Feature Article from Hemmings
Motor News - May, 2010 - by Matthew Litwin “The redesigned version first appeared in 1979 after engineers had shaved 20 inches of length from the body and over a foot from the wheelbase (down to 114 inches). Altogether, 1,150 pounds of material was dropped overnight. …the Eldorado still carried over some of its signature traits on the new 204.5-inch body, such as the long-hood, short-deck profile and egg-crate grille. Decorative trim was rather minimal; however, the top-of-the-line Biarritz models--such as our feature car--were dressed with a cabriolet roof featuring a brushed stainless roof section. Cast aluminum wheels completed the look of opulence. …horsepower was sent through a column-shifted Turbo Hydra-Matic three-speed automatic, followed by a final drive ratio of 2.19:1; being a front-wheel-drive platform, there was no "conventional" driveshaft. …Cadillac utilized an independent
type front suspension consisting of transverse torsion bars, tubular shocks and
an anti-roll bar. But rather than assemble the car with a traditional rear
suspension, engineers instead installed an independent setup with components
that consisted of trailing arms, coil springs, tubular shocks and an anti-roll
bar. This configuration effectively made the Eldorado--and its corporate
siblings, Buick Riviera and Oldsmobile Toronado--the first American-made
four-wheel independent suspension front-drive vehicle. An additional part of
the suspension was a new automatic load-leveling system. Through the use of a
small sensor on the rear crossmember, the air pressure in the rear shocks could
be inflated automatically to bring the rear end up to proper ride height. Each
Eldorado was also equipped with four-wheel power disc brakes.” Cadillac assembled an “undetermined number of Biarritz editions (the company did not break out Biarritz figures in 1979” – and this version, with the stainless steel roof, is considered a rarity. From: http://www.hagerty.com/price-guide/1979-Cadillac-Eldorado The 1979 Eldorado was available only as a two-door coupe, though the Biarritz package added a stainless steel roof over the front occupants. All Cadillac Eldorados of this generation had well-equipped interiors, with plush leather seats, climate control, and more. The long hood / short deck proportions are quite different from the more iconic Eldorados…but the look has actually aged quite well, and these cars are beginning to see a level of interest they haven’t seen since they were new cars." VIN Format: 1972-1980 GM (VIN#: 6L57B9E611414) Digit Usage VIN Decoded About this car: Carport covered most of its life, this bronze beauty is a clean 1979 Cadillac (Eldorado) Biarritz. This second-owner-car has most of the options on it which were available in 1979. Engine is clean and well kept with regular maintenance and oil changes, however there is some smoke on startup. Shifts, drives and rides smooth, in the traditional Cadillac fashion. The rear air suspension works well, as do all the other power options in this car – with the exception of the radio antenna, which is in the extended position. The car passed a recent safety inspection for Texas, (due again in April, 2015). Interior is in great shape - no major rips, tears or stains. (However, two small tears are visible on driver's seat on the side of the lower seat.) Power leather seats adjust to drivers of all heights and weights. All outside bright work is clean and shiny when polished. Maintenance records included. |

2014 Cadillac CTS
Tue, 24 Sep 2013Fixated By Europeans, GM Ensures The Third Time Is A Charm
Few things are better for consumers than competition raising the bar. And no campaign seems fiercer than the one currently underway in the midsize sport-sedan segment now that Cadillac has introduced its all-new 2014 CTS to go head-to-head against the benchmark Audi A6, BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
While the CTS has been on the market for slightly more than a decade, up until this third-generation, Cadillac hasn't truly had the proper high-performance rear-wheel-drive architecture to build a genuine world-class fighter, both inside and out. And now that the American automaker has successfully mirrored Audi, BMW and Mercedes in overall vehicle size, engine output and cabin appointments, the first shots have been fired.
GM recalling 524k vehicles over hood latches and toe link nuts
Fri, 03 Oct 2014Just hours after confirming to Autoblog its intention to recall 97,540 vehicles in the US (117,651 in North America) for a possible manufacturing defect in the chassis control module of several models, General Motors is issuing two more campaigns that affect another 379,401 units in the US (524,384 in North America).
One campaign covers 290,107 US examples of the 2010-2015 Cadillac SRX and the 2011-2012 Saab 9-4X because the "rear toe link adjuster lock nuts" may be improperly torqued. If not up to spec, the toe adjuster link could separate and allow the wheel to shift while driving, making the handling unstable. GM says that it knows of three crashes and two injuries as a result of this problem. Dealers are inspecting the nuts and installing a new link assembly, if necessary. Autoblog first reported about this potential issue when it showed up on a list of recalls from Transport Canada.
The second recall is for 89,294 examples of the 2013-2015 Chevrolet Spark in the US manufactured from January 17, 2012, through July 29, 2014. According to GM, "corrosion can cause the secondary hood latch striker to stick in the open position." If this happens, and the primary latch also isn't engaged for some reason, the hood could fly open while driving. About 13,000 of these affected Sparks are at dealers and are being held until repaired. The fix requires replacing the hood striker. GM isn't aware of crashes, injuries or fatalities caused by this problem.
Cadillac moving to NY as separate business unit
Tue, 23 Sep 2014Cadillac is under new leadership, and the automaker is committed to turning itself (back) into a global luxury powerhouse. It's got a strong product offensive (of products currently in showrooms, and much more on the way), and now it will have a new location to call home.
Following earlier speculation, GM has confirmed that it is moving Cadillac's base of operations from Detroit to New York. Lest you think it might rent offices in the Chrysler Building (which is, after all, one of the tallest in the city), the new Cadillac global headquarters will be located in the Soho area with a "multipurpose brand and event space in conjunction with modern loft offices." The company is still evaluating which staff will move along with it to Manhattan, and which will remain in Michigan where technical operations will still be based.
The move from Detroit to New York is the first major change being instituted by new Cadillac chief Johan de Nysschen, who previously undertook a similar shift in moving Infiniti away from Nissan headquarters to its own facility in Hong Kong. Ford had attempted a similar move in relocating its luxury portfolio under the Premier Automotive Group (which then included Lincoln, Mercury, Land Rover, Jaguar, Aston Martin and Volvo) from Dearborn to Irvine, CA, but ended up moving Lincoln (the last one still under the Ford umbrella) back to Michigan. Other luxury automakers like Audi (Volkswagen) and Maserati (Fiat) are headquartered away from their parent companies as well, but have a longer history of independent operation.
