Up for sale is my 1988 BMW M5. I bought the car late 2011 from it's original owner in Alameda, California and had it shipped to Baltimore. The car is all original with the exception of the suspension which has been replaced with a Dinan Stage 1 kit and the wheels which are E34 M5 without the covers.
1)220# 2)220# 3)220# 4)230# 5)225# 6)230#
Chain and guides are original. Absolutely no slap or rattle at start up. If the next owner has money to burn, go ahead.
Personally, I would wait until the vehicle showed symptoms before i would replace them.
SLS as well as front springs and shocks replaced 3/18/03 with Dinan Stage 1 at a cost of $1,938. Mileage was 102,786.
Driver's seat hip bolster is bent towards the driver's door. Most are. Shoulder bolster shows average wear. Carpet is as perfect as 23 year old carpet can be. No stains, tears, or wear spots. This summer I removed the seats and used a hot water extractor to clean the carpets. Back seat looks like it was never used. Passenger front has no significant wear.
Original wheels and spare. Wheels have been professionally refinished by Wheels America on 11/5/02 at a cost of $444.92
Dash has several cracks all centered around the top air vent. Again, what E28 doesn't.
The amazing documentation includes EVERY SINGLE REPAIR RECORD.
In addition to window sticker, delivery checklist, original invoice, all keys, anti theft radio card, "The Ultimate Driving Machine" front plastic tag, etc. Original sales brochure for the E28 M5 as well the E30 M3. I guess the PO considered both.
As far as front end parts. Upper and lower control arms, inner and outer tie rods, center link, idler arm. Upper control arms were torqued on the alignment rack when the vehicle had weight on them. They have the 750 bushings. Lower control arms are aluminum. I also replaced rear dogbones but not rear subframe bushings. Those bushings come with the car. I didn't replace them as I couldn't justify the expense.
Tool kit is complete down to the unused blue rag.
Paint is getting thin as there are spots were the M strips have been rubbed through.
Valve cover "seeps". Top of the engine IS NOT wet. Oil pan is wet and it's gasket could stand to be replaced. Car DOES NOT mark it's territory.
Radiator is original to the car. Water pump was replaced at 66,676 on 06/04/97 at a cost of $479.07
Fuel lines are original.
Car last passed smog on 1/20/11 @ 114,014 at a cost of $110.75. Work was done by Speedy Smog in Alameda, CA.
Cats are original.
A/C is still R12 and works great.
Clutch was replaced on 11/22/02 @ 100,708 at a cost of $1,585.18. Transmission fluid was replaced and shifter was rebuilt at this time.
Front rotors done 5/25/04 @ 104,619 at a cost of $387.39
Suspension is tight but I think the car could use some extra camber for better turn in and stability. If I keep it I will install "crash mounts". Rear differential mount is about due.
Stereo is original. Tape deck does not work and radio "crackles" when you change the volume. I don't use it much as the S38 is enough music for me.
Recommendations that Bavarian Professionals made were that the pedal box is cracked. It feels fine to me and shifts great.
Also says that there is a little play in the water pump bearing. It is very little play but I bought a new water pump any way. It comes with the car.
Any and all questions will be answered.
Thanks for looking and check out my other auctions!
On Mar-05-13 at 20:52:00 PST, seller added the following information:
Car currently has a custom "track" pipe installed but comes with stock center section. I will also include brand new "euro" headers and a new VSR high flow center section with cats.

BMW M235i in circuit scrap with legendary E46 M3 CSL
Fri, 25 Apr 2014Earlier this month, we brought you news that BMW's one-year wonder, the 2011 1 Series M Coupe, is actually trading for more money today than it did when new. That sort of short-term appreciation is a major rarity with modern production cars, but apparently it's not the only BMW enthusiast coupe to enjoy far-above-average residual values. The not-for-North America 2004 M3 CSL, itself a single-year offering, apparently also fits that description, as we've just learned from Auto Express.
The M3 CSL ruled overseas BMW showrooms a decade ago, with just 1,400 examples built. Based on the well-regarded E46 M3, the rare two-door was relieved of extraneous bits for improved track work and driver fidelity, coming in at around 240 fewer pounds than a garden-variety M3. With carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic bodywork, thinner glass and a lot less sound insulation, the CSL was one of the more raucous cars of its day. Like the 1M Coupe, it was also one of the more connected cars of the era, with a retuned suspension, quicker steering, and a bit more power than its brethren.
As Auto Express points out, a good used one commands about the same money as a brand-new 2014 M235i - the closest thing BMW makes to a 1M Coupe today - which makes this video track battle an interesting new-versus-used showdown. According to AE, a well-sorted used M3 CSL will run UK consumers anywhere between £30,000 and £35,000 - roughly $50,000 to $59,000 US. That's a massive premium over the $10k-17k British buyers can expect to shell out for a comparable standard M3, similar to the story that plays out for the 1M versus lesser 1 Series variants.
BMW pondering hardcore M4 to celebrate 100 years?
Thu, 03 Oct 20132013 is the year for Lamborghini, Aston Martin and the Porsche 911, but 2016 will be the year for BMW. That's when the Munich-based maker of the Ultimate Driving Machine will celebrate its 100th birthday, with what will probably be a year-long celebration. Part of that 365-day party will, reportedly, be an even hotter version of the new BMW M4, which is set to debut in January at the Detroit Auto Show.
Yes, according to Australia's Car Sales, the über-M4 has been hinted at by higher-ups at BMW's M division, who claim the rear seats will be removed, much like the M3 GTS, while other weight-saving measures will be used to try and bring the M4's weight below 3,000 pounds. There's no mention of engine mods, but if the M4's biturbocharged six is as good as we think it'll be, that's not a deal-breaker for us.
The lightening process on the so-called M4 GTS would involve replacing the hood and front fenders with parts made of carbon fiber, while the doors would switch from steel to aluminum. Besides the deletion of the rear seats, Car Sales is predicting lightweight racing buckets, with a carbon-fiber shell and a minimal amount of padding. Expect lots and lots of Alcantara, in place of leather.
BMW i3 starts near $35,000; NA first deliveries January 2014
Mon, 08 Jul 2013While in Germany at the first early pre-production drives of the hotly anticipated BMW i3, BMW people finally hinted at a price ballpark. Numbers being tossed around by pundits have actually been pretty close to what BMW is discussing internally - between $35,000 and just over $40,000. We have been assured now that the base price, should one choose to buy and not lease in the Euro zone, is just over 35,000 euro, with some big taxes included in that price. In the US, the starting price for the fully EV plug-in version should be $34,500 or right thereabouts. In addition to new pricing, we've also gotten our best-yet look at the i3, with the freshly uncovered spy shots you see here.
European deliveries begin in November of this year for the fully electric version of the rear-wheel-drive i3 with 168-horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The e-motor mounted over the rear axle is supplied with energy by the 22-kWh lithium-ion battery pallet under the passenger compartment. Recharging happens in any of three ways: public or personal garage plug-in charge station (garage version not included in the price), the onboard system's Pro Eco mode that adds resistance to the drivetrain in a type of rolling brake energy recuperation, or through the normal brake energy and off-throttle coasting regeneration more common to EVs. Range on a full charge of this drivetrain is said to be upwards of 100 miles under hyper-miling conditions.
Perhaps the best bit of news is that the alternative, range-extending, two-cylinder 600cc engine supplied by BMW Motorrad for the hybrid version of the i3 - mounted in the rear together with the e-motor - will add only 2,000 euros in Europe and about $2,000 in the US. This is a range-doubling solution that could have brought a much higher price gouge, so thank you, BMW. The hybrid e-drive i3 version arrives a couple months after the full-EV launch version. Remember that, unlike the very similar system for the Chevrolet Volt, the system in the i3 supplies no mechanical torque to the driven axle and is only used as a generator (a system BMW first used last year in the 1 Series-based Active ). The US is seen as the clear number one market for the i3.
