The Last Great Cadillac...

I bought this gorgeous '96 Fleetwood in 2005 and would keep it forever if my wife would let me. But the family comes first, so it's time to get rid of "the other woman".

This sweet lady has been my light daily driver to the office and back. Engine is solid, A/C blows ice cold, tires have meat... I would hop in this car and drive across country tomorrow without thinking twice.

She's led a privileged life, built in Texas and shipped to Florida... never seen a salt road in her life. Two owners before me both kept her tucked in the garage and her read fairy tales before bed every night.

I didn't have a garage when I bought her, but I've kept the car clean and protected best I could. Only blemishes are a crack in the dashboard (hidden under cloth cover and some fixable exterior trim issues)

Here's a list of everything that's with her...

- Runs excellent (glides down the highway and that 5.7 liter V8 jumps to life when you stab the gas pedal)

- Superior comfort (like driving to work in a leather recliner)

- Huge interior (Roomy enough for 5 long-legged adults to sit comfortably in style)

- Clean paint and leather (no chips and zero rust, the paint still shines like new. Vinyl roof cover sparkles white with a squirt of X-14, chrome sparkles)

- Ice cold air (I replaced the compressor a couple of months ago and even the Florida summer is no match for the Arctic blast blasting through her vents)

- Good tires (they both have plenty of tread, but the thickness of the whitewalls are mismatched because I couldn't find Broadway whitewalls to replace the fronts)

- Tinted glass (about 60%)

- Superior sound system with CD and cassette, (so you can rock those mix tapes you knew you were hanging onto for some reason)

- Turn signal indicators on hood (that's just cool! and they still light up with every "tick, tick, tick.")

- Mechanically maintained with love (this is my daily driver for 8 years so she's had no mechanical downtime. If it breaks I bring it to my Cadi-loving mechanic and get it repaired right. They'll have a list of repairs done over the years.)

Over the years I've let some little stuff slip. Here's the list of what's "wrong" with her...

- Back windows slipped off the track so I don't use them. Which is fine (both fronts operate fine) but recently the back window on the driver's side slips down when you drive.

- Trim around vinyl popped off in the car wash, but I have the pieces in the trunk (just need the clips)

- Wreath around trunk emblem came off (I have that, too - just needs glue)

- Chrome trim is loose on one side (it won't fall off, but I wouldn't take it through a car wash before getting new clips)

- Antennae motor died (another reason to wash her by hand - the way she deserves)

- Fuse panel cover won't stay on (no idea why. Try velcro maybe?)

I think that's about it. Give her a good home and she'll treat you right.

Dodge Dart falls short of Consumer Reports Recommended, Caddy XTS and Lincoln MKS, too

Thu, 22 Nov 2012

The Dodge Dart, Cadillac XTS and Lincoln MKS all failed to earn a "Recommended" rating from Consumer Reports. When it came to the compact Dart, the organization's testers thought the vehicle offered a quiet cabin, solid-feeling chassis and nimble suspension, but the new model ultimately fell short of the coveted rating due to powertrain issues. The institute's reviewers found the base 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine to be underpowered and noted "drivability issues" when the available turbocharged 1.4-liter four was paired with the optional dual-clutch transmission (some of our editors disliked it paired with the six-speed manual). CR also dinged the latter powerplant for sounding "raspy." For what it's worth, we think the forced-induction engine offers an excellent and playful exhaust note, but that's just us.
As for the XTS, CR lauded the car for its luxurious cabin, but the vehicle's experience was dulled by its finicky CUE infotainment interface. Overall, the big Cadillac scored much higher than its cross-town rival from Lincoln. While testers found the American luxury sedan to offer a quiet ride and quality fit and finish, they felt the MKS delivered a "cramped driving position, ungainly handling, uncomposed ride, and limited visibility." Ouch. At the end of the day, both cars fell short of rivals from Japan, Germany and Korea. Check out the full press release below with more details, along with CR's musings on the Chevrolet Spark and Lexus ES.

Online Find Of The Day: 2008 Cadillac XLR picks up where Excalibur left off

Thu, 23 May 2013

We try very, very hard to keep snark away from creations like the one you see here. After all, someone poured plenty of enthusiasm, time and money into turning a 2008 Cadillac XLR into a modern interpretation of the new-old cars typically done by cottage builders like Excalibur and Clénet. Even so, it's hard not to wince when you set an eye on this machine. With its wheelbase stretched to accommodate the extra bodywork, goofy sidewalls and upkicked nose (examine it in profile, it looks slightly bent in the middle), this "neoclassic" takes whatever was loveable about the Cadillac underneath and buries it in a tacky grave.
Miraculously, the engine bay has been left unmolested, which means the retractable hardtop convertible still features a 4.6-liter Northstar V8 engine good for 320 horsepower. If only that were enough to outrun its shame. If, for some reason, you feel like taking this thing home, Harry Kaufmann Motorcars of Milwaukee says it can be yours for a paltry $74,998. We wish were joking. Check it out here.

Cadillac considering more engines, Vsport model for Escalade

Tue, 15 Jul 2014

Want to roll in the latest Cadillac Escalade? You can get it with a 6.2-liter V8... or a 6.2-liter V8. Cadillac only offers the one engine option. But that may soon change.
According to the latest from Automotive News, Cadillac is contemplating a couple of new powertrain options for its blingin' big ute. The report suggests a twin-turbo V6 and a V6 turbodiesel could be offered, and that Cadillac could create a Vsport version of the Escalade like it offers on the new CTS sedan.
The more diverse engine offerings would help attract buyers from the new Lincoln Navigator, its prime competitor, which switched from a 5.4-liter V8 this year to a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6. The turbo V6 engines (both gasoline and diesel) would also help Cadillac market the Escalade overseas - particularly in Europe, where higher fuel prices preclude the prospect of driving a big V8 SUV for many buyers. Escalade sales have dropped from 35-40k units in the mid-2000s to around 12,000 the past couple of years.
