect the interiors of both SUVs to get massive makeovers, providing better materials throughout their cabins and quieter, more refined environments. We even hear that some trick new suspension developments may be in store for upper-end models.
Visually, these spy shots allow us to see a couple of new details on the SUVs' front and rear fascias, including LED running lamps on the Yukon and some interesting LED taillamp treatments. Of course, the obvious third party missing from this set of photos is the Cadillac Escalade, but as we reported earlier, GM is working to further differentiate the 'Slade from the rest of the fullsize SUV lineup, and is working to make the new model "much less ostentatious."

Dodge vs. Chevy tug-of-war taken to the extreme

Mon, 17 Dec 2012

They say "idle hands are the devil's playground," but said playgrounds grow to Disney-sized proportions when a pair of jacked-up trucks, two egos, a chain and an empty mall parking lot are involved. Proof of this is the video below, which shows a Cummins-powered Dodge Ram circa 2006 to 2008 chained tail-to-tail with what looks to be a gasoline-powered Chevrolet Silverado from the late 1990s or early 2000s.
We don't necessarily have to tell you who wins this battle, but we'll let you see for yourself the lengths the "winning" driver goes to prove his point. There's plenty of foul language in the video below, so beware that this might be Not Safe For Work, and not that we should have to tell you, but please, do not try this at home.
