This is the highly desirable 1955 Chevy Bel Air, 2dr hdtp, with a stock 265 cu in motor, 2brl carb, and 2spd powerglide transmission in pristine condition. The only non-stock items are the power steering with tilt steering wheel, front disc brakes, and engine dress kit (chrome valve covers, alternator, and air cleaner). You cannot get away driving this car without noticeable glances and waves from admirers, especially from car enthusiast who know cars from the 50s and 60s. The paint is a high gloss original Turquois and white combination with only a few defects visible only on close inspection. The stock interior is in great condition with no rips/tears on the seats, door panels, or headliner and the carpets are new. All the chrome and stainless have either been redone or refurbished. The original dash is in perfect condition and the gauges all work. The car has passed Hawaii's stringent requirements for safety inspection. I'm advertising this car locally, which could terminate this auction early. The buyer is responsible for shipping to the mainland (from Hawaii, the cost is approximately $1000 to the west coast) and I will assist in prepping the car and taking it to the shipping terminal. Vert-A-Pac train cars kept your Chevy Vega's price in check
Fri, 01 Mar 2013Our apologies to those who've seen this before, but for the rest of the class, how awesome are these pictures of the Vert-A-Pac shipping system General Motors came up with to ship the Chevrolet Vega back in the 1970s? Developed along with Southern Pacific Railroad, GM was able to double the amount of Vega models it could ship by packing them into the unique storage cars vertically.
At the time, rail cars could fit 15 vehicles each, but Chevrolet was able to lower shipping costs by making it possible to ship 30 Vegas per rail car, in turn allowing the price of the Vega to remain as low as possible. Each rail car had 30 doors that would fold down so that a Vega could be strapped on, and then a forklift would come along and lift the door into place. All the cars were positioned nose down, and since they were shipped with all of their required fluids, certain aspects had to be designed specifically for this type of shipping, including an oil baffle in the engine, a special battery and even a repositioned windshield washer reservoir. Autoline Detroit recently played host to Bob Lutz, and, as is always the case, the former General Motors vice chairman dished out some great commentary. Lutz was promoting his new book Car Guys vs. Bean Counters: The Battle for the Soul of American Business, and talk quickly turned to his role as it related to product development and high-level decision making at GM. While on the topic of brand management, Lutz revealed a few rather interesting tidbits about his former employer:

Feds open investigation into Chevy Express, Ford Freestar rust issues
Wed, 28 Dec 2011'Tis the season... for road salt. And with that, comes rust. And what does rust bring? Well, for Ford and General Motors, a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation. According to The Detroit News, NHTSA is looking into potential recalls issues with Chevrolet Express vans and Ford Freestar minivans.
The feds have received five complaints that rust has caused leaking fuel filler pipes on 2003 Express vans. Separately, seven complaints have been filed over excessive rust in the rear wheel wells of 2004 Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey minivans. The Freestar and Monterey went out of production in 2007. Neither issue has resulted in any crashes or injuries, according to the report.
