You are bidding on a driver quality restored black on black 1972 BMW 2002.  I purchased this car in May of 2012 in Hillsboro OR and have spent the last two years having it professionally restored.

I am the third owner of this car.  The original owner handed it down to his nephew and I purchased it from that nephew.  The car had been stored in the family barn since the late 90’s before I purchased it.  So I guess technically it’s a barn find.  Since the car had been in storage for the past 12+ years the body was in really great shape with no rust in any of the usual 2002 problem areas, shock towers, floor pans, spare tire well, running boards etc.  All are really solid.  I’ve included some before and after pictures of some of the common problem areas before they were cleaned and re coated with fresh undercoating to keep them protected.

The cars original color was malanga but it was repainted to (schwartz) black back sometime in the 80’s.  During the 2 year restoration I had the car taken down to bare metal and re painted this same black.  The interior of the car has been reupholstered in black vinyl including front/rear seats and door panels front/rear.  The door panels were replaced with Aardvark racing wooden panels before they were reupholstered.  As far as I can tell the carpet is original.  If so it’s in incredible shape.

Beyond the restoration the following upgrades have been performed:  BMW OEM BBS wheels, BMW OEM Sport Recaro seats, New Weber 32/26 carburetor, flush European turn signals and Hella driving lights.

Here is a high level overview of the work performed during the restoration, detailed work below.

Bare metal repaint in Fall 2013
Complete engine rebuild Spring 2013
Complete interior reupholster Fall 2013
Brake system rebuild Spring 2013
Suspension rebuild Spring 2013
Blower rebuild Spring 2014

All receipts for this work will go with the car.

The car runs well and the engine pulls strong.  It handles well and stops just as well.  After all the mechanical work I would expect nothing less.  Paint is a 9/10, interior 9/10, mechanical 9/10, chrome 8/10 (some of the chrome, drip rail, window trim has a few scratches), engine bay 7/10 (mechanically sound just could use detailing).

The engine has approximately 1000 miles on the rebuild.  The engine rebuild included the following:

New pistons
New head
New valves
New springs
New spark plugs
New spark plug wires
New belts
New Engine mounts
New weber 32/26 carburetor
New heat shield
All gaskets replaced

While the engine was out the following was done:

New transmission mounts
Service the transmission
Service the rear diff
Rebuilt the alternator
New water pump
New 320i radiator and hoses
New thermostat

The brakes were professionally rebuilt including:

New brake hoses at all four corners
Replaced brake master cylinder
Replaced rear wheel cylinders
New brake light switch

The front suspension was professionally rebuilt including:

New front control arms.
New front subframe bushings
New front strut mounts
New tie rods
New strut inserts
New Bilstein shocks
The original Bilsteins in the rear were in good shape and thus not replaced

The previous owner had performed the following work before I purchased the car:

New steering guibo
New clutch
New header back exhaust
New battery
New header back exhaust

The body includes the following:

New Ireland Engineering front spoiler
European flush mount front turn signals
New Hella 5 inch driving lights
New front windshield and seal
New rear windshield seal using original windshield
New trunk seal
New trunk lock
New beltline chrome trim
New emblems front and rear
New tires

In addition to everything listed above the following has been replaced.

New hazard switch
New blinker relay
New dash cover

Clean Title in hand.

Enjoy this car as a daily driver or keep it for the weekends and car shows.

Buyer to pay for shipping from Portland OR or local pickup.  I do require a 500$ deposit within 72 hours of close of auction.

BMW planning to stretch i3 into i5 family hauler?

Sat, 30 Nov 2013

If you're sweet on the new BMW i3 but wish it had more space to carry people and stuff, we've got good news for you. According to Autocar, BMW is planning on stretching the platform that underpins the i3 to create a new model, expected to be called i5.
The stretch job would add an extra four inches of legroom in the back and another six inches of rear overhang to the benefit of cargo space. The result would create a vehicle longer than the current Mini Countryman - although the next Countryman is likely to be even larger. As Autocar points out, the process of extending the i3's composte passenger cell likely wouldn't be as difficult or cost-intensive as lengthening a conventional metal chassis, although the rear doors would need to be re-engineered.
Whether the resulting vehicle would more closely resemble a hatchback, wagon, minivan or something in between remains to be seen, however BMW is said to have already registered the nameplates i1 through i8, signalling that the possibility is at least there to add more members to its new EV family.

2015 BMW M3 squares off against Alpina D3 in gas vs. diesel throwdown

Sat, 26 Jul 2014

There was a time when diesel meant one of two things: This vehicle's owner either wants to save some money at the pump or needs to haul massive loads. It definitely did not mean that the owner of said machine wanted to drive fast, but that perception has slowly but surely been changing over the last several years, with automakers from Volkswagen and Ford to Audi and BMW offering spiced-up versions of their high-compression, turbocharged diesels.
It's that last automaker we mentioned that's the subject of the video you'll see down below. One bright-blue BMW M3 was procured by the Brits at Autocar, and it was lined up against a deep-black Alpina D3 (which we sadly can't buy in the US) in a spate of tests, including acceleration, stopping, sound and lap times on a closed circuit. The results, which we won't spoil for you, were enlightening, and were followed up by personal impressions from the man behind the wheel.
We know you're curious. All it takes to find out which of these 3.0-liter, twin-turbo-powered 3 Series variants came out on top is to scroll down below and watch. You know what to do.

BMW invests in carbon fiber for use beyond i and M models

Tue, 13 May 2014

The immense amount of resources BMW has poured into its i brand program hasn't stopped, and recent developments indicate it's likely to pay off for BMW and BMW buyers outside the i brand. The i8 has already sold out its first year run, the i3 racked up 10,000 orders before it even went on sale and is already the subject of public discussion about being stretched into an i5, and a new investment in carbon fiber production has the automaker talking about CFRP use in non-i and non-M models.
BMW and SGL Group got together to form SGL Automotive Carbon Fibers (ACF), and the joint venture produces all of the CFRP for the i3 and i8 on two production lines at its plant in Moses Lake, Washington. After already investing $100 million to increase capacity, BMW has announced that another $200 million will add four more production lines, tripling production from 3,000 tons per year to 9,000 tons. When the expansion is complete in 2015, BMW says the Moses Lake facility will be the world's largest carbon fiber plant.
That's a lot of weave and the long view is that it will find its way into core models, with BMW exec Dr. Klaus Draeger saying, "As part of an intelligent mix of materials, we will apply carbon also beyond our BMW i and BMW M models in the future," and be able to do so "at competitive costs and in large quantities."
