The weapons-grade M5 sports a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 with 600 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque, making the M5
mighty quick. Some say the fastest four door sedan on the market. It launches to 60 mph in 2.8 seconds and snaps
off a 10.9-second quarter-mile time at 129 mph. This BMW has a high-tech drivetrain that can send 100 percent of
power to the rear wheels for pure rear-drive personality. Driving enjoyment is maximized here with lively and
direct steering, a well-controlled (borderline stiff) ride, and heroic cornering grip. That doesn't mean the M5
can't also do duty as a luxury sedan: In Comfort mode it cruises placidly and the cabin is whisper quiet.
Along with its unique exterior appearance and enhanced performance, the M5 has a unique leather interior with
supple and supportive sport seats. The driving position is optimized for performance-style driving, and BMW hasn't
gone the all-touchscreen route that many of its rivals have, so making changes to the air conditioning or adjusting
the radio during driving causes little distraction. The large infotainment display runs BMW's latest iDrive
software, sits atop the dash to the right of the driver's sightlines, and is controlled by a rotary knob on the
center console. BMW offers driver-assistance features such as lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control,
blind-spot monitoring, and automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection as standard equipment. I have all

BMW working with Dainese to put airbags in motorcycle suits [w/video]
Fri, 19 Jul 2013Addressing the safety concerns of its customers, BMW Motorrad is co-developing a rider suit with Dainese to feature something that's much more common in automobiles: airbags.
Starting with Dainese's D-air Protect System, which is made up of inflatable protectors that deploy in 15 milliseconds, the two companies will integrate the technology into a BMW Motorrad brand, one-piece racing suit, the DoubleR RaceAir. Later a different, street-oriented airbag system that can be retrofitted to bikes will be offered to Beemer riders.
The DoubleR RaceAir is expected to be presented at the EICMA motorcycle show in Milan in November, after all required crash testing has been completed.
Alpina B3 Bi-Turbo offers Europeans a pre-M3 performance 3er
Tue, 05 Mar 2013Anyone that's spent some time behind the wheel of the Alpina B7 probably knows enough to understand what Americans are missing with this, newly launched Alpina B3 Bi-Turbo. We've got no lack of M models to choose from, it's true, but the Alpina touch offers a completely different driving character, with almost as much performance. A pity then that Alpina has no plans that we've heard of to bring this one across the pond.
Filling the gap between the current 3 Series offerings and the outgoing M3 (we're not likely to even see the new M3 and M4 until September's Frankfurt show, nor be able to buy one until after that), the B3 Bi-Turbo brings serious performance to the F30 3er. As the name indicates, two turbochargers are used to force-feed BMW's 3.0-liter inline-six engine, for a total output of 410 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque. That power offers a big jump from even the BMW 335i sedan, and will push the B3 to 62 miles per hour in just 4.2 seconds and on to a top speed of 190 miles per hour. Alpina's own sport suspension underpins the thing, while the power is modulated by way of a eight-speed automatic transmission.
The new B3 will be easily recognizable thanks to its "Classic" 20-inch, 20-spoke Alpina wheels, and a rather subtle, aero-enhancing body kit. No pricing has yet been announced, but you will find a host of additional information in the attached Alpina press release below.
134K BMW 5 Series recalled for taillight issue
Fri, 20 Sep 2013BMW is voluntarily recalling 134,100 cars due to a faulty ground terminal in the taillight bulb carriers, causing the sudden failure of brake lights, turn signals and reverse lights. The recall covers 2008 through 2010 5 Series models produced between March 1, 2007 and December 31, 2009, and includes everything from the 528i to the mighty, V10-powered M5. It's unclear if this recall is limited to sedans or extends to the 5-Series Touring.
There have been no reported cases of injuries, fatalities or crashes associated with the taillight issue. BMW will be issuing recall notices to affected owners in the coming weeks, asking them to report to dealers so that the bulb carriers on the taillights can be replaced.
