My summer toy is up for sale - 1989 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce. Very fun to drive, gets ton of "thumbs ups" everywhere you go! I purchased this car a little over three years ago from its longtime owner in southern California and drove all the way home to Minnesota. Since then, it has been properly stored every winter, and properly enjoyed every summer. All maintenance faithfully performed and has never needed any mechanical repairs since being in my possession. Interior in very nice shape with tan leather seats and black carpet that are both like brand new. Door cards in great shape. Some minor warping is present in the soft dash and console parts. Body is straight and clean with no visible rust. Underbody is also in very nice shape, as it has likely never seen any salt or snow. New tires with only a few thousand miles on them. Handles nicely with no annoying vibrations. Tracks straight and true. Remarkably free from annoying squeaks and rattles while driving. Top is in great shape, thought the back window could use replacement. This is the "veloce" model, so it is pretty well equipped with (working) power windows and (currently non-working) keyless entry, air conditioning (in need of a recharge), CD player, 5-speed manual transmission, and the aforementioned beautiful leather seats. Mechanically, this car has always gotten me around with no hassle, and even drove in the famous Grand Old Day parade in Saint Paul last year. The 2.0 liter Alfa engine still pulls well, though it does leak a very slight amount of oil by the spark plugs. Runs well after it has been warmed up, does stumble a bit for first few minutes of operation. Fuel injected, so it tarts easily and reliably. 5-speed transmission shifts smoothly and the cutch works well. Brakes are strong, but will pull to the right on hard braking, I'm guessing that it may have some air in the line that should be bled out. Consistently gets around 30 MPG and is perfectly happy cruising at 70 MPH on the freeway. Does have it's share of quirks, as are to be expected in a 25 year old Italian car. As previously mentioned, the keyless remote is no longer working, nor is the AC. The speedometer does not function, and the tach is not accurate, though the odometer is. The interior gauge and switch lights work intermittently. All in all, while this is not a show car, it is a very reliable, fun, functional summer toy and is in rare condition here in the midwest. Porsche 911 Turbo and Nissan GT-R Nismo star in World's Greatest Drag Race 4
Fri, 26 Sep 2014We love Motor Trend's annual World's Greatest Drag Race video. Now back for its fourth appearance, the idea of lining some of the world's fastest cars up for a ten-wide, straight-line, full-throttle run is, well... it's pretty freaking badass.
The lineup this year boasts some impressively fast cars to be sure. The group of ten includes the following darlings: Alfa Romeo 4C, BMW i8, BMW M4, Chevrolet Camaro Z/28, Ford Fiesta ST, Jaguar F-Type R Coupe, Nissan GT-R Nismo, Porsche 911 Turbo S, Subaru WRX STI and, last but not least, the Volkswagen GTI. Give us any one of those for the weekend, and we're happy to take the keys.
It must be said though, that for a publication that draws as much water as Motor Trend does, there are some big cars that we might expect to be here instead. The Lamborghini Huracán or Ferrari 458 Speciale would have added some exotic flare to the list, and the omissions of the Chevy Corvette Stingray (for the second year in a row) and the Dodge Challenger Hellcat are real head-scratchers.
Audi rumored to buy Alfa Romeo, officials deny it
Thu, 28 Mar 2013For more than two years, Volkswagen has been making public statements about its willingness to buy Alfa Romeo and quadruple the Italian brand's sales, and for just as long, Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne has replied with some version of "Mr. Piëch, drop it." According to a report in Ward's Auto, all that jousting might be over: it claims that sources close to both Marchionne and Audi CEO Rupert Stadler admit that the two are in talks for Audi to buy not just Alfa Romeo, but a production plant in Italy. In fact, a final deal could possibly include partsmaker Magnetti Marelli.
Against that backdrop, a report by German news weekly Stern quotes a Fiat spokesmen as saying it doesn't comment on rumors and an Audi rep has said flatly that "There is no substance in the news." If a sale is being arranged, the timing would seem to point to how eager Fiat is to raise cash to complete its major initiatives. Even though Alfa Romeo continues to delay its return to the US, it just showed off the production version of the 4C at the Geneva Motor Show (shown above) and said that preferred Fiat dealerships here would get them. Then there's Alfa's recently concluded deal with Mazda to develop a roadster based on the next generation MX-5 Miata - a deal that would seem to help both the Italian and Japanese brands.
The monetary issues are troublesome, though. Fiat is taking a beating in the European market and its weak-kneed balance sheet is delaying gotta-have-it products like the Jeep Cherokee. Fiat has been talking to banks about getting money to buy the rest of Chrysler and those financial institutions have also raised issues about debt and cash reserves, and the nasty game of chess Fiat is playing with the United Auto Workers (and now the court system about the portion of Chrysler it doesn't own) could end up blowing another hole in Marchionne's plans. It is possible that this could finally have convinced Fiat to at least see how serious Audi's parent company, Volkswagen, is about buying Alfa Romeo. Or it could be just another rumor.
Mazda and Fiat finalize deal for Alfa roadster, next-gen MX-5 Miata
Fri, 18 Jan 2013Although a little bit later than expected, Mazda and Fiat have signed a final agreement that will bring a next-generation MX-5 Miata to the Japanese automaker and a new roadster to Alfa Romeo. When the proposed arrangement was announced back in May, the two automakers had hoped to seal the deal last year, but it doesn't appear that the production timeline for these cars has slipped any, with both expected to start rolling off assembly lines in 2015.
Other than a shared chassis with a rear-wheel-drive layout, it sounds like the two cars are still planned to be distinct in their own ways from their styling right down to their engines. Mazda will produce both cars at a plant in Hiroshima, Japan, but it isn't clear what role each automaker will play in the cars' developmental process. The big question, of course, is what clever portmanteau name we can come up with, like Toyobaru. Mazda Romeo is the easy choice, but Alfazda might roll off the tongue a little better.
